Abstract

The holding device has a main body 1 of square section aluminium with an integral handle 2 at one end and cranked fixed clamp 3 at the other end. Pivoted on the main body is a moveable claw 4 of plastics, which is operated by a pull rod 7 and handle 8, to provide a clamping action against the fixed part of the clamp thus allowing the operator to pick up remote objects. <IMAGE>

Description

A MANUAL GRASPING AND HOLDING DEV# This invention relates to a simple, light, rigid hand operated device for grasping, holding and moving remote objects.
The original device was designed to provide a person of limited physical movement and strength with a means to reach, pick up, and move, a range of common objects with one hand.
Investigation of the equipment available on the market for such purposes revealed the lack of a simple light device of this kind.
According to the present invention the device comprises simply a square section aluminium body, bent at right angles at the top to form an integral handle and cranked at the bottom to form the fixed part a clamp.
The moving part of the clamp, (hereinafter termed "the claw"), is an irregular shaped piece of plastic, pivoted on the main body by means of a screw and washers, clamping against the cranked portion of the body at one end, and moved from its other end by means of a lever and pull rod.
The lever and pull rod are formed from a single steel rod being bent at 900 at one end to form an integral handle, and cranked at 900 at the other end to form the moving pivot of the claw. The pull rod movement is constrained to the body plane by means of three equally spaced guides screwed to the main body.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by reference to the accompanying drawing FIG.1 showing perspective the complete device.
Referring to the drawing, the device comprises a solid aluminium square section body 1 bent over at the top end and having a handle 2 affixed. The body is cranked over at its lower end to form the fixed part of the clamp 3.
A shaped plastic claw 4 is pivoted on the main body by means of a pin and washers 5 to form the moving part of the clamp. Both faces of the clamp have a thin layer of soft material bonded to them 6 to provide a good gripping surface.
The moving part of the clamp (shown in the closed position) is drawn closed by a steel pull rod 7 being pulled upwards by the handle 8, through guides 9, and the end cranked over and loosely pinned through the end of the plastic claw 10 with washers. The clamp will fall open by virtue of the weight or pull rod 7 when the handle 8 is released.
Generally the device will be made in three standard lengths (long, medium and short) with a standard size of claw and handles. However, the overall length of the body 1 and pull rod 7 can be made to suit individual requirements. The dimensions of the moving claw can be made to suit requirements: the distance between the fixed pivot 5 and the moving pivot 10 being set to suit the clamping pressure required; the length of guides 9 being made to suit.
Both handles 2 and 8 can be developed in shape, dimension and material to suit any shape or size of hand, or to compensate for limited hand movement or strength.

Claims (7)

1. A simple clamping device comprisinng a body and moveable pivoted claw operated by an integral lever and pull rod, thus enabling the user to grasp, hold and move in any direction a miscellany of objects of various shapes and sizes with one hand.
2. The body and lever of the device described in claim (1) may be manufactured in various lengths to suit the requirement of the user.
3. The claw described in claim (1) may be manufactured in differing dimensions or materials to cater for varying user requirements.
4. The handle of the body of the device described in claim (1) may be altered in dimension, shape or material to suit user requirements.
5. The handle of the lever described in claim (1) can be altered in dimension shape or plane to suit user requirements.
6. The dimensions of the main body, lever assembly, claw assembly, and handles may be varied severally or individually to suit other applications.
7. A light spring may be incorporated between the lower cranked arm of the pull rod and the lowewr guide to ensure automatic opening of the clamp.
