Description
FOG LAMP
This invention relates to a fog lamp for road vehicles.
Common problems with known fog lamps are that they tend to give the user glare and/or tend to dazzle an oncoming driver. I have now devised a fog lam; which overcomes these problems.
In accordance with this invention, there is provided a fog lamp lens comprising a plurality of non-reflective strips extending horizontally and spaced apart vertically and embedded in the rear surface of the lens.
Preferably the strips project from the rear surf'ace of the lens and preferably are disposed in parallel planes perpendicular to the plane of the lens itself.
An embodiment of this invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevation'of a fog lamp lens in accordance with my invention;
FIGURE 2 is a side elevation of the fog lamp lens;
FIGURE 3 is a horizontal cross-section through an assembled fog lamp incorporating the lens; and
FIGURE 4 is a vertical cross-section through the assembled lamp.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, there is shown the lens or glass for a fog lamp, comprising a lens 10 of glass or other optical material, having a plurality of horizontally extending, vertically-spaced strips 12 of non-reflective material embedded in its rear surface. In the example shown, the lens 10 is 6 inches high and 8 inches wide and k inch thick. The thin strips 12 are formed of non-reflective steel or other opaque material, 8.1/8 inch long, 5/8 inch wide and .012 inch thick and are bedded into the rear of the lens 10 to a depth of 3/16 inch, leaving a thickness of 1/16 inch clear at the front surface of the lens and the strips 12 projecting by 7.16 inch from the rear of the lens 10. The strips lie in horizontal planes parallel to each other at 1/8 inch spacing.A rim 14 is applied to cover the projecting ends of the strips and the top and bottom edges of the glass.
Figures 3 and 4 show an assembled fog lamp, with screws 16 for securing the lens by its rim 14 to a housing 18. One example of a reflector 20 is shown and also a projecting bracket 22 for mounting the fog lamp to the vehicle on which it is to be used.
Because of the construction of the lens, the fog lamp will not give the user glare and will not dazzle oncoming drivers if set correctly. The horizontal beam can cover the centre and both sides quite widely but in the vertical direction, with the suggested size of 6 x 8 inches shown, it will have a depth of 25 feet at 10 yards, 50 feet at 20 yards and so on. The lamp should be tilted forwardly so that the top of the beam is horizontal or directed downwardly at a few degrees to the horizontal.
Claims (5)
1. A fog lamp lens comprising a plurality of non-reflective strips extending horizontally and spaced apart vertically and embedded in the rear surface of the lens.
2. A fog lamp lens as claimed in claim 1, in which the strips project from the rear surface of the lens.
3. A fog lamp lens as claimed in claim 1 or 2, in which the strips are disposed in parallel planes perpendicular to the plane of the lens itself.
At. A fog lamp lens substantially as herein described with references to the accompanying drawings.
5. A fog lamp which includes a fog lamp lens as claimed in any preceding claim.
