Description

"Backing sheet and self adhesive label combination" Description of Invention This invention relates to a combination of a backing sheet and a self adhesive label removably secured to a face of the backing sheet.
Such backing sheets and self adhesive labels are known in which the backing sheet has a face to which a printed label is removably secured, the face being waxed or otherwise treated, to allow the label to be removed easily when required.
The present invention provides an imprbvement over such a known combination.
According to one aspect of the present invention we provide in combination, a backing sheet and a label removably secured on a face of the backing sheet, the backing sheet being printed on the face to which the label is secured, and the face having applied thereto a generally transparent layer of protective material which prevents the adhesive of the label directly contacting the printed face.
Thus the printed face of the backing sheet can be hidden by the label until the label is removed, when the printed face will be revealed. Because of the protective layer between the adhesive of the label and the printed face, the printed face is not damaged as the label is removed.
Of course, the label itself may be printed on the opposite face thereof to that on which the adhesive is applied, and so a backing sheet and label combination in accordance with the invention has a multitude of applications.
In one example, the label and backing sheet may be printed identically so that the label may be removed and applied by means of the adhesive to a surface, such as a collector's album, whilst the backing sheet may provide Q record of what was printed on the label. Aiternatively, the label may be printed differently to the backing sheet, in which case the label, for example, may have printed thereon a question and the backing sheet an answer. Thus the combination may be a puzzle, or part of a puzzle or game.
Many other uses are possible.
The backing sheet may be printed using a conventional litho offset printing technique in black and white or colour as required, and the label, where printed, may similarly be printed with a litho offset printing technique.
The protective layer on the printed face of the backing sheet may comprise, for example, a high gloss varnish which may be of the type which is curable using ultravoilet radiation, or alternatively, the protective layer may comprise a high wax content varnish which may be applied by any suitable process, for example, by a printing process.
Further alternatively, the protective layer may comprise a varnish which is cured by, for example, infrared radiation.
In each case, the protective layer permits the label to be removably secured to the backing sheet, and when the label is removed, enables the printed face of the backing sheet to be seen through the protective layer.
The adhesive of the label may be of any suitable low tack type, for example a latex based adhesive which may be applied by a silk screen printing technique.
According to a second aspect of the invention we provide a method of manufacturing a combination of a label and a backing sheet in accordance with the first aspect of the invention comprising the steps of printing on a face of the backing sheet, applying a protective layer of material onto the printed face of the backing sheet, applying adhesive to a face of the label, and laminating the backing sheet and label together with the label separated from the printed face of the backing sheet, by the protective layer.
Preferably the backing sheet and label each comprise part of a respective continuous strip of backing sheet or label material, in which case the method may include the step of severing the combined backing sheet and label from their respective continuous strips, preferably subsequently to the laminating step.
The produced combination may include any features of the combination of the first aspect of the invention.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE I is a perspective view of a combination of a label and backing sheet in accordance with the first aspect of the invention, with the label partly removed.
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view through part of the combination of Figure FIGURE 3 is an illustrative diagram showing a method by which the combination of Figures 1 and 2 may be produced.
Referring to the drawings, a combination 10 of a label II and a backing sheet 12 is shown.
The label 11 is of the self adhesive type, and in this example, is printed on an upper face 13 thereof as illustrated by the printed regions P in Figure 2, and has a layer 14 of adhesive, of the latex based type, applied to the opposite face of the label I I to that which is printed.
The label 11 is made of a suitably strong paper.
The backing sheet 12 is also made of paper, and is printed on one face 15 thereof, as illustrated by the printed regions 16 seen in Figure 2.
A layer 17 of a transparent protective material is applied to the face 15 of the backing sheet 12 over the printed regions 16, and prevents the adhesive 14 from contacting the printed regions 16 so that when the adhesive label 11 is removed from the backing sheet 12, the printed regions 16 are not damaged by being removed along with the adhesive 14.
Referring to Figure 3, a continuous strip of label material 11' is fed from a roll 20 through a printing station 21 where the face 13 of the label is printed, and then to a silk screen printing station 22 in which the layer 14 of adhesive is applied to the opposite face of the label II to that which the printing station 21 applies the print.
A continuous strip 12' of backing sheet material is fed from a further roll 24 first through a printing station 25, in which the print 16 is applied to the face 15 of the backing sheet 12, and then to a further printing station 26 in which the protective layer 17 is applied to the face 15 of the backing strip 12' over the printed regions 16.
The protective layer 17 in this example, is a high gloss UV varnish which is then cured by ultra voilet light provided at a further work station 27.
The label strip 11' which is thus printed on the face 13 thereof, and has the layer 14 of adhesive applied to the opposite face thereof, is then fed to a laminating station 30 along with the backing strip 12' which has been printed on a face 15 thereof, and has the protective layer 17 applied over the printed regions 16.
At the laminating station 30, the label strip I I' and backing strip 12' are laminated together to provide a continuous strip 3 1 of combined label strip II' and backing strip 12'.
The continuous strip 31 is then fed to a cutting station 32 at which the continuous strip 31 is cut into individual combinations 10 as described with reference to Figures I and 2.
It will be appreciated that the printing station 21 may print the label 11 by any known method, although preferably the method is an offset litho printing process, and similarly, the printing station 25 which prints the face 15 of the backing sheet 12, is preferably also an offset litho printing station.
The adhesive applying station 22 preferably applies the adhesive to the label strip II' using a conventional silk screen printing technique which preferably applies the adhesive to the entire area of the label II, but may apply adhesive over parts only of the label 11, if required. The station 26 at which the layer 17 of the protective material is applied, preferably also applies the layer 17 by a litho offset printing technique and again, preferably the layer 17 is applied over the entire area of face 15, but may if desired, only be applied over the printed regions 16.
The label II and backing sheet 12 may be printed identically, or differently, depending on the use to which the combination 10 is to be put.
However it will be appreciated that the label 11 and backing strip 12 may be printed in black and white, colour, or however desired, and with any information desired.
Although as described with reference to figure 3, the combination of label 11 and backing sheet 12 is provided by feeding a continuous strip of label material II' and a continuous strip of backing sheet material 12' through the various work stations, other techniques may be employed to produce the combination 10 described.
Although in the example described, the backing sheet 12 and label II are both made of paper, if desired, one or other of these may be made of another material which may be printed by any desired technique.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, or a class or group of substances or compositions, as appropriate, may, separately or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.
