Abstract
A bird feeder is hung above ground from a tension loop 3 suspended between two lines 2 attached at one end to suitable supports. Each suspension line passes through the hub of a smooth rigid lightweight disc 4, which is thus free to rotate but otherwise restrained from movement by location pins 5 tied into the suspension lines 2 either side of the tension loop 3. Animals progressively lose sight of the bird feeder when crawling along a suspension line 2 and cannot surmount the smooth lightweight disc 4 maintained by the hub at right angles to the suspension line. <IMAGE>
Description
WEIRD FEWER PROTECTOR 1. This invention is to protect feeders for birds from other indigenous forms of animal life.
Various feeders for wild birds on the market all suffer from depredation or damage by agile climbing animals such as cats and squirrels.
3. According to this present invention a feeder is suspended above the ground between two suitable supports.
A tension loop attached to the suspension acts as a hanger for the feeder.
Smooth lightweight rigid discs on either side of the tension hanger loop at right angles to the suspension lines protect the bird feeder.
Animals approaching the disc along the suspension lines progressively loose sight of the bird feeder and additionally are not able to surmount the disc.
4. A specific embodiment of the invention will no. be described by way of example with reference to the attached drawing:
Fig 1. Illustrates the Bird Feeder Protector.
Fig 3. n " Tension Hanger loop
Fig 4. n " Smooth Lightweight Discs.
Fig 5. " it Restraint location Pins.
The Bird Feeder Protector refering to Fig 1. comprises two lengths of line 2 fixed to suitable supports at one end and joined together at the other by means of a tension loop 3 which is also used to hang and locate a bird feeder above ground level.
Each suspension line is threaded through the hub of a smooth lightweight disc 4 which is thus free to rotate but otherwise restrained from independent movement by locating pins 5 in the suspension lines.
One suspension line 2 is fixed to a support and the at6embly consisting of 2, 3, 4, & 5 lifted from the ground by pulling the second suspension line 2 taut and securing to the other support.
Claims (21)
1. A bird Feeder Protector whereby a feeder is suspended above the ground between two suitable supports.
The tension loop attached to the suspension lines acts as a hanger for the feeder.
Smooth lightweight rigid discs on either side of the central hanger at right angles to the suspension lines protect both the feeder and birds
Animals approaching the disc along the suspension lines progressively loose sight of the bird feeder and additionally are not able to surmount the disc.
2. A Bird Feeder Protector as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the suspension lines consist of suitable waxed string and or/wire.
3. A Bird Feeder Protector as claimed in Claims 1 & 2 wherein smooth lightweight rigid discs are maintained by hubs at right angles to the suspension lines.
4. A Bird Feeder Protector as claimed in Claims 1, 2, & 3 wherein the discs are free to rotate on the suspension line.
5. A Bird Feeder Protector as claimed in Claims 1, 2, 3, & BR< 4 wherein the discs are located in position on the suspension lines by pins.
6. A Bird Feeder Protector as claimed in Claims 1, 2, & 3 wherein the two suspension lines are joined by a tension loop which acts as a locating hanger for the bird feeder and also accommodates any movement in the system.
7. A Bird Feeder Protector substantially as described herein with reference to Figs 1, 3, 4, & 5 of the accompanying drawing.
Amendments to the claims
have been filed as follows 1. A bird feeder protector whereby a proprietary feeder is
suspended above ground between trees, walls, posts or other
suitable means of support.
a A tension loop joins two suspension lines and acts as
a hanger for the feeder.
b The suspended height of the hanger must be sufficient
to prevent animals reaching the feeder directly by
jumping from ground level.
Animals approaching the discs along the suspension lines
progressively lose sight of the feeder and cannot surmount
the discs which are smooth and free to rotate on the
suspension lines.
2. A bird feeder protector as claimed in Claim 1. wherein the
suspension lines consist of waxed cord coated wire or
other material strong enough to elevate the discs, tension
loop, locating pins, bird feeder and feed between the
supports without failure.
3. A bird feeder protector as claimed in Claim 1. & 2.
wherein the suspension lines can be fixed to, and between
existing trees, and walls or other suitable supports.
4. A bird feeder protector as claimed in Claim 1. & 3.
wherein two suspension lines which may be equal in length
are linked together by a tension loop.
5. A bird feeder protector as claimed in Claims 1. 2. 3. & 4.
wherein each suspension line is tied at one end to the
tension loop.
6. A bird feeder protector as claimed in Claims 1. 4. & 5.
wherein the tension loop acts as a hanger for the bird
feeder.
7. A bird feeder protector as claimed in Claims 1. 4. 5. & 6.
wherein the tension loop accommodates longitudinal,
vertical and horizontal movement in the suspension lines
and bird feeder.
8. A bird feeder protector as claimed in Claims 1. 4. 5. 6.
& 7 wherein the tension loop is in the shape of a hairpin
with the free ends bent inwards so as to be at right angles
to the catenary of the suspension lines.
9. A bird feeder protector as claimed in Claims 1. 2. 3. & 4.
wherein smooth lightweight rigid discs are located on the
suspension lines a fixed distance either side of the
tension loop and bird feeder.
10. A bird feeder protector as claimed in Claims 1. & 9.
wherein the diameter of the discs related to distance
from the tension loop is such as to progressively obscure
visibility of the bird feeder as animals approach along
the suspension lines.
11. A bird feeder protector as claimed in Claims 1. 9. & 10.
wherein the discs are rigid and will not flex due to
animal action.
12. A bird feeder protector as claimed in Claims 1. 9. 10. & 11.
wherein each disc has a central hub projecting from one
side.
13. A bird feeder protector as claimed in Claims 1. 9. 10. 11.
& 12. wherein there is a small diameter central hole
through the disc and projecting hub to accommodate the
suspension line.
14. A bird feeder protector as claimed in Claims 1. 9. 10. 11.
12. & 13. wherein the disc is maintained at right angles
to the suspension line by threading the line through the
central hole in the disc and hub.
15. A bird feeder protector as claimed in Claims 1. 9. 10. 11.
12. 13. & 14. wherein the diameter of hole just allows free
rotation of the disc and hub around the suspension line.
16. A bird feeder protector as claimed in Claims 1. & 9.
wherein locating pins either side of each protector disc
and hub restrain movement along the suspension lines.
17. A bird feeder protector as claimed in Claims 1. 9. & 16.
wherein the locating pins are short cylinders of suitable
material.
18. A bird feeder protector as claimed in Claims 1. 9. 16. & 17.
