Abstract
An extractor apparatus comprising ground engaging means 13, 14, uprights 19, 20 fixed to said means, a support base 21 mounted on said means, a table 27 located on said uprights above the base, said table having an opening 30 therein, and jaws 37, 38 movably mounted on said table. The apparatus can be used to extract, for example, a bearing race from an axle by putting the axle through the opening 30 towards the base 21 and gripping the race between the jaws 27, 38. A jack can act between the base and the axle. <IMAGE>
Description
EXTRACTOR APPARATUS
This invention relates to an extractor apparatus for extracting one element e.g. a bearing race from another element e.g. a motor car half back axle shaft or a motorcycle crank shaft.
It is not uncommon to require a motorist to buy a complete new half shaft with bearing instead of merely replacing the bearing or if an attempt is made to remove the bearing this often results in damage to the shaft.
According to the present invention the extractor apparatus comprises ground engaging means, uprights fixed to said means, a support base mounted on said means or base, a table located on said uprights above the base, said table having an opening therein, and jaws movably mounted on said table.
A shaft can be entered through said opening, the jaws can be moved to engage over the bearing or other element to be removed from the shaft, and a jack can be operated between the base and the shaft to push the shaft through the bearing or other element.
The jack may be a loose jack of a kind normally available in a workshop. The jack could however be fixed to the base desired.
The table may be adjustable for height. The jaws may be a pair of jaws movable laterally and may each be in the form of a channel having limbs to engage above and below the race.
The invention will be further described by way of example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of an extraction apparatus made in accordance with the invention;
FIGURES 2,3 & 4 are a front view, plan and side elevation thereof;
FIGURE 5 is a sectional view on the plane 5-5 on
Figure 2;
FIGURES 6,7 & 8 are sectional views on the planes 6-6, 7-7 and 8-8 respectively on Figure 5; and
FIGURE 9 is a view showing a motor-vehicle half shaft and bearing in position in the apparatus.
The apparatus comprises ground engaging feet 13,14 connected together by channel bars 15,16 and supporting two channel uprights 19,20; the bars and uprights being welded together and to the feet.
Between the uprights and welded to the bars 15,16 is a support base plate 21.
Holes 22 are provided in the flanges of the uprights to receive steel pins 24,25 that project from both sides of the uprights.
A table 27 has a recess at each end to receive the uprights, leaving lugs 28,29 on each side of the uprights. These lugs can engage against the pins 24,25 which may be inserted above and below the table.
In the centre of the table there is a rectangular opening 30 below which there are two support strips 32,33 attached to vertical members 34,35 which are welded to the table.
Within the opening are two jaws 37,38 of channel shape which slide on the strips 32,33 and engage the underside of the table. The jaws have arcuate recesses in their upper flanges and these are undercut at I4O,'4l.
The upper ends of the uprights are connected together by a bar 44.
In Fig. 9 the half shaft 45 with race 46 is shown engaged. The lips formed by the undercuts 40,41 enter between the race 46 and the rings 47. Upward force on the shaft presses the race against these lips to press the shaft through the race. As soon as the race is pressed off its seating it slips off the shaft.
The apparatus of the invention may also be used for pressing on and removing the races of gearbox main and spigot shafts.
Claims (6)
1. An extractor apparatus comprising ground engaging means, uprights fixed to said means, a support base mounted on said means or base, a table located on said uprights above the base, said table having an opening therein, and jaws movably mounted on said table.
2. An extractor apparatus as claimed in Claim 1 wherein two said jaws are movable towards and away from each other to accommodate an article through them which article carries an extractable member.
3. An extractor apparatus as claimed in Claim 2 wherein the jaws slide on support means welded to the table, said jaws being located between the table and said support means.
4. An extractor apparatus as claimed in Claim 1,2 or 3 wherein the ends of the table slidingly engage the uprights to be adjustable vertically and the uprights are provided with pins for locating the table in adjusted positions.
5. An extractor apparatus as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein the jaws are channel shaped to locate above and below a race to be extracted from a shaft.
6. An extractor apparatus substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
