Abstract
220,863. Harrigan, L. T. Dec. 3, 1923. Automatic speed control. - The brakes of an automobile are applied at a predetermined excessive speed by a governor controlling the valve of a brake system in which fluid normally kept in idle circulation by a pump can be transferred from one side of a brake piston to the other to effect the application of the brakes. A gear wheel pump 36 normally circulates fluid in a circuit comprising pipes 19, 26 and a valve 41 the stem of which is connected to a centrifugal governor 32 mounted on the shaft 33 of one of the pump rotors. The shaft 33 is driven from the driving shaft of the vehicle. The chambers on the two sides of the brake piston 9 are connected to the fluid circuit by pipes 18, 26<1> so that when, in the event of excessive speed, the valve 41 is closed by the governor, fluid will be transferred by the pump from the front side of the piston 9 to the rear side thereof, thereby applying the brakes. The piston 9 is arranged to actuate the existing brakes by the provision of a cross-piece secured to the brake rod and passing through a longitudinal slot in the rod of the piston.
