Description

TITLE: STAY FOR A WINDOW. DOOR OR THE LIKE DescriPtion The invention relates to a stay for a window, door or the like to enable the door or window to be adjustably fixed sufficiently open to allow ventilation.
Many devices are known for propping windows in particular slightly open for the purposes of ventilation and such devices are often in the form of a simple adjustable stay comprising an arm hinged to the window and formed with several detents which can be selectively engaged by a detent pin fixed to the window frame to prop the window open. Such devices have the virtue of simplicity but suffer various disadvantages such as a lack of aesthetic appeal and poor security against intruders.
It is an object of the invention to provide a simple adjustable stay for a door or window, particularly a window of the so-called tilt and turn kind, the mechanism of which is largely concealed in use.
According to the invention there is provided an adjustable stay for a pivoted member such as a window, door or other flap-like member, comprising a first part adapted to be secured to a member defining the aperture closed by and surrounding the pivoted member, the aperture surrounding member hereinafter being referred to as "the frame", the adjustable stay being arranged to be positioned between the frame and the pivoted member, the first part comprising abutment means extending obliquely of the width of the frame, means mounting the first part on the frame for limited movement in a direction parallel to the plane of the frame, manually operable means for moving the first part along the frame and means for releasably fixing the first part in a plurality of different positions along the frame and a second part adapted to be secured to the pivoted member and comprising a projection adapted to engage the abutment means on the first part to limit hinging of the opening member in the frame, the arrangement being such that movement of the first part will cause engagement of the projection with different parts of the abutment means to vary the attitude of the pivoted member in its frame.
Preferably the abutment means is formed with a series of steps with which the projection can be selectively engaged. The abutment means may comprise a slot or groove in which the projection can engage. The groove or slot may be formed with the series of steps along one side thereof and is plain along the other side thereof. The first part may be formed with manually operable means in the form of a handle or knob so that it can be moved manually relatively to the frame to the extent permitted by the mounting means.
Thus the device would be arranged such that the first part can be moved from one end position in which the projection on the frame is disengaged from the abutment means to permit free movement of the pivoted member, to an intermediate position in which the projection engages the abutment to fix the pivoted member in a given attitude with respect to the frame, the arrangement being such that further movement of the first part will cause the projection to engage further portions of the abutment means whereby the pivoted member will be moved into different attitudes with respect to the frame.
The abutment means may be arranged to interengage with the projection such that they cannot be disengaged one from the other except when in certain relative positions. If desired the slot or groove in the abutment means can be wider at its base than at its mouth such that the abutment means interengages with the projection so that they cannot be disengaged one from the other except when in certain relative positions.
Preferably the slot is of inverted T-section and the projection is formed with an enlarged head so that it can only be disengaged from the slot at the end thereof. In this way the security of the device can be enhanced.
The invention is diagrammatically illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which: Figures la to ic illustrate a first embodiment of the invention; Figures 2a to 2f illustrate a second embodiment of the invention, and Figures 3a and 3k illustrate a modification to the embodiment illustrated in Figure 2.
The stay devices illustrated in the drawings are particularly intended for use with so-called tilt and turn windows which open inwards about both horizontal and vertical axes. In each case the mechanism is intended to be housed between the window and its associated frame so that in use it is substantially hidden from view and is operated from the interior. It will be understood however that the mechanisms illustrated in the drawings could be used with other hinged devices such as doors and the like.
In Figure 1 a stay mechanism generally indicated at 10 for a tilt and turn window 11 comprises a first part 12 which is generally plate-like and may be made from sheet steel and which is formed with a parallel pair of longitudinally extending slots 13 each of which accommodates a peg 15 fixed to the frame 14 of a window (not shown) whereby the first part can be slid along the frame to the extent permitted by the length of the slots.
The first part is formed with an abutment means 17 which comprises a strip-like member fixed to the plate 12 by one long edge to define a slot or channel 24 extending shank wise across the plate 12 and which is smooth along one side 27 and stepped along the other side 28. The first part is also formed with a manually actuable handle 16 which is arranged in use to project from the inner side of the window frame. The stay also comprises a second part 20 as shown in Figures 1b and 1c and which comprises a projection in the form of a roller 22 mounted on a plate 21 adapted to be secured e.g. by means of screws 23 to the window (not shown).
In operation the roller 22 is disposed so that in one limiting position of the first part the roller is out of contact with the abutment means 17 to permit free pivoting movement of the window, the arrangement being such that on movement of the first part from its one limiting position the roller engages the abutment means 17 so that pivoting of the window is prevented and the window is fixed partly open. On further movement of the first part the roller will engage further portions of the step like abutment means so that the window is moved to different positions so that for example the ventilation in a room can be accurately adjusted.
Thus the roller 22 engages one of the steps 28 to hold the window partly open and engages the smooth side 27 when the window is closed, to return the first part to its initial position in which the roller can be disengaged from the abutment means.
The embodiment of Figure 2 resembles that of Figure 1 but here the first part 12 is made from a relatively thick plate of metal or hard plastics into which the abutment means is formed as a slot 24 e.g. by milling or the like. Like Figure 1, the abutment means has a smooth side 27 and a stepped side 28 for the purpose aforesaid. In this case the slot 24 is terminated by an entrance section 31 which extends transversely of the length of the part 12 and opens through one long edge of the plate.
Referring to Figures 3a and 3b, it will be seen that, if desired, in the arrangement of Figure 2, the slot 24 in the plate-like first part 12 is formed as an inverted T and that the second part 20 is formed with a projection comprising a roller 22 mounted on a stem 29, the roller 22 being enlarged with respect to the stem so that it can engage in the T-section slot 24 but cannot be removed therefrom unintentionally or by the use of force.
In this way the security of the device is enhanced.
The invention thus provides a simple and inexpensive stay mechanism for accurately controlling the tilting or opening of a window or door to permit ventilation while providing enhanced security against intruders and overcoming the problem of known visually obtrusive stays. The stay can be fitted to existing windows or doors or incorporated at the time of manufacture of those items.
