Abstract
A monitoring system comprises an adjustable temperature dependent electrical switch 10 connected to an alarm 12 arranged to provide an alarm signal whenever the ambient temperature falls below a predetermined chosen value. An electric fire 14 may also be energized. The system is useful for protecting elderly persons from hypothermia. <IMAGE>
Description
MONITORING SYSTEMS
The invention relates to monitoring systems.
A common problem exists, especially for elderly folk in cooler climes, in which their environment temperature falls below a life supporting level for the person involved. Many deaths result from hypothermia following on the low temperature causing the person to loose consciousness and then die. Simply rousing or warming the person before actual death is all that is normally required to prevent death.
It is an object of the invention to provide a suitable simple monitoring system for dealing with this problem.
According to the invention there is provided a monitoring system comprising an adjustable temperature dependent electrical switch connected to an alarm circuit arranged to provide an alarm signal whenever the temperature falls below a predetermined chosen value.
The alarm signal may be audible and/or visual and may comprise an initiating signal arranged to switch on a heater or heating system.
Monitoring systems according to the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying schematic diagrams in which:
Fig. 1 in the layout of an audible alarm system; and
Fig. 2 is a layout of an alarm system arranged to control the operation of an electrical fire.
Referring to the drawing, in Fig, 1 a temperature sensitive switch 10, which closes whenever the temperature falls below a chosen value, is coupled to a battery pack 11 and to a buzzer 1-2.
The switch 10 is preferably variable in its operation so that different threshhold temperature settings can be used for different locations in a dwelling or for different users according to their age and physical condition.
In use, the buzzer 12 is energised as soon as the environmental temperature falls below the chosen valve to rouse the occupant of the dwelling if necessary or to at least warn the occupant that an unacceptable or, in some senses, a dangerouse low temperature has been reached.
The buzzer 12 may be replaced by a lamp, preferably a flashing lamp, so that for example a deaf occupant can also be warned.
The buzzer 12 may alternatively be provided with a lamp so that an audible and visual warning is produced at the same time. The alarms may be provided within the dwelling of the user or, one or both of alarms provided outside the dwelling to alert passers-by or a central supervisor for example in an old aged home complex.
In Fig.2, the switch 10 and the buzzer 12 are connected in series with a manually operable switch 13 across a mains supply. An electric fire 14 is connected to the switch 13. The switch 13 has three manually selectable settings - the first to switch ON the fire 14, the second to connect the fire 14 to the supply if the switch 10 is closed, and the third to isolate the switch 10 from the fire 14.
In use, whenever the user requires to switch on the fire 14, the switch 13 can be used as a conventional switch. If the fire is not switched ON and the temperature falls below the chosen level, the buzzer 12 sounds (and/or a flashing lamp is energised) and the fire 14 is automatically turned ON. Usually the switch 13 is arranged to enable the buzzer 12 to be immediately de-energised for a short period of time (say 10 minutes). Should the temperature not have risen at the end of the time period above the chosen level, the buzzer will again be energised automatically.
The output of the switch 13 may be connected to a central heating system, and if necessary to override any timed cut-out, so that the heating system is turned ON if the temperature falls below the chosen level and while the alarm signal is generated.
Claims (6)
1. A monitoring system comprising an adjustable temperature dependent electrical switch connected to an alarm circuit arranged to provide an alarm signal whenever the temperature falls below a predetermined chosen value.
2. A monitoring system according to claim 1 in which the alarm signal is audible and/or visual.
3. A monitoring system according to claims 1 or 2, in which the alarm signal comprises an initiating signal arranged to switch on a heater or heating system.
4. A monitoring system according to any preceding claims, which is used within a domestic dwelling.
5. A monitoring system according to claim 4, in which the alarm is provided outside the dweling to alert, for example, passers-by.
6. A monitoring system substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to any one or more of the accompanying figures.
