Abstract
A package accommodating a plurality of articles, such as containers, arranged in two or more rows has a plurality of erected separating tabs t1-t4 folded out of a base panel 16, each of the tabs t1-t4 including a central part (30, figure 2) hinged at one peripheral edge of a respective aperture a1-a4 in the base panel 16, from which the tab is struck, and opposite wing portions (42, 44, figure 2) hinged to the central part. The wing portions of each tab are supported by the base panel 16 adjacent the periphery of the respective aperture remote from the one peripheral edge to maintain the tab in an erected position. The tabs t1-t4 form an interrupted keel which separates the base portions of adjacent rows of articles. <IMAGE>
Description
PA CKA GE WITH FOLDABLE SEPARATOR
TABS FOR SPACING ROWS OF ARTICLES
This invention relates to a package preferably of the wraparound type which includes foldable separator tabs for spacing apart base portions of one row of articles from those in an adjacent row.
The package is particularly suitable for packaging two or more rows of containers of the type having top flanges and which are connected to similar containers by their top flanges to form a group of e.g four containers.
Since such containers are connected only by their top flanges there is a tendency for their bases to swing relative to one another about their flanged connection. When such containers are packaged in two or more rows this freedom of movement at their bases causes distortion cf the package, particularly a wrap-around package which may lead to dislodgement of the containers.
The present invention seeks Xto overcome this disadvantage by maintaining the base portions of one row of such containers spaced from the base portions of an adjacent row of such containers.
The invention prcvides a package accommodatinp c pluraity of articles arranged in two or more rows which package comprises a top panel ana a base panel spaced apart by a pair of side wall panels thereby forming a tubular structure, said base panel having a plurality of erected tabs folded out of said base panel and forming an interrupted separating keel between base portions of one row of articles seated on the base panel and base portions of an adjacent row of articles seated on the base panel characterised in that each of said erected tabs includes a central portion hinged at one peripheral edge of an aperture in the base panel from which the tab is struck and opposite wing portions hinged to said central portion which ere supported by the base panel adjacent the periphery of said aperture remote from said one peripheral edge to maintain the tab in an erected position.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view of a blank from which a carton according to the invention is formed;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of a part of the blank showing the foldable keel tabs in partially erected position; FIGURE 3 is a view similar to FIGURE 2 but showing the foldable keel tabs in erected position;
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of a carton formed from the blank shown in FIGURE 1, as seen from one end;
FIGURE 5 is a perspective view of a carton formed from the blank shown in FIGURE 1, as seen from beiow and to one side, and
FIGURE 6 is an enlarged plan view of one of the foldable keel tabs in flat collapsed condition::
Referring to the drawings, the flat elongate blank 10 shown in
FIGURE 1 is formed from paperboard or similar foldable sheet material and comprises, in series, a glue strip panel 12, first side wall panel 14, a base panel 16, a second side wall panel 18 and a top panel 20 hinged one to the next alon transverse fold lines 22,24,26 and 28, respectively.
The side wall panel 14 is formed with a series of article heel retaining aperture 'A' which interrupt fold line 2 and a similar series of article heel retaining cSerL-ew ' c formed in side wall panel 18 which interrupt fc'3 line 2r.
These apertures receive peripheral wall portions at the bases of the containers to be packaged and assist in the retention of the articles as is well known.
The base panel 16 is formed with a central row of foldable tabs 'that4' which are all of similar construction and for brevity tab ti only is now described in mare detail with particular reference to FIGURES 1,3 and 6. Tab t7 comprises a segmental portion struck from the base panel 16 such that a central part 30 of the tab is hinged along fold line 32 to a cordal edge 34 of the aperture al, which tab t1 defines. The central part 30 of the tab is, in part, defined by a pair of parallel fold lines 36 and 38 extending perpendicularly from the opposite extremities of fold line 32 to the arcuate edge 40 of the aperture. Fold lines 36 and 38 each provide the hinged connection by which opposite wings 42 and 44 respectively, are foldably joined to the central part 30 of tab t1.
Tab t1 may be manipulated from the flat collapsed position shown in FIGURE 1 to an erected condition as best shown in
FIGURES 3 and 4. To this end, first tab t1 is folded out of the plane of base panel 16 about fold line 32 into the upright condition shown in FIGURE 2 in which the wings 42 and 44 are aligned with, i.e lie in the same vertical plane as, the central part 3O of the tab. The wings are then hinged with respect to central part 30 about fold lines 36 and 38 away from cordal edge 34 of aperture al.In so doing the lowermost edges of the wings wipe along the surface of base panel 16 adjacent the arcuate edge 40 of the aperture al so that once folded the wings support the tab in erected.conditio. In order to prevent the wing tips snagging on the edge of aperture al the tips are radiused as shown at 42a,44a, respectively or otherwise chamfered or bevelled. The tab in its most stable erected condition when the wings 42 and 4 are substantially parallel to one another as is the case when the carton 'P' is loaded as shown in FIGURE . All the other winged tabs t2-t4 are erected in similar m.w?ore.
The blank 10 illustrated in FIGURES 1 to 3 is fabricated so as to form a package of two rows R7 and R2 of uniform articles 'c' with four articles in each row as shown in FIGURES 4 and 5.
However, it is envisaged that a modified blank may form a carton with a different number of articles in each row, e.g two articles and/or two or more tiers of articles stacked one atop the other.
When all the winged tab that4 have been erected as shown in
FIGURE 3, articles may be brought into position upon the base panel and the blank wrapped about the articles to form the completed package whereby the erected tabs form an interrupted central separating keel which separated the articles in one row seated on the base panel from adjacent articles in the other row seated on the base panel. Once the articles are positioned upon the base panel, the side wall panels 14 and 18 are foloed about fold lines 24 and 26, respectively, into an upright position and the glue strip panel 12 and top panel 20 folded about fold lines 22 and 28 respectively into overlapp Ing relationship over the tops of the articles =nd secured together as by gluing.The top panel 20 includes finger holes 20a,20 to facilitate portage of the package.
Preferring again to FIGURE 6, in order to ensure that the tabs can be retained in an erected condition it will be appreciated that the minimum length '1' of each wing portion 42 and 44 is greater than the maximum width 'w' of the tab aperture as measured between the opposed cordal and arcuate peripheries.
In erecting the tabs it is envisaged that this may be accomp lished by relative movement between the containers and the blank during loading of the containers. Thus, once the tabs have been brought into their upright position as seen in
FIGURE 2, the winged portions may be folded across tne assoc- ated aperture 'a' by engagement with the conta:nes as the containers are introduced onto the base panel Cr the blank during relative movement between the blank and containers.
