Abstract

The guitar pickup switching circuitry provides fourteen different modes of selection of three pickups, 12, 13 and 14 as follows: Any one individual pickup; any two pickups in phase, either in series or in parallel; all three pickups in phase, either in series or in parallel; pickups 12 and 13 in series out of phase; pickups 13 and 14 in series out of phase; and pickup 13 in series out of phase with both pickup 12 and pickup 14. Toggle switches 15 AB, 16 AB, 17 AB function as on-off switches for pickups 12, 13 and 14 respectively. The three-way rotary switch 18 ABCD connects the selected pickups in parallel mode, in series mode, or in series out of phase mode. Using the system described above, the musician can easily select any one of fourteen different sounds covering a wide tonal range. <IMAGE>

Description

ELECTRIC GUITAR PICKUP SWITCHING CIRCUITRY This invention relates to a unique type of pickup switching circuit for use in any electric guitar employing three electromagnetic pickups.
Most guitars employing three pickups allow for the selection of any one pickup, or any one of two parallel pairs of pickups, giving five switch positions in all.
According to the present invention there is provided a pickup switching circuit which makes use of combinations, both in series and in parallel, of the three pickups as well as offering the facility of selecting any one pickup from three. This allows for fourteen different modes of pickup selection in all.
The switching facilities are as follows: Any one pickup from three can be individually selected.
Any in phase combination of two pickups from three, either in series or in parallel, can be selected.
All three pickups in phase, either in series or in parallel, can be selected.
Two series out of phase pairs of pickups and all three in series out of phase can be selected, the centre pickup being out of phase with the other two.
The above mentioned switching arrangements provide a wide tonal variation ranging from a sharp hard treble to a very rich mellow sound.
An additional advantage is that the system employs no active electronics, the switching components consisting of three double-pole changeover toggle switches and one four-pole, three-way rotary switch.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows the circuit diagram for the switching system.
Figure 2 shows the component layout and wiring diagram.
Figure 3 shows the scratch plate of an electric guitar with the three toggle switches and one rotary switch fitted in position.
The three toggle switches 15 AB, 16 AB, 17 AB, function as on-off switches for pickups 12, 13 and 14 respectively.
This arrangement allows any one, two or all three of the pickups 12, 13 and 14 to be selected depending on which of the three switches, 15 AB, 16 AB, 17 AB, are down in the "on" position.
Switch 18 ABCD, has three positions. The first position connects the pickups in a parallel configuration; the second position connects the pickups in a series configuration; and the third position connects the pickups in a series out of phase configuration, the centre pickup being connected out of phase with the other two.
As well as this, any single pickup can be individually selected regardless of whether the switch ABCD, is in the "parallel", the "series" or the "series out of phase" position.
The output from the pickups and switching circuit is connected, in the conventional manner, to the guitar's own volume and tone control circuitry.
