Description

- 1.
HUB COUPLING ASSEMBLY 2207488 This invention relates to a hub coupling assembly arranged to effect rigid co-axial connection of a hub to a shaft whilst readily permitting dismantling thereof.
5.
According to the present invention there is provided a hub coupling assembly arranged to be interposed between a hub and a shaft to effect rigid co-axial connection of the hub to the shaft including 10. - slit inner and outer coupling sleeves and first and second wedge rings, the coupling sleeves being formed with pairs of adjoining, complementary, frusto-conical faces tapering from end portions to axially central portions of the sleeves such that the radial gap 15. between the faces adjacent the central portion is less than the corresponding gap adjacent the end portions and the wedge rings each being formed with frusto-conical faces corresponding with the frusto- conical faces on the coupling sleeves to form a 20. sliding fit therewith and provided with means for effecting axial movement of the first wedge ring relative to the second wedge ring, in which first and second locating rings are positioned respectively adjac'ent the end portions of the coupling sleeves to co-act therewith to restrain relative axial movement of the inner coupling sleeve relative to the outer coupling sleeve.
2 The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying, partly diagrammatic, drawings, in which:- 5. Figure 1 is an end view of a hub coupling assembly in position securing a hub to a shaft; Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of a portion of Figure 1, taken on the line II-II to an enlarged 10. scale; and Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view corresponding to a portion of Figure 1, taken on the line III-III to an enlarged scale, at an intermediate stage in dismantling the hub coupling assembly.
As shown in the drawings, an assembly for coupling a hub 2 onto a shaft 4 includes slit, inner and outer coupling sleeves 6, 8 positionable 20. intermediate the shaft and the hub, first and second wedge rings 10, 12 positioned intermediate the coupling sleeves and first and second locating rings 14, 16 also positioned intermediate the coupling sleeves, at end portions 26, 28 and 30, 31 thereof. The inner and 25. outer coupling sleeves 6, 8 are formed with pairs of adjoining complementary frusto-conical faces 18, 20 and 22, 24, tapering from the end portions 62, 28 and 30, 32, to axially central portions 34, 36 of the sleeves such that the radial gap between the faces 18 and 22, i I nL 3 and 24 adjacent the central portions 34, 36 is less than the corresponding gap adjacent the end portions 26 and 30, 28 and 32. The wedge rings 10, 12 are each formed with frusto-conical faces 36, 38 and 40, 42 5. corresponding with the frusto-conical faces 18, 20 and 22, 24 on the coupling sleeves 6, 8 to form a sliding fit therewith. The adjoining faces of the coupling sleeves, adjacent the end portions 26, 28 and 30, 32, are each formed with a circumferential shoulder and 10. groove 44 and 46; 48 and 50; 52 and 54; 56 and 58 respectively to accommodate a complementary circumferential central groove and flanking shoulders 60 and 62, 64; 66 and 68, 70; 72 and 74, 76; 78 and 80, 82; formed respectively on the radially outer face of 15. the inner locating ring 6 and the inner face of the outer locating ring 8.
The second wedge ring 12 is formed with a first array of four, axial, threaded, bores 88 (Fig.3) positioned at 900 intervals and a second array of twelve axial through bores 90 (Fig.2) spaced at 300 intervals registering with corresponding threaded bores 92 formed in the first wedge ring 10. Stud bolts 94 extend through the through bores 90 to engage the 25. threaded bores 92 of the first wedge ring 10.
The second locating ring 16, positioned adjacent the second wedge ring 12, is formed with apertures in register with the through bores 90 to permit the passage of socketed bolt heads 95 of the stud bolts 94 4 5.
10.
bear against the second wedge ring 12. The second locating ring 16 is also formed with apertures in register with the threaded bores 88 to permit the passage of the stud bolts 96.
The number of stud bolts and respective bores utilised is dependant upon the size of the coupling and it will be appreciated that other configurations may be u s e d.
In operation, to assemble the hub coupling assembly, the slit inner coupling sleeve 6 is radially compressed and the first and second wedge rings 10, 12 and the first and second locating rings 14, 16 15. positioned upon the slit inner coupling sleeve, the dimension of the slit therein being such as to permit of a sufficiency of radial compression of the inner coupling sleeve by flexing as to enable the shoulders 64, 70 on the rings 14, 16 to pass over the flanking 20. shoulders 44.348 on the inner coupling sleeve. The through bores 90 in the second wedge ring 16 and the corresponding apertures in the second locating ring are positioned in register with the threaded bores 92 in the first wedge ring 10 and the stud bolts 94 threaded 25. loosely thereinto. The compressive force on the inner coupling sleeve 6 is then released to engage the sleeve with the wedge rings 10, 12 and locating rings 14, 16. Finally, the slit outer coupling sleeve 8 is radially expanded by an amount sufficient as to permit of -Y s] i di ng the 10, 12 and respective grooves 72, 5. To couple a hub 2 to a shaft positioned on the shaft 4 registering with the hub 2 and the stud bolts 94 tightened sequentially to draw the wedge rings 10, 12 together and thereby force the respective coupling sleeves 6, 8 into tight engagement 10. with shaft 4 and the hub 2 to form a rigid connection.
outer sleeve axially over the wedge rings locating rings 14, 16 to bring the shoulders 52, 56 into registration with the 78 and the expansive force then released. 4, the assembly is then To dismantle the assembly, the stud bolts 94 are loosened off and the further stud bolts 96 threaded into the threaded bores 88 in the second wedge ring 12, 15. to pass through the second wedge ring and bear against the first wedge ring. Continued threading of the further stud bolts 96 urges the first and second wedge rings 10, 12 apart until one respective adjacent locating continued threading thrusts the o the respective adjacent locating the coupling.
wedge ring engages the ring 14, 16, whereupon ther wedge ring toward ring and disengages It will be appreciated that the locating rings 25. 14, 16 serve to locate the inner and outer coupling sleeves 6, 8 axially during the assembly operation and assist centring of the hub 2 upon affecting coupling to a shaft 4. To achieve this it is not necesary that the diametrical dimensions of the locating rings 14, 16 are 30. exactly matched to the diametrical dimensions of the 6 shaft 4 and the hub 2, thereby permitting a large tolerance range in the latter dimensions accommodatable by the relative movement between the wedge rings 10, 12 and the coupling sleeves 6, 8 and simplifying assembly.
