Description

APPARATUS FOR OPERATING SLIDING WINDOWS This invention is concerned with apparatus for operating sliding windows, especially sliding windows in motor vehicles.
Windows are mounted in the doors andYor body panels of motor vehicles for example cars, for sliding movement between open and closed positions, usually in a vertical direction. The mechanism which is used to operate the windows must be such that the windows are maintained in the position which they have been moved by the mechanism; for example if the window is closed, it must remain firmly closed whilst if the window is partially opened it must remain in the partially open position without creeping from that position. Various methods have been proposed for operating sliding windows in this way but they have commonlu involved complex systems of pulleys and drive belts.
One of the various objects of the present invention is to provide improved apparatus for operating sliding windows.
There is hereinafter described, to illustrate the invention by way of example, apparatus for operating sliding windows comprising a flexible rod slidable in a tubular housing which comprises a fixed end portion, fixed to a support for the sliding window, for example where the sliding window is mounted in a vehicle door, fixed to the vehicle door. - The flexible rod may be made of any suitable material, for example a flexible yet relatively stiff plastics material. The fixed portion of the tubular housing is inflexible and is curled round to form almost a circle with a portion projecting downwardly which is curved round, terminating in a straight, upwardly facing end portion.Mounted on the upwardly facing end portion is a telescopic portion of the housing comprising a plurality of captive, nesting tubular portions each of smaller diameter than the next adjacent one closer to the fixed portion. The flexible rod is attached to the tubular portion of smallest diameter which is adapted to be connected to the slidable part of the window. Means is provided for sliding the flexible rod relative to the fixed portion of the tubular housing; this moving means conveniently comprises an electric motor operated from the driving position or from a switch on the door adjacent the window having a suitable driving mechanism for driving the rod but other moving means e.g.
a hydraulic motor or a manual system may be provided, as an alternative, if desired. A preferred driving mechanism comprises a worm driven by the electric motor in engagement with a rack cut in the flexible rod.
In one aspect the invention may reside in apparatus for operating sliding windows comprising a flexible rod slidable in a tubular housing comprising a fixed portion which is fixed to a support for a sliding window, and means for sliding the flexible rod relative to the fixed portion of the tubular housing, the tubular housing further comprising a telescopic portion mounted on the fixed portion, the telescopic portion comprising a plurality of nesting tubular portions each of smaller diameter than the next adjacent one closer to the fixed portion, the flexible rod being attached to the tubular portion of the smallest diameter which is adapted to be connected to the slidable portion of the window whereby operation of the means for moving the flexible rod is operative to move the rod and thus slide the window.
There now follows a detailed description, to be read with reference to the accompanying drawings, of apparatus for operating sliding windows embodying the invention. It will be realised that this apparatus has been selected for description to illustrate the invention by way of example.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front view of the apparatus; and Figure 2 is a side view of the illustrative apparatus.
The illustrative apparatus is intended to be mounted in the door or other bodywork of a motor vehicle for example a car to operate a sliding window of the vehicle.
The illustrative apparatus comprises a tubular hosing having a fixed end portion 2 fixed to a portion of the vehicle for example the car door, within which a flexible rod 4 is slidable. The fixed portion 2 of the tubular housing is manufactured of any suitable rigid material, for example of metal and the rod 4 is of a flexible yet fairly stiff material for example a suitable plastics material. As can be seen from Figure 1 the fixed portion 2 of the tubular housing is curved round until one end almost crosses a limb of the fixed portion 2. The fixed portion 2 terminates at the opposite end in a straight, upward facing end portion 3.
The tubular housing further comprises a telescopic portion including three nesting tubular portions 6, 8, 10 each of smaller diameter than the next adjacent one of the tubular portions closer to the fixed portion 3. The telescopic portions ó, 8, 10 are intended to telescope into one another and into the upwardly facing straight end portion 3 of the fixed portion of the tubular housing. The tubular portions 6, 8, 10 are likewise made of a rigid material, for example tubular metal.
One end portion of the flexible rod 4 is fixes to t tubular portion 10 of sue lest diameter which, itself, is adapted to be connected to the slidable part of a vehicle window by connecting means comprising a slide member 12 to which the telescopic tubular portion 11 is attached by clamp means 16. The plate member 22 is @@@@@@@ @@ attached to the window by any suitable means, for example rivets passing through holes 14 in the plate member.
The illustrative apparatus also comprises drive means comprising an electric motor 18 for sliding the flexible rod 4 relative to the fixed portion 2 of the tubular housing. Drive means comprises, in addition, means which can engage the flexible rod to effect sliding motion; suitable engaging means is provided by a worm 20, rotatable by the motor 18. The worm 20 is mounted in engagement with a toothed rack portion 22 formed on the flexible rod 4; the rack portion 22 may conveniently be provided by teeth cut into the material from which the flexible rod 4 is manufactured. The material of the worm 20 and rack portion 22 is selected so that undue wear of the mating parts does not occur in operation of the apparatus. The illustrative apparatus is intended to be mounted, as hereinbefore mentioned, on a suitable part of a vehicle and conveniently both the motor 18, worm 20, and fixed portion 2 of the tubular housing may be secured to a framework (not shown) which itself is fixed to a panel member of the vehicle.
As can be seen from Figure 1 of the drawings, by operation of the motor 18 to rotate the worm 20, the flexible rod 4 may be moved by engagement of the worm 20 with the rack 22 in a direction to extend the telescopic tubular portions 6, 8, 10, from the straight end portion 3 of the fixed part 2 of the housing to move the plate 12 e.g. from a position in which the telescopic portions 6, 8, 10 are partially open in which the plate member is shown in Figure 1 to a position in which the telescopic tubular portions, 6, 8, 10 are fully extended, shown in dash line on Figure 1. When the telescopic tubular portions 6, 8, 10 are fully extended the window itself is in a completely closed position. When the telescopic portions 6, 8, 10 are retracted into one another, the window is gradually opened until it reaches a fully opened position which may be determined by fully telescoping the portions 3, 6, 8, 10 or by means of a separate stop.
The drive means for sliding the rod 4 is selected to be- such that the drive means may be stopped at any point in its operation and will have sufficient resistance to motion to retain the window in the position to which it has been moved. A worm and rack driving connection is particularly well suited for this purpose; if desired a gear mechanism may be provided between the electric motor 18 and the worm 20.
The rigid tubular housing 2, 6, 8, 10 constrains the flexible rod 4 so that it does not flex whilst operating a window to which it is attached, the telescopic portions, 3, 6, 8, 10 guiding the flexible rod along a substantially straightr vertical path to move the window.
The space available in a vehicle body to house the window operating apparatus is relatively confined and thus the fixed part 2 of the tubular housing is curved round upon itself (see Figure 1) so that the apparatus is compact. The flexible rod 4 (in effect a flexible rack) is able to bend round the appropriate curve and is also able to bend as it passes along the fixed portion 2 until it reaches the straight end portion 3. Furthermore, the apparatus is relatively simple and inexpensive in construction.
Although the drive means of the illustrative apparatus comprises an electric motor other drive means may be provided for example a worm may be rotated by a suitable handle positioned within the vehicle, if desired through one or more meshing gears. The electric motor 18 may be operated by a switch positioned at the driving position or alternatively by a switch adjacent the window. The illustrative apparatus is less prone to malfunction than the known pulley and belt driven systems, as well as being more compact. A part 24 of the window is shown in dash line in Figure 2 in an intermediate position.
