Abstract

The brush arm comprises two electrically conductive strips forming, respectively, a terminal part (10) and a more resilient brush supporting part (11). One end of one strip and one end of the other strip are secured together, such as by one or more upset rivets (13), in face to face relationship and one of the strip (10) has at least one, and as shown two, portions (16) bent over to lie on that side of the strip (10) remote from the strip (11). The overlapping ends of the two strips and the bent over portions (16) are then mounted as a force fit in a groove (17) in a brush support (18). <IMAGE>

Description

A brush arm for an electric motor This invention relates to a brush arm for an electric motor and to an electric motor equipped with such a brush arm.
GB Patent Specification 2126434 discloses a brush arm comprising first and second elongate strips secured together by means of a plurality of projections extending sideways of one of the strips and bent and crimped about the other strip with the strips partly overlapping. The first strip is of highly resilient and electrically conductive metal strip such as phosphor bronze or beryllium bronze and has a commutator contact portion on which a brush proper is mounted and the second strip is of flexible and electrically conductive metal strip, such as copper or brass, and has a portion thereof adapted to serve as a terminal portion for connection externally of the motor. The overlapping parts and crimped projections are required to be mounted as a force fit in a groove in a brush support, the width of the groove being designed to be slightly less than the combined thickness of the two strips and the crimped projections.
The combined thickness of the two strips and the crimped projections is not easily controllable because the projections of said one strip must be firmly crimped about the other strip in order to secure the two strips together and tolerances may build up such that when the two strips are firmly crimped together the required force fit is not achieved.
According to the present invention there is provided a brush arm for an electric motor, comprising two electrically conductive strips forming, respectively, a terminal part and a more resilient brush supporting part, one end of one strip and one end of the other strip being secured together in face to face relationship and one of the strips having at or adjacent to its said one end at least one portion which is bent over to lie on that side of said one strip which side is remote from the other strip.
With this arrangement the combined thickness of the two strips and the bent over portion or portions is controllable as the bent over portion serves no purpose other than to control the thickness of that part of the brush arm which can be inserted in a groove of a brush support.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective exploded view illustrating one embodiment of a brush arm according to the invention and part of a brush support, and Figure 2 is a section taken through the brush arm along line II-II of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the brush arm shown therein comprises two electrically conductive metal strips 10 and 11 forming, respectively, a terminal part and a brush supporting part. The strips 10 and 11 are of different metals, the strip 10 being of a metal to which an external connection can be readily soldered, e.g. brass and the strip 11 being of a more resilient metal, e.g. beryllium copper or nickelsilver.
Strip 11 is narrower than strip 10 and one end of strip 11 is disposed in a depression 12 pressed in one end of strip 10. The strips 10 and 11 are secured together in face to face relationship by one or more upset rivets 13, but alternatively they could be secured together by spot welding.
The other end of strip 10 has a through hole 14 for receiving an external connection and the other end of strip 11 supports a carbon brush 15 in conventional manner.
The strip 10, i.e. the terminal part, has two portions 16 which extend from opposite edges of the strip 10 and which are bent over to lie on the side of the strip 10 remote from the strip 11. The degree to which the portions 16 are bent over can be controlled with the result that the overall thickness of the brush arm in the region of the overlapping portions of the two strips 10 and 11 and the bent over portions 16 in all brush arms is the same.
The overlapping portions of the two strips 10 and 11 and the portions 16 are designed to be mounted as a force fit in a groove 17 having a width which is slightly less than the overall thickness of the brush arm in the region of the overlapping portions of the strips 10 and 11 and the bent over portions 16. The groove 17 is provided in a brush support, e.g. a plastics end cap 18 of a p.m.d.c. motor and a consistent force fit is obtained due to the ability to control the said overall thickness of the brush arm.
The above embodiment is given by way of example only and various modifications will be apparent to persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention defined by the appended claims. For example, there may only be one bent over portion.
However, in this case it will be preferable for the single bent over portion to overlie the side of the strip 10 remote from the strip 11 to a greater extent than do each of the bent over portions shown in the drawings.

Claims (8)
