Abstract

The blade holder (14) of a blade (2) on a blade drum (1), for cutting small sections of tipping paper for filter-tipped cigarettes, has an opening (21) centrally in the area of its radial support, whereby a transverse beam (22) resilient in the radial lane is formed so as to damp the cutting pressure or the impact caused when the cutting edge (16) strikes an anvil drum. <IMAGE>

Description

CUTTING DEVICE FOR SEPARATING SECTIONS FROM A MOVING STRIP OF MATERIAL The invention relates to a cutting device for separating sections from a moving strip of material, in particular for separating small leaves of a coating (tipping) paper strip in a filler application machine of the tobacco processing industry, with a rotating cutting drum, over the peripheral surface whereof the strip of material is guided, and with a rotating blade drum which has at least one blade held in a radial plane so as to tilt, the cutting edge of which blade separates one section from the strip of material each time it rotates on the cutting drum.
The object of the invention is to reduce the ear on the blade of a blade drum as Indicated above or to increase its service life.
This object is achieved according to the invention in that the blade is united with a transverse beam which is resilient in the radial plane when the cutting edge strikes the cutting drum.
According to a preferred embodiment, the blade is located so as to tilt around a bearing located in the area of its axis of symmetry, in the radial plane which cuts the axis of the blade drum.
According to an advantageous embodiment, the beam is formed in the simplest way by an opening in the blade holder.
Resilient cushioning of the cutting pressure of the cutting edge is then achieved in optimum fashion if, according to one embodiment, the opening extends essentially longitudinally and in the vicinity of the edge of the blade holder remote from the cutting edge, whereby according to an additional proposal the opening runs symmetrically to the bearing of the blade.
According to a special embodiment, the blade holder comprises at least two parts, which are combined by means of a layer of solder along a soldered seam. By means of such a layer of solder of determined thickness an additional damping effect is achieved in the cutting process.
With such a two-part embodiment of the blade holder an advantageous development has the opening penetrating both parts of the blade holder substantially in the region of the plane of the soldered seam.
In order to optimise on the one hand the resilience of the blade and on the other hand its durability, an advantageous development provides that that the opening or the transverse beam has a shape which matches the bending stress of the blade holder material.
The advantage achieved with the invention s that on each cut the impact produced by the surface of the blade drum on the blade is resiliently absorbed and thus its effect on the cutting edge is reduced in such a way that the wear to the edge is reduced, the blade has to be adjusted less frequently and its service life is thus considerably extended.
The inherent elasticity imparted by the means according to the invention to the blade holder in the radial load plane of the blade drum also makes the blade holder unsusceptable to breakdown, as external radial spring elements become superfluous with this development.
The invention is described in greater detail below, with reference to the embodiment examples represented in the drawings, wherein Fig. 1 shows a partial longitudinal section of a blade drum executed according to the invention, Fig. 2 shows a side view of a blade inserted ln the blade drum according to Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 shows an alternative embodiment of a blade.
The blade drum 1, shown in Fig. 1 as part Os a cutting device of a coating (tipping) paper guide of a filter application machine, is associated in a known manner not shown, for example according to DE-OS 32 i9 046, with a cutting drum for depositing and guiding a strip of coating paper not shown in the drawing, which strip is guided between the blade drum 1 and the cutting drum. The blade drum 1 carries on its periphery, in grooves parallel to the axis and at a uniform angular distance from one another, blades 2, whereof only one blade is shown in Flg. 1.
The blade 2 is pivotally mounted in its groove.
For this, in an annular groove in the body of the blade drum 1, a support element 3 constituting a bearing is inserted, which element supports the blade 2 approximately in the centre or in the area of its axis of symmetry. A wedge-shaped, bevelled lower edge 4 of the support element 3 corresponds to a wedge-shaped diagonal plane of reference 5 of an adjusting wedge 7 in an axis-parallel bore of the blade drum body, axially adjustable against the force of a spring 6. For the axial adjustment of the adjusting wedge 7 a setscrew 8 is provided, which co-operates with a nut 9. To adjust the height of the blade 2, the adjusting wedge 7 is moved by means of the setscrew 8 in an axial direction, whereby the inclined lower edge 4 of the support element 3 slides on the diagonal reference plane 5. The support element 3 is thus moved further radially either out of the annular groove or into it.The position of the blade is thus adjusted accordingly.
The blade 2 is also spring-loaded endwise. For this purpose a flat spring 11 engages with a blade end, which has a convex projection 10, said spring in turn being under the influence of a compression spring 12, which arranged in a housing ring 13 on the end of the blade drum 1. The pressure of the springs 11, 12 is selected to that at the time of the first cut the blade 2 can easily align itself parallel to tne surface of the cutting drum while retaining its position under the action of the springs. In this way no noise is caused by the blade subsequently striking the surface of the cutting drum on cutting, and by the strike-back of the blade against the floor of the groove or against the support element 3, since the blade is held securely in the position it takes up at the time of the first cut.
The blade 2 inserted in the blade drum i in the embodiment according to Fig. 1 consists of a two-part blade holder 14 and a transverse cutter beam 15 supported by the blade holder 14, with a cutting edge 16. The two parts 17 and 18 of the blade holder 14 are combined by means of a relatively thick layer of solder 19 along a soldered seam 20. In the area of the soldered seam 20, the two blade holder parts 17 and 18 are provided with an elongate opening 21, which extends continuously and symmetrically to both sides of the support element 3.In this way an elastic transverse beam 22 is created in the bearing area or the support bearing area of the blade holder 14, which beam permits an elastic resilience of the blade holder 14 at each cutting process of the blade 2 striking the blade drum, as a result of which the cutting edge 16 of the blade 2 is conserved, which increases the service life of the blade. According to the material composition of the blade holder 14 according to Fig. 1, the opening 21 is created in such a way that the beam 22 has the largest cross-section in the area of the centre line or axis of symmetry of the blade 2. The relatively thick layer of solder 19 has an additional absorbent effect, which also helps to conserve the blade.
Depending on another material composition of the one-piece blade holder 14 according to Fig. 3, the opening 21 can also assume the shape shown therein with slot walls running parallel. The recesses 23 in the blade holder 14 shown in Fig. 1 serve only to reduce the weight of the blade 2.
