Abstract

A free standing positioning mechanism has moving assemblies 3 and 12 carrying pivoted arms 6 and 19 linked together at a rotating joint 23 and holding a reference part 20. The position of the reference part is accurately controlled by moving the assemblies 3 and 12. The angle of the reference part is altered by movement of a chain 23. The reference part carries a tool 21 to suit a specific application such as in a cutting or bending tool. The complete assembly is mounted on a mobile base which is locked into position by bolts 25. <IMAGE>

Description

FREE STANDING POSITIONING MECHANISM.
This invention relates to a Free Standing Positioning Mechanism for use on Pressbrakes and Guillotines are well Back and Front Guages on Pressbrakes and Guillotines are well known mechanisms which comprise a Horizontal Assembly of a contact bars, such that the reference face can be accurately support bars, such that the reference face can be accurately positioned with reference to the vertical center line of the cutting or bending tool.
These Horizontal Assemblies are rigidly fixed to the Pressbrake or Guillotine and are not easly moved either from the back to the front of the machine, or from one machine to another. In addition, during initial installation, they have to be designed to +i.L a particular machine.
According to the present invention there is provided two vertically mounted, moving assemblies, aligned one above the other on support bars. Each assembly carriers a pivoting arm.
The two arms are linked together at the reference +ace by means' of a rotating' joint. The reference face is mount'ed on this moveable joint. Vertical movement of each moving assembly is translated into a horizontal movement of the reference face.
The position Or the reference face can be accurately predicted by means of Pythagoras theorem. Means are provided to adjust the angle 0+ the reference face with respect to the horizontal axis of the pivoting ars. Moreover,"the height of the '' reference face with respect to the horizontal centre line of the machine tool can he adjusted, by altering,the position of the one vertical assembly by,. the same amount and in the same direction as the other, while maintaining the horizontal position firom the tool.In addition, a clamp arrangement, when mounted on the reference face, can provide means of support to the material used on 'the'Pressbrake or Guillotine. The complete structure can be pivoted around the vertical centre .line of the two moveable assemblies and when mounted on a mobile base plate can provide adjustment of the reference fact parallel to the horizontal centre line of the Tool A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which : Figure 1 shows the side elevation of the complete assembly.
Figure 2 shows the plan view of the assembly as used on Pressbrake.
Fcferring to Figure 1, the Free Sanding Positioning Mechanism comprises two moving assemblies s and 12, mounted on guide bars 4 and 14 and positioned by leadscrews 7 and 11 , The complete assembly being mounted on four pillars 17 off a base plate 22 having four ball race units.
Pivoted on the moving assemblies are arms 5 with hollow section 6 holding the rotating joint 23. The reference part 20 is pivoted on this joint by means of a chaIn a 23 carried inside the hollow section 19 and driven by a motor and encorder 18.
The reference part in figure 1 is shown in more detail # by a cut away view as section A-A in figure 2. The referEnce face is shown with a tool 21 used for work on Pressbrakes.
The moving assemblies are accurately positioned by means of Motors 2 and 15. The positions being checked by Encoders 1 and 16. Movement of the assemblies in the directions shown by the arrows 8 and 9 results in an accurately known movement of the reference face in the direction of arrow 10 and calculated by Pythagoras.theorem. movement of the assemblies in the opposite direction, reverses the movement of the reference face. The angle of the reverence face with respect to the horizontal axis is altered by rotating motor 18 such that this angle is maintained the same at each different position of the refer pence f ace.
The height of the tool 21 above the horizontal centre line of the Pressbrake is altered by moving the two assemblies 3 and 12 n the same direction. The direction shown by arrow 8 raises the tool whilst the direction indicated by arrow 9 lowers the tool.
The position of the reference face with respect to the vertical centre line of the Pressbrake Tool is accurately set by means of first positioning the two moving assemblies 3 and 12 at the datum limit switches 24 and 13.
The complete assembly can be moved parallel to thePressbrake ool by means of the mobile baseplate 22 ard ocr'c-'d Into position by two bolts 25.

Claims (4)

1 A Free Standing Positioning Mechanism comprising two vertically mounted moveable assmblies, one above the other, pivoting ars linked together at the rotatable reference ace, whereby the horizontal position from the tending or Cutting ool can be accurately controlled by vertical movement of the moveable assemblies, the reference +ace is adjusted to maintain it perpendicular to the horizontal ax3s s or at an angle set by the operator.
A Free Standing Position Mechanism as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the height of the reference face above the Tool centre line can be control led by adjusting the two moveable assemblies, in the same direction and by the same amount.
3 A Free Standing Positioning Mechanism as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein 2 clamp mechanism is provided on the reference face.
4. n Free Standing Positioning Mechanism as claimed in Claim 2 of Claim 3, wherein means are provided to rotate the complete structure about the vertical centre line of the two moveable assemblies.
5 A Free Standing Positioning Mechanism as claimed in Claim 4 wherein a mobile base plate provides at adjustment of: the reference +ace parallel to the horizontal centre line of the Tool,
