Abstract
A loudspeaker unit comprises an enclosure (10) and baffle board (12) which define between them a rebate (18). A cloth trim (20) comprises a panel of speaker cloth (22) having elastic (24) around its edge. The elasticated edge of the trim (20) is engaged in the rebate (18). <IMAGE>

*Improvements relating to loudspeaker enclosures"
This invention relates to loudspeaker enclosures, and in particular to the mounting of cloth across the front face of such an enclosure.
In good quality audio equipment, a loudspeaker unit has a plurality of speakers (bass; mid-range, tweeter) mounted to a baffle.board which forms the front of a substantial box-shaped enclosure. For good performance, the front face of each speaker chassis is in air-tight sealing engagement with the baffle board and the baffle board itself is in air-tight sealing engagement with the remainder of the enclosure.
It is usual to cover the front of the enclosure with an acoustically-transparent speaker cloth to provide a neat appearance. Mounting this cloth while maintaining the above-mentioned relationships does, however, present some problems. One approach is to secure the cloth permanently to a framework (eg by taking the edge of the cloth to the reverse of the framework), the framework then being fixed to the enclosure. This has the disadvantages-that (1) the procedure is relatively costly in labour and materials, (2) a structural member is present in front of the baffle board, which is acoustically undesirable, and (3) the cloth cannot be removed for cleaning.
One object of the present invention is to remove or mitigate these disadvantages.
The invention accordingly provides a loudspeaker enclosure including top, bottom, and opposed side members, a front baffle board adapted to mount one or more loudspeakers, and a cloth trim for covering the front face of the baffle board; and in which the cloth trim is provided with an elasticated edge which is receivable in a peripheral groove formed rearwardly of the front surface of the baffle board.
Said groove may be formed in the edges of the baffle board itself, or in the top, bottom and side members.
The elasticated edge may suitably comprise a length of elastic within a peripheral hemmed-over portion of the cloth. Preferably, the body of the cloth also has elastic properties.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the drawings, in which:
Figs la; lb and lc are perspective views showing successive stages in applying the cloth trim; and
Fig 2 is a fragmentary side view.
A loudspeaker unit includes an enclosure 10 and baffle board 12 for mounting speakers. In the particular example shown; the baffle board 12 does not extend to the bottom of the unit but cooperates with an additional member 14 to form a bass reflex port 16, as is well known per se. The rear edge of the baffle board 12 is machined such that, when the baffle board 12 is positioned on the enclosure 10, a rebate 18 is formed.
A cloth trim 20 comprises a panel of speaker cloth 22 having elastic 24 run round its edge; this may conveniently be done (not shown) by threading the elastic 24 through a pocket formed by hemming over the edge of the cloth panel 22. The trim is applied as shown in Figs la - lc. By suitably dimensioning the cloth panel 22, the trim 20 in its final position is taut and evenly stretched across the baffle, with the hem and stitching concealed in the rebate 18.
The cloth 22 is preferably itself of an elastic nature.
Speaker cloth is commercially available which is elastic in one direction and non-elastic in the other. One suitable material is that sold under reference 1438 by Radio Silks
Limited of Barking, Essex.
The enclosure 10 and baffle board 12 may be of any suitable conventional material, eg medium density fibreboard or moulded polypropylene.
Claims (6)
1. A loudspeaker enclosure including top, bottom, and opposed side members, a front baffle board adapted to mount one or more loudspeakers, and a cloth trim for covering the front face of the baffle board: and in which the cloth trim is provided with an elasticated edge which is receivable in a peripheral groove formed rearwardly of the front surface of the baffle board.
2. The enclosure of claim 1, in which said groove is formed in the edges of the baffle board.
3. The enclosure of claim 1, in which said groove is formed in the top, bottom and side members.
4. The enclosure of any preceding claim, in which said elasticated edge comprises a length of elastic within a peripheral hemmed-over portion of the cloth.
5. The enclosure of any preceding claim, in which the cloth trim is of a cloth having elastic properties.
6. The enclosure of claim 5, in which the cloth is elastic in one direction and non-elastic in another direction.
