Description

SEALING AND LIKE STRIPS The invention relates to sealing and similar
strips.
More specifically, the invention relates to sealing strips for sealing around openings in vehicle bodies, though is not limited to such applications.
According to the invention, there is provided a longitudinally extending sealing strip having a longitudinally extending base part by means of which the strip is mounted in position, the base part being of substantially constant cross-section throughout its length and being adapted to inter-engage with two different types of fixture spaced apart along the length of the sealing strip.
C> According to the invention, there is also provided a sealing strip for securing around an opening closable by a closure member, comprising a longitudinally extending generally channel-shaped base part made of flexible material and carrying a longitudinally extending relatively soft sealing part, the base part being of substantially constant cross -section throughout its length and being secured to the periphery of the opening at at least one point therearound by means of a relatively rigid first fixture member which engages the 2 outside of the channel of the base part and being secured thereto at at least one other position therearound by a relatively rigid second fixture member which extends into and engages within the channel of the base part.
A sealing strip embodying the invention will now be described. by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a section through part of a motor vehicle body and door, showing the sealing strip in position; Figure 2 is a perspective view of part of the sealing 0 strip shown in Figure 1; Figure 3A shows a channel-type fixture for securing the sealing strip in position and Figure 3B shows the fixture of Figure 3A with part of the sealing strip secured thereby; and Figure 4A shows a stud-type fixture for securing the sealing strip in position and Figure 4B shows the fixture of Figure 4A with part of the sealing strip secured thereby.
3 As shown in Figure 1, the sealing strip indicated generally at 5 is secured (by means to be described) to W the door 6 of the vehicle body. The part of the vehicle body surrounding the vehicle door opening is shown at 8.
7he sealing strip 5 has two parts, a base 10 and a seal 12. The base 10 is extruded from suitable flexible material such as plastics or rubber material and is more clearly illustrated in perspective view in Figure 2.
Advantageously, the base 10 is extruded so as to incorporate a metal core or carrier 14. The carrier 14 may be made up of a number of individual elements arranged alongside each other along the length of the base and joined together by short integral connecting links or perhaps entirely disconnected. Instead, a wire-form carrier could be used, made of wire looped to and fro. Other forms of carrier could be used.
The seal 12 is (in this example) of hollow tubular form with an integral lip 16. Advantageously, the seal 12 is extruded from sponge rubber or similar material.
The base 10 and the seal 12 may be extruded integrally with each other. Instead, they may be manufactured separately and secured together as by adhesive. Whether or not extruded integrally together, they can be of 4 different hardnesses. The shape of the seal can be varied to suit particular applications.
The base 10 is of generally channel form but the distal edges of the side walls of the channel are enlarged so as to provide enlargements 17A and 17B with shoulders 18A and 18B on the outside of the channel and further shoulders 20A and 20B on the inside thereof.
The particular design adopted for the base 10 enables it to be secured in position on the door 6 by two different types of fixture.
One such fixture is shown at 22 in Figure 3A and comprises a channel-shaped rigid metal clip which is secured to the periphery of the door as by spot welding or some other suitable manner. The channel fixture 22 is sized and shaped so as to embrace and grip the outer parts of the enlarged distal edges 17A and 17B of the base 10, as shown in Figure 3B.
The second type of fixture is a stud fixture as shown at 24 in Figure 4A. Such stud fixtures 24 are positioned at intervals around the periphery of the door and rigidly secured thereto. The stud fixtures 24 secure the base in the manner shown in Figure 4B. As shown, the base 10 is pressed down over each stud 24 whose enlarged head is forced through the opening into the channel in the base 10, the inwardly directed enlargements 17A and 17B of the distal edges of the side walls of the base 10 then engaging the underside of the head of the studs 24.
In this way, therefore, the same sealing strip can be used around the entire periphery of a vehicle door opening but can be secured in position by means of two different types of securing fixture. In certain positions around the opening, it may be necessary or advisable to use fixtures of one of the types shown while at other positions around the periphery, the other type of fixture is necessary or advisable.
Although the strip has been shown as being secured to the door of the vehicle, it could of course instead be secured to the periphery of the body 8 surrounding the door opening, such securing being carried out by means of the two different types of fixture illustrated.

Claims (13)

1. A longitudinally extending sealing strip having a longitudinally extending base part by means of which the strip is mounted in position, the base part being of substantially constant cross-section throughout its length and being adapted to inter-engage with two different types of fixture spaced apart along the length of the sealing strip.
2. A strip according to claim 1, in which one type of fixture is a fixture engaging the exterior of the base part and the other type of fixture is a fixture engaging the interior of the base part.
3. A strip according to claim 2, in which the said one type of fixture is a rigid channel sized and shaped to embrace and engage the outside of the base part.
4. A strip according to claim 2 or 3, in which the base part is channel-shaped, and in which the other type of fixture comprises one or more studs sized and shaped to engage within the channel-shape of the base part.
5. A strip according to any preceding claim, in which the base part is. channel-shaped and comprises a base and 7 two side walls defining the channel, the distal edges running along the side walls being each enlarged so as to provide re-entrant longitudinally extending lips partially closing off the mouth of the channel together with longitudinally extending protruberances running along the outsides of the walls of the channel adjacent the distal edges.
6. A sealing strip according to any preceding claim, in which the base is made of plastics or rubber material with an embedded reinforcing metal carrier.
7. A sealing strip for securing around an opening closable by a closure member, comprising a longitudinally extending generally channel-shaped base part made of flexible material and carrying a longitudinally extending relatively soft sealing part, the base part being of substantially constant cross-section throughout its length and being secured to the periphery of the opening at at least one position therearound by means of a relatively rigid first fixture member which engages the outside of the channel of the base part and being secured to at least one other position therearound by a relatively rigid second fixture member which extends into and engages within the channel of the base part.
