Abstract

A sprung divan base (1) comprises a rectangular frame (2) with opposing side members (3) and a plurality of cross members (4) which extend between the lower edges of two opposing side members (3) and support lower springs (5) whose tops lie substantially in the plane of the upper edges of the side members (3), and an upper spring unit (8) which is superposed on the frame (2) and anchored relative thereto with a separating layer (6, 7) or sheet of flexible material interposed between the top of the lower springs (5) and the upper spring unit (8). The lower part (2, 3, 4, 5) of the base (1) functions in the manner of a conventional firm-edge divan base to provide firm support, while the spring unit (8) or upper part of the base (1) acts like a conventional sprung-edge divan to provide additional springiness or cushioning. <IMAGE>

Description

SPRUNG DIVAN BASE The present invention relates to sprung divan bases, particularly for beds.
A typical sprung divan base comprises a rectangular frame with opposing side members and plurality of cross members which extend between the lower edges of two opposing side members and support respective rows of springs whose tops define substantially the plane of the upper surface of the divan base.
Such divan bases may be of the firm-edge type in which the tops of the springs are level with upper edges of the side members of the frame to provide generally a firm, supportive base, or of the sprung-edge type in which the tops of the springs project above the edges of side members of the frame to provide a softer, springier base than the firm-edge type.
The object of the present invention is to provide a sprung divan base which combines the firm support of a firm-edge divan with the relative springiness of a sprung-edge divan.
According to the present invention, there is provided a sprung divan base comprising a rectangular frame with opposing side members and a plurality of cross members which extend between the lower edges of two opposing side members and support lower springing means whose top lies substantially in the plane of the upper edges of the side members, and an upper spring unit which is superposed on the frame and anchored relative thereto with a separating layer or sheet of flexible material interposed between the top of the lower springing means and the upper spring unit. The whole base can be upholstered in a conventional manner.
The lower springing means mayi be constituted, for example, by a spring unit consisting of a multi-spring assembly resting on the cross members or by rows of springs supported by respective cross members. The springs themselves may be of any appropriate type.
In the preferred embodiment, the upper spring unit comprises an assembly constituted by a plurality of springs which are closely interconnected in rows.
These springs may be helical springs of the waisted or so-called hourglass type, but other types of springs rnay be used as appropriate.
X separating layer or sheet may be of any suitable material but preferably comprises interwoven webbing strips fixed, for example stapled, at their ends to the side members of the frame and covered by a sheet of hessian or the like which is also fixed to the side members. Alternatively, the separating layer or sheet may be constituted by the underside of a cover enveloping the upper spring unit.
In accordance with the invention, the divan base itself may be foldable or the above-defined base may form one sub-unit of a foldable sprung divan base comprising two or more such sub-units hinged together. Furthermore, bases of the present invention may be arranged for linking together so that, for example, two single-bed-sized bases can be used with a double-bedsized mattress or two single divan beds can be joined to form a double bed.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is partially cut-away and partially-sectioned side view of a sprung divan base according to one embodiment of the invention.
A sprung divan base, generally indicated 1, comprises a rigid rectangular frame 2 comprising opposing side members or panels 3 of wood or composite material and a plurality of cross members 4 which extend between the lower edges of two opposing side panels 3. The cross members 4 support respective rows of helical lower springs 5 of the so-called hourglass type, which constitute lower springing means of the base 1. The tops of the springs 5 lie in the plane of the upper edges of the side panels 3.
The tops of the springs 5 are covered by interwoven webbing strips 6 which are stapled at their ends to the upper edges of the side panels 3 and are themselves covered by a sheet 7 of hessian, also stapled to the upper edges of the panels 3. The same staples may be used for the strips 6 and the sheet 7.
An upper spring unit 8, comprising an assembly constituted by a plurality of hourglass-type helical springs 9 which are closely interconnected in rows, is superposed on the frame 2 and attached, for example by staples 10, to the upper edges of the side panels 3.
The webbing strips 6 and hessian sheet 7 form a separating layer between the upper spring unit 8 and the tops of the springs 5 of the lower springing means.
The individual springs 9 of the spring unit 8 may interconnected by helical wires 11.
The top of the spring unit 8 is padded with a layer 12 of foam and cotton felt and the whole base 1 is upholstered in a conventional manner with a suitable decorative cover 13.
The base 1 may be provided with castors 14 or legs.
Typically, the lower part of the base 1, constituted by the frame 2 with its enclosed springs 5, has a depth of about 150 mm, while the upper part of the base, constituted by the upper spring unit 8 and the top padding 12, has a depth of about 125 mm.
The lower part of the base l functions in the manner of a conventional firm-edge divan base to provide firm ~ ppGr. while the spring unit 8 or upper part of the base 1 acts like a conventional sprung-edge divan to provide additional springiness or cushioning.
