Abstract

A device for controlling the operation of an extractor fan serving in use to remove to atmosphere cooking smells and moisture resulting from the operation of a gas cooker, the device being adapted to control a circuit supplying current to the fan motor, the device, in use, closing the circuit when the gas flow rate to the cooker falls below that level. The device comprises a float valve, the polypropylene float 7 of which interrupts the light path between a sensor 8 and lamp 9. <IMAGE>

Description

Title: Device for controlling the operation of an extractor fan The present invention relates to a device for controlling the operation of an extractor fan serving, in use, to remove to atmosphere cooking smells and moisture resulting from the operation of a gas cooker.
According to the present invention we provide a device for controlling the operation of an extractor fan serving in use to remove to atmosphere cooking smells and moisture resulting from the operation of a gas cooker, the device being adapted to control a circuit supplying current to the fan motor, the device, in use, closing the circuit when the gas flow rate to the appliance exceeds a certain level and opening the circuit when the gas flow rate to the cooker falls below that level.
An embodiment of the invention will now be particularly described with reference to the drawing showing a side view in section of the device.
Referring to the drawing the device comprises a perspex block 1 which in use is arranged with its longer axis vertical.
A bore 2 extends vertically through the block 1 and is provided at its lowermost end with an internally threaded portion 3 for connection to a gas supply pipe (not shown).
The uppermost end of the bore 2 is also provided with an internally threaded portion 4 for connection to the cooker supply pipe (not shown). In use therefore the block 1 is located intermediate the main gas and cooker supply pipes with gas passing between these pipes by way of the bore 2.
An intermediate portion 5 of the bore 2 adjoins the bore portions 3 and 4 and tapers radially inwardly from the uppermost bore portion 4 to the lowermost bore portion 3, the diameter of the portion 5 exceeding that of the bore portions 4 at the uppermost end of the bore portion 5 but being less than that of the bore portion 3 at the lowermost end of the bore portion 5.
Located within the intermediate portion 5 of the bore 2 is an elongated polypropylene float 6 similar in concept of that used in rotameters.
The head 7 of the float 6 is so dimensioned that at rest with no or at any rate a low gas flow the float 6 assumes the position shown in outline. Otherwise the float will rise if gas is flowing through the bore to a position such as that shown in full line.
Located vertically just above the head 7 of the float 6 on opposite sides of the bore 2 are respectively a light emitter 8 and a light sensor 9. The light emitter 8 transmits a light beam across the bore 2, the presence of the beam being detected by the sensor 9. The emitter and sensor are linked to the electrical circuit of the extractor fan (not shown) in such a way that the circuit is closed when the beam is broken but otherwise the circuit is open.
The beam is broken when the float 6'rises sufficiently for its head 7 to be interposed between the emitter and the sensor as is shown in the drawing.
In use when the occupant turns on the cooker the float rises when the gas flow rate exceeds a certain level. When the head of the float breaks the light beam the extractor fan is switched on and remains on at all times whilst the beam is broken. Thus the extractor fan will be operating while gas is lit and combustion fumes and cooking smells and moisture are being produced.
The circuit may include a delay means serving to maintain the circuit closed for a preset period after the appliance has been turned off so that the fan runs for a period after the appliance has been turned off.
This will enable the extractor fan to remove all the residual smells remaining at the instant the appliance is turned off.

Claims (2)
