Abstract
A package incorporating at least one container having an outwardly extending flange (f) at the top thereof includes a top panel (10) overlying the top of each container and securing strips (12, 14) hinged to opposed longitudinal side edges of the top panel (10) and secured to the undersides of adjacent container flanges so that at least portions of said flanges are interposed between portions of the top panel (10) and the securing strips (12, 14). Side panels (16, 18) are hinged to the securing strips (12, 14) and extend downwardly to cover portions of the exposed side walls of each adjacent container. Each securing strip (12, 14) is secured to the container flanges only at areas (S1) which are adapted to delaminate when the package is opened and the securing strips are detached from the container flanges. <IMAGE>
Description
MULTIPACK AND BLANK FOR FLANGED CONTAINERS
This invention relates to a packaging blank and tc a package incorporating at least one, ana more usually, a group of flanged containers in which the blank is adapted to be readily removed from the or each container thereby providing an easy opening feature for the package.
Our co-pending European Patent ApplicGtion No 873C2249.5 discloses an ultrasonic heatsealing process and appar- atus for securing a similar blank to one or G group of containers and also discloses a package of a type similar to the package of this invention. This prior package incorporates at least one container having side and end walls and outwardly projecting flanges at the top thereof. The package comprises a top panel overlying the top of the container and securing strips hinged to opposed longitudinal side edges of the top panel and also secured to the undersides of adjacent container flanges so that at least portions cf the flanges are interposed between portions of the top panel. S,ae panels are hinged to the securing strips and extend downwardly to cover a portion of the exposed side walls of the container.
The package is formed such that a blank of paperboard or similar foldable sheet material is secured to the top of a container made from thermoplastic material and which has opposed outwardly projecting flanges at the top thereof.
First, the blank is applied to the top of the containers so that the top panel covers the top of the container and the securing strips extend beyond the flanges thereof. The securing strips are folded into contact with the undersides of the flanges so that at least portions of the flanges are interposed between portions of the top panel and the securing strips te form overlapped side edge portions.
Thereafter, pressure is applied to the overlapped side edge portions and simultaneously the portions are subejected to ultrasonic energy whereby the interior surfaces of the securing strips are welded to the under slides of the container flanges so that usually a continuous weld is formed ali along each side of the pack- age.
whereas this package is satisfactory, it has proved somewhat difficult to remove the paperboard from the plastics containers in an easy and neat manner.
The present invention seeks to achieve these objectives by providing a package in which the heatsealed paperhoard is readily removed in opening the package in such Hiy that unsightly torn areas of paperboard are not ncticably visible.
One aspect of the invention provides a package incorporating at least one container having an outwardly extending flange at the top thereof, the package comprising a top panel overlying the top of each container, securing strips hinged to opposed longitidinal side edges of the top panel and secured to the undersides of adjacent container flanges so that at least portions of said flanges are interposed between portions of said top panel and said securing strips, and side panel means hinged to said securing strips and extending downwardly to cover at least portions of the exposed side walls of each adjacent container, characterised in that said securing strip is secured to said container flanges only at areas which are adapted to delaminate when the package is opened and the securing strips are detached from said container flanges.
Another aspect of the invention provides a blank for forming a package as defined in the immediately preceding paragraph which blank comprises a top panel and side panel means hinged to opposite side edges of the top panel by integral panel strips, characterised in that the hinged connection between the top panel and each of said integral panel strips comprises alternate lines of cut and lines of fold along the length of the blank and in that the hinged connection between each of said integral panel strips and adjacent side panel means comprising a continuous line of cut along the length of the blank whereby areas of said integral panel strips disposed between the continuous line of cut and the alternate lines of cut are thereby adapted to delaminate.
A emoodiment of the invention will ncH be described, by way of example, with preference to the accompanyIng drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view of a paperboard blank according te one aspect of the invention;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of a package incorporating the blank of Figure 1 and a plurality of flanged thermoplastic containers; and
FIGURES 3 and 4 are perspective views of part of the whole package illustrating the removal of the paperboard blank from the thermoplastic containers.
preferring first to Figure 1, an elongate blank B formed from paperboard or similar foldable sheet material comprises a top panel 10 to each longitudinal edge of wIch is hinged securing strips 12 and 14 resoecti vely and side wall panels 16 and 18 hinged to respective ones of the securing strips 12 and 14.
The connection between the top panel 10 and the secur ing strip 12 comprises alternate lines of cut 2G and fold lines 22 in which the fold lines are somewhat out cf f register longitudinally with the lines of cut 20.
Tfte connection between the securing strip 12 and side wail panel 16 is a continuous line of cut 24. Both the continuous line of cut and the shorter cut lines 20 are formed by incisions into the paperboard material to a depth of 50%-75% of its total thickness. The shaded areas 51 defined between the continuous cut line 24 and the shorter lines of cut 20 are locations at which the securing strip is secured to the underside of a container flange, preferably although not necessarily by means of ultrasonic heatsealing as earlier referred to.
The areas between each shaded area S1, although in overlapping abutment with portions of the flanges ce adjacent containers are not secured to those flanges.
Likewise, top panel 10 is connected to securing strip 14 by alternate lines of cut 26 and fold lines 28 and securing strip 14 is secured to sidewall panel 18 -by a continous line of cut 30.
The blank may be applied to a group of flanged thermoplastics containers or a single container and secured to the undersides of the container flanges by a number of means, but the preferred method is by the ultrasonic heatsealing means earlier described and disclosed in
European Patent Application No 87302249.5. However, in the present invention, the heatsealing is intermittent in that only the shaded areas 51 are secured to the container flanges. In order to achieve this, the series cf counterpart blocks 52 as best seen in Figures 2 and 4 cf EPA 87302249.5 are modified so that alternate counterpart blocks are devoid of their transverse ridges so that insufficient ultrasonic energy is created at those locations to create heatsealing.
A completed package P incorporating a blank 10 and a group of six thermoplastics containers is shown in
Figure 2.
Referring now to Figures 3 and 4, in order to remove the paperboard blank from the container group 'G', one sidewall e.g. sidewall 16 is grasped and pulled upwardly (Figure 3) whereby the paperboard in the secured areas 51 between parallel lines of cut, delaminates thereby destroying the bond between the securing strip 12 and the container flanges Thus, only small delaminated paperboard areas 52 are left attached to the container flanges. Delamination stops at the continuous linO of cut 24. The sidewall 16, partdela- minuted securing strip 12 and top panel 10 are then together lifted over the container tops and then pulling downwardly on that side of the package where securing strip 14 is still attached to the undersides of the container flanges along the secured areas 51.
Again, delamination at the secured areas 51 occurs so that delaminated areas 53 are left attached to the container flanges and the paperboard removed virtually intact save for the part-delaminated securing strips.
