Abstract
A sink or like closure plug is connected by a chain to the overflow fitting, and the parts have a projection and recess 10, 12 so that the plug can be located and supported on the overflow fitting. This has the added advantage of closing the overflow at times when the main outlet is open. <IMAGE>
Description
WASTE OUTLET AND PLUG
This invention relates to waste outlets for appliances such as sinks, baths, basins and the like of the kind provided with a plug which is manually displaced between one position, when the bath or like is to be filled, and a second position when it is to be emptied.
In a common form, the plug is attached to a chain which is fixed to a convenient point on the appliance, and often the point is provided on or adjacent to an overflow fitting. The latter is at a higher level than the waste outlet and is connected by a passage to the main waste outlet, often below the waste trap, so that if the overflow comes into use because the plug has been left in the main waste outlet and a tap has been left running, the overflow can safely discharge the water.
Such overflow outlets may however permit drain smells to reach the interior of the room in which the appliance is located because the trap is bypassed. A sometimes separately problem is that of providing a location for the plug when not in effective use, to prevent it falling back into the water and being drawn into the outlet so preventing the intended emptying of the appliance. The object of the invention is to solve both of these problems at the same time.
In accordance with the invention, a waste outlet of the kind referred to has the overflow fitting and the plug adapted to be mutually engageable in a manner which locates and supports the plug at times when the main waste is to be open, and in a manner which substantially closes the overflow outlet.
Hence, the plug is to be manually movable between the position in the main outlet when the overflow is open, and the position adjacent the overflow when the main outlet is open. In other words, the same plug is used to either close the main outlet or to close the overflow.
The plug may fit into an aperture in the overflow in generally similar way to that used in the main outlet, or alternatively, and according to a feature of the invention, the plug may have a flexible skirt portion and the overflow may have a.
tubular projection dimensioned so that the plug fits about that tubular projection to close the overflow opening. However the plug may merely fit close to the overflow outlet without engaging in or outside the outlet.
Preferably the plug is to be retained adjacent to the overflow by means of a socket or blind bore in the plug and a generally complementary post or projection on the overflow fitting.
Where the plug is anchored to a chain, and the chain is anchored to the overflow fitting, the chain may extend from the central post or projection on the overflow fitting, in which case it passes between the skirt of the plug and the overflow fitting at one point in extending from the post to the plug. Nevertheless it is thought possible to get a sufficiently close fit between the plug and overflow fitting for the purpose of substantially preventing drain smells passing through the overflow. Alternatively however the chain can be attached at the side of the overflow fitting so that a more close and complete fit can be obtained.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section showing an overflow fitting with a central projecting post 12 with a complementary recess 10 in the underside of the plug. The chain extends from the plug to the projection 12 and passes between the fitting and plug when the post 12 is engaged in the bore 10 and the plug generally closes the overflow outlet.
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation of an alternative plug having a similar bore 10 extending into a central web-like part 14 which extends diametrically of the plug as seen in the plan view of Figure 3 and the transverse section of Figure 4, this being to enable the plug to be manually inserted in the waste outlet or removed therefrom and pushed onto the overflow fitting, without the two being connected by a chain.
Figure 5 is a sectional elevation of another version in which a loop handle 16 is pivoted to the plug to facilitate its manipulation, and again a central bore 10 is used for engagement with the overflow fitting.
Claims (6)
1. An overflow fitting for use in association with a waste outlet for a sink or like appliance, said waste outlet having a manually moved plug for closure, in which the overflow fitting and the plug are adapted to be mutually engageable in a manner which locates and supports the plug at times when the said waste outlet is to be open, and in a manner which substantially closes the overflow outlet.
2. A waste outlet as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the plug is arranged to fit into an aperture in the overflow fitting.
3. A waste outlet as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the plug has a flexible skirt and the overflow has a tubular projection dimensioned so that the skirt fits about that tubular projection.
4. A waste outlet as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the plug is retained adjacent to the overflow fitting by means of a socket or blind bore and a generally complementary post or projection.
5. A waste outlet as claimed in any preceding claim where the plug is anchored to a chain, and the chain is anchored to the overflow fitting, and where the chain extends from a central post or projection on the overflow fitting.
6. A waste outlet substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
