Abstract

A windscreen wiper blade comprises a rigid support member 1 having a channel 2 of generally T-shaped cross-section with a flared opening formed by rounded parts 8 and a flexible wiper element 4 mounted in said channel and provided with protuberances 10 on the sides thereof, the arrangement being such that in use the protuberances abut the rounded parts when the wiper element is flexed. A steel strip 5 for imparting a retension to the wiper blade may be located in the channel. The support member may be retained in the wiper blade assembly by clips 6. Improved cleaning is said to result even under unfavourable conditions. <IMAGE>

Description

Wiper blade for windscreen wiper installations The invention relates to a wiper blade for windscreen wiper installations, having a basic support element consisting of relatively non-resilient material which has an open channel of generally T-shaped crosssection continuous along its longitudinal extension to receive the foot region of a soft squeegee, likewise generally T-shaped in cross-section, which squeegee has protuberances projecting on both sides of the base bar of the 'T', by which it is braced against stop surfaces of the basic element during the reciprocating pivotal movements of the wiper blade.
A wiper blade of this type is already to be taken as German Offenlegungschrift known from 2,344,876. However the bracing of the relatively soft squeegee shown there is not sufficient to prevent smearing occurring on the windscreen surface to be wiped under all service conditions.
It was therefore the object of the present invention to develop further a generic wiper blade so that satisfactory windscreen cleaning occurs even under unfavorable conditions.
According to the present invention there is provided a wiper blade for windscreen wiper installations, having a basic support element consisting of relatively nonresilient material which has an open channel of generally T-shaped cross-section continuous along its longitudinal extension to receive the foot region of a soft squeegee, likewise generally T-shaped in cross-section, which squeegee has protuberances projecting on both sides of the base bar of the 'T', by which it is braced against stop surfaces of the basic element during the reciprocating pivotal movements of the wiper blade, wherein the boundary surfaces of the channel recede arcuately towards its open orifice region and terminate in rounded foot parts against which sides of the protuberances are positively braced alternately depending upon the pivotal direction, whilst the form of the boundary surfaces of the channel and the form of the squeegee are mutually coordinated, so that the squeegee abuts the boundary surfaces and the foot parts as positively as possible in both pivotal positions.
As an advantageous development of the invention, the bracing of the squeegee can be further improved in that the base bar of the 'T' of the squeegee extends within the channel to at least half of its height.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described more fully below with reference to the drawing, in which: Fig. 1 shows a cross-section through a wiper blade in its central position, and Fig. 2 shows a view corresponding to Fig. 1, but with the wiper blade moved in the direction of the arrow p S The wiper blade illustrated in the drawing has a basic element 1, which preferably consists of a hard PVC extruded profile. A channel 2 of generally T-shaped cross-section, open downwards in the drawing, is provided in the basic element 1, and serves to receive the foot part 3 of a squeegee 4, likewise of T-shaped crosssection, which preferably consists of an elastomer extruded profile. To permit the wiper blade to be given a desirable pretension, a steel strip inlay 5 is provided between the foot part 3 of the squeegee 4 and the floor of the channel 2.
The basic element 1 of the wiper blade is retained by metal clips 6 in a customary manner.
The lateral boundary surfaces 7 of the channel 2 recede arcuately towards its open orifice region and terminate in rounded foot parts 8. During the pivoting of the wiper blade - as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing - the associated side of the base bar 9 of the 'T' of the squeegee 4 in each case abuts the receding boundary surfaces 7, whereas the top side of a respectively associated protuberance 10 projecting from the base bar 9 of the 'T' is braced against the underside of the foot part 8.
The above described regions of basic element 1 and squeegee 4 are shaped in such a way that as laminar a mutual contact of the parts as possible occurs during pivoting.
As an advantageous development of the invention, the basic element may exhibit local recesses (perforations) not shown in the drawing, in its longitudinal extension, whereby the guidance of the squeegee is further improved.

Claims
1. Wiper blade for windscreen wiper installations, having a basic element consisting of relatively nonresilient material which has an open channel' of generally T-shaped cross-section continuous along its longitudinal extension to receive the foot region of a soft squeegee, likewise generally T-shaped in cross-section, which squeegee has protuberances projecting on both sides of the base bar of the 'T', by which it is braced against stop surfaces of the basic element during the reciprocating pivotal movements of the wiper blade, wherein the boundary surfaces of the channel recede arcuately towards its open orifice region and terminate in rounded foot parts against which sides of the protuberances are positively braced alternately depending upon the pivotal direction, whilst the form of the boundary surfaces of the channel and the form of the squeegee are mutually coordinated, so that the squeegee abuts the boundary surfaces and the foot parts as positively as possible in both pivotal positions.
2. Wiper blade according to Claim 1, wherein the base bar of the 'T' of the squeegee extends within the channel to at least half its height.
3. Wiper blade according to one or more of the previous Claims, wherein the basic element has local recesses or perforations in its longitudinal extension in the region of the boundary surfaces of the channel.
