Abstract

220,187. Linden, L. Oct. 1, 1923. Sewage and sludge treating furnaces.-Sewage or other refuse is dried and incinerated in a chamber 1 provided with a number of rows of tiltable trays 3 supporting the material so that this is dried by the combustion gases from the grate 2 passing upwards in a sinuous manner. The trays are tilted at intervals to cause the refuse to descend from row to row until it finally reaches the grate. The outermost trays of the lowest row may swing outwards to deposit some of the dried refuse in spaces 19 whence it may be withdrawn from the chamber so as to be mixed with wet refuse say in fixed or invertible vessels 13 fitted with agitators 14 and supplied with hot air or gas. Water heaters may be disposed in the chamber as shown at 17, 18 and air may be admitted at 16. Deodorizing fluids &c. may be introduced into the chamber or chimnev and waste heat from adjoining plant may be utilized to the admission chamber.
