Abstract

220,158. Lake, V. F. Aug. 1, 1923. Splitting.-Blocks of slate supported by balls 4 on a base 2 of adjustable width are split by means of a blade 14 urged forwards with its holder 15 by weights 34 in a carrier 35 whilst being struck by a rotating hammer 23, the distance between the hammer and the shank 6<a> depending on the pressure between the slate and the blade, so that the shank is not struck by the hammer when no resistance is encountered. The forward edge of the blade is divided horizontally and is guided between plates 114 connected by a linkage 116; the bottom edge of the blade is guided in a slot in the base. The advance of the holder 15 is controlled by arms 43, 45 and a crank 39 on a rotating shaft 40, and as the weight carrier 35 descends, the topmost weight is lift.ed off by spring stops 54, being replaced when the carrier is raised again. Clamps 109 comprising pairs of arms mounted on vertical rods are provided for both ends of the block, and are opened and closed in accordance with the advance of the tool holder by means of cams 71, 72 on the shaft 40 and weighted levers 73; this motion may be put out of action by a hand lever. A stop-gear for arresting the forward motion when desired comprises a piston 59 attached to the tool carriage in working in fluid circuit 61. A valve 66 in the circuit can be closed by a treadle 70 and link 69. In a modified machine for splitting thin slabs, the balls 4 are omitted, and springs are inserted in the guide slot in the base.
