Abstract

The force-pressure sensor is of a robust construction to withstand adverse weather conditions and other harsh environments, and provides a proportional electrical output when a force or pressure is allied to it. The sensor comprises a piezoelectric cable element 16 sandwiched between two pieces of metal which as shown are in the form of an aluminium channel 11 and a bar or plate 13. All are held together by elastomer filling the space within the channel and between end blocks 12, 14. The block 12 carries a connector 15 transmitting the output of the piezoelectric cable 16. <IMAGE>

Description

FORCE-PRESSURE SENSOR This invention relates to sensors for the purpose of detecting the presence of any physical body or object that may be directly or indirectly in contact with it.
The sensor is relatively small and inexpensive in comparison with alternative sensing devices and will detect a change of state when subjected to force or pressure. The sensor has a linear electrical output, is of a very simple construction, will withstand adverse weather conditions and other harsh environments.
The sensor itself functions as a pressure sensor, and enables the sensor to detect the presence of pressure, force or weight. The sensor comprises of a piezoelectric element, inserted between two pieces of material, metal or non-metal, which are held together by a bonding material with elastic properties. The sensor's electrical output is then amplified and processed to a desired output.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of an example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which figure lshows a perspective component diagram of a sensor.
Referring to the drawing in Fig. 1 the sensor comprises of a piezoelectric element 16, e.g. in cable form, inserted between two pieces of material, the U-channel 11 and the bar 13, for example aluminium. The end blocks 12 and 14 are fixed in the U-channel 11 by screws 19, or rivets or other fixing methods, and are used to secure the piezoelectric element (in this example a cable) in its correct position, such that-it is straight and remains in contact with both the base of the bar 13 and the U-channel 11. Block 12 has a connector 15 to enable the electrical signal to be accessed. The remaining space confined by 11,12,13 and 14 is filled with an elastomer.
