Bleaching, processes for; agitating materials and liquids together; reagents, adding to treating liquors in measured and regulated quantities.-In a continuous process for the bleaching of cellulose pulp for the manufacture of paper, the pulp is passed through a series of vessels, to the first of which a solution of hypochlorite is supplied, the acid being introduced into a vessel later in the series to the last vessels of the series water is supplied for the purpose of washing the pulp. In the plant shown, the pulp is introduced into a series of vessels 1 - - 5 through a drum 7 in which a proportion of the water is removed; each vessel of the series is provided with a central partition 8 and with a paddle 10 working in conjunction with a raised portion 9 on the base of the vessel, by which means the pulp and liquid is maintained in circulation and by means of a channel 11 placed at the upper part of the incline a portion of the liquid &c. is delivered to the next vessel of the series; vessels 1, 2 are provided with distributors 12, 13 driven in unison with the paddles and through the first of which a solution of hypochlorite is supplied and through the second acid to effect the bleaching which is completed in the vessel 3. Water for washing is supplied through a distributor 14 to the vessel 5, the last of the series, and passes in a direction contrary to the flow of the pulp through drums 17. 18, finally being discharged through a pipe 15.
