Abstract

There is disclosed a protective sock for a limb of an animal comprising a boot-shaped bag of water impermeable material having means for constricting its open upper end to fit firmly around a limb to which the sock is applied. <IMAGE>

Description

PROTECTIVE SOCK This invention concerns a protective sock for a limb of an animal such as a pet dog or cat for example, enabling the animal to indulge in normal outdoor activities without wetting, soiling or damaging a wound dressing on said limb.
Pet animals, especially dogs, occasionally injure one or more limbs as a result of a fight with another animal, entanglement with barbed wi; ? or any one of numerous other causes and such injuries often require the application of a wound dressing to ensure proper and speedy healing. Such pet animals habitually leave the house for exercise and toilet purposes. To deny such egress to a pet wearing a wound dressing causes frustration to the pet and also its owner, yet to allow the animal outis likely to spoil the dressing.
According to the present invention there is provided a protective sock for a limb of animal comprising a boot-shaped bag of water impermeable material having means for constricting its open upper end to fit firmly around a limb to which the sock is applied.
The sock may be provided in a variety of sizes to suit the limbs of different sized animals.
The constricting means may be comprised by a drawstring or an elasticated cord threaded through perforations in the plastics material.
The impermeable material may be of plastics material which may be transparent enabling the user to confirm that positioning of the sock does not disturb the dressing it is designed to protect.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description, with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing, which shows, by way of example only, a side elevation of one form of protective sock embodying same.
Referring now to the drawing, it will be seen that the protective sock 10 comprises an elongated bag 11 having an outwardly twined portion 12 at its lower end to give a book-like shape and an open top 13. The bag 11 (which may be provided in a variety of sizes to suit differently sized animals) is shaped to fit over a limb with the portion 12 accommodating the paw of the limb.
The bag 11 is formed from a water impermeable plastics material by moulding or preferably in the interests of economy by thermally welding two sheets of appropriate shape around their edges. The plastics material is preferably transparent enabling the user to ensure that fitting of the sock does not disturb the wound dressing on the limb which is to be protected.
The sock is secured by constricting its open upper end firmly to engage the limb to prevent slipping. This may be done by means of a draw cord 14 threaded through apertures 15 around the upper edge of the sock. The draw cord 14 should not be excessively tightened before being tied.
The sock should be removed from the animal as soon as it returns from the outside.
The socks should be disposable in the interests of hygeine.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof as defined by the appended claims.
Thus, for example, the draw cord 14 may be replaced by an elastic loop avoiding the necessity of tying and ensuring that the top of the sock cannot be excessively tightened or by a plastic strip welded to the top of the sock.

Claims (4)
