Abstract

Apparatus for removing odours from a flush toilet, comprising ducting 7 connected at one end into the flush pipe 5 connecting the water cistern 3 to the toilet bowl 1, and opening at the other end at a point removed from the flush toilet. Odours in the toilet bowl 1 are drawn away through the ducting 7. An extractor fan 9 may be provided in the ducting 7. The ducting 7 may be tapped into an overflow pipe 11 of the water cistern 3 to enable odours be to vented outside the building housing the flush toilet. <IMAGE>

Description

DESCRIPTION APPARATUS FOR EXTRACTING ODOURS FROZE A FLUSH TOILET Mle present invention relates to apparatus for extracting odours from a flush toilet.
It is well know to mount extractor fans within an outside wall of a toilet cubicle to remove unpleasant odours. However, wllilst such devices are effective at removing odours circulating within the toilet cubicle they do not prevent odours rising from the toilet bol or trough.
Is is an object of the present invention to provide apparatus for removing odours from within a flush toilet.
According to the present invention there is provided apparatus for removing odours from within a flush toilet comprising ducting adapted in use to be situated lçith one end opening to the exterior of an ourside wall of the toilet cubicle and the other end connected into the water flush pipe leading fron the water cistern to the flush toilet.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention an extractor fan is mounted in the ducting towards the end opening to the exterior of the toilet cubicle. The extractor fan may be nains or battery powered.
Conveniently, where an extractor fan is provided in the ducting, the end of the ducting opening to the exterior of the toilet cubicle may be tapped into an overflow pipe of the water cistern. In this arrangement a T-piece can be provided in the overflow pipe and the outlet side of the-extractor fan can be tapped into it.
It will be appreciated that this arrangement ensures constant removal of odours eminating within the toilet bowl and yet ensures that there is no risk of water leaking from the ducts carrying the fumes away.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig 1 shows a schemmatic view of apparatus for extracting odours from a flush toilet in accordance with a first aspect of the present invention.
FiS 2 sh6ws a schemmatic view of apparatus for extracting odours from a flush toilet in accordance with a second aspect of the present invention.
Referring to Fig 1 of the accompanying dralNrings there is siiorn a conventional flush toilet comprising a toilet bowl 1, a waste pipe 2 and a water cistern 3 connected to the rim i of the toilet bowl 1 by means of flush pipe 5. Operation of the toilet is quite conventional.
The :nodificatioiiinaccordance with the present invention involves the insertion of a tap or T-piece 6 in the flush pipe 5 leading from the water cistern 3 to the rim 4 of the toilet bowl 1. To the tap 6 is connected an Lshaped pipe or duct 7 which leads through the outside wall 8 of the toilet cubicle and up the side of it.
It trill be readily apparent that the duct 7 operates in much the same way as a chimney so that unpleasant odours eminating within the toilet bowl will be drawn into the duct 7 away to the outside of the toilet cubicle. In this embodiment of the present invention no powered extraction of odours is provided.
However, -where the external open mouth of the duct 7 can not be sited in a favourable position, that is whereever there is a reasonable flolf of air past it to draw odours through the duct.7, an extractor fan can be situated in the duct 7 as in the embodiment of the present invention shown in Fig 2.
Referring now to Fig 2-of the accompanying drawings there is shown a conventional flush toilet indentical to that of Fig 1. A duct 7 is tapped into the rear of the flush pipe 5 by means of a tap or T-piece (not shown).
However, instead of being taicen immediately through the outside tall 8 of the toilet cubicle the duct 7 is connected to a light duty extractor fan 9. The extractor fan 9 is positioned above the level of the water cistern 3 to prevent later running into it should the water cistern 3 overflow. The outlet side of the extractor fan 9 is connected by further ducting 10, and thence through a T-piece 11, into the overflow pipe 12 of the water cistern 3 tich passes through the outside wall 8.
To prevent odours from the duct 7 escaping into the later cistern 3 and out into the toilet cubicle, a U-bend- 13 is provided in the overflow pipe so as to provide a water trap or the end of the overflow pipe 11 within the water cistern 3 is run into the later within tile later cistern 3.
Of course, where wished for separate ducting can be used to connect the outlet side of the extractor fan 9 to atmosphere, instead of the overflow pipe 12.
In order to prevent water from accumulating within the duct 7 venting the toilet bowl to atmosphere, which could of itself be a source of unpleasant odours and a possible health hazard, the section of ducting connected into the rear of the flush pipe 5 is downwardly inclined towards the toilet bowl 1. Thus any water which collects in the duct 7 runs straight back into the toilet bowl 1.
