Abstract

A conventional animal collar is equipped with a number of resiliently mounted retro-reflective teeth arranged to improve the visibility of the animal to vehicle drivers at night time. A design for a cat collar is illustrated in Figure 1 which shows the plan view of such a collar that is manufactured by pressing out from sheet material. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO RETRO-REFLECTIVE ANIMAL COLLARS This invention concerns improvements relating to retro-reflective animal collars, as are popularly fitted to the necks of cats and dogs to make the animal visible to car drivers at night.
The usefulness of retro-reflective collars is not limited to household animals, and collars may be adapted for use on animals, such as sheep, horses, etc.
Existing retro-reflective collars consist of a normal collar that is finished on its outside with a layer of retro-reflective material. The retro-reflective material may also be treated such that it fluoresces in the dark. The retro-reflective material used is capable of reflecting light back in the vicinity of its source, and consequently will appear bright when viewed by the driver of a vehicle at night by reflecting the light from the car's headlamps back towards the driver, whose eyes would typically be positioned just above the headlamps.
Existing retro-reflective collars generally appear to be very similar to conventional collars, consisting of a continuous parallel strip of retro-reflective material designed to fit around the animals neck and secured with a buckle. Such collars are normally manufactured to a 'conventional' width - about lOmm for a cat - with the frequent problem that most or all of the collar is hidden behind the animal's fur or hair, which may be considerably longer than the width of the collar. To overcome this problem, it is possible to make the collar wider, but this often results in discomfort for the animal. Furthermore such a collar often remains invisible when the animal is viewed 'head-on', since the orientation of the reflective surface is virtually parallel to the line of vision.
According to the present invention, there is an animal collar which may or may not be covered in retro-reflective material, and which is equipped with a number of resiliently mounted retro-reflective 'teeth', the design and positioning of the said teeth being adjusted to obtain the desired characteristics of durability, comfort, visibility and aesthetic appeal.
By way of example, a specific embodiment of the invention relating to a cat collar will now bye described with reference to Figure 1, which shows a plan view of the collar when it is laid out flat, the reflective teeth being fitted to the rearward edge of the collar proper. For the sake of clarity, the buckle, D-ring and bell normally fitted to the collar are omitted in this drawing+ In this embodiment, the collar, complete with reflective teeth, is manufactured by pressing out in one piece from a combination of three laminated materials, namely a retro-reflective material (outermost), a PVC/cloth layer (central) for strength, and a soft felt inner layer which may or may not be used to carry an insecticide for the control of flea infestation. The form of the reflective teeth is such that, when the collar is fitted to a cat with average length fur, the teeth diverge out from the axis- of the fitted collar by approximately 300, thus greatly enhancing the-visibility of the collar from different viewing angles.
In another embodiment of the present invention, it may be con- - sidered most appropriate to provide the reflective teeth as radial protruberances. Such protruberances may be formed by injection-moulding the basic collar and teeth in one component from a soft plastic and then covering in a retro-reflective material as desired.
A further embodiment may incorporate features from both of the foregoing examples of Mmbodiment.

Claims (4)

1. An animal collar which may or may not be covered in retro reflective material and which is equipped with a number of resiliently mounted retro-ref-lective 'teeth', the design and positioning of the said teeth being determined by the desired characteristics of durability, comfort, visibility and aesthetic appeal.
2. A retro-reflective cat-collar as claimed in Claim 1 in which the retro-reflective teeth are provided on one or both edges of the collar.
3. A retro-reflective cat collar as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 in which the retro-reflective teeth are formed from the same piece of retro-reflective material as may be used to cover the remainder of the collar.
4. A retro-reflective cat collar substantially as described hcreiii wiLh reference to Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing.
