Abstract

A dismantleable chair consists of three, preferably sinuous, triangular members (1, 2, 3) slotting together to form in side elevation an A-shaped frame, the cross member of the "A" forming the seat either between the legs of the "A" or extending laterally to one or both sides of the "A". One or both leg members may be extended upwardly thus acting as a back-rest or rests for the seat(s). <IMAGE>

Description

CHAIR This invention relates to a novel and. artistic dismantleable chair construction, which is of a sculptured design or appearance, and which can be easily assembled or disassembled for transport and storage. The chair is particularly designed for outdoor use, but may, of course, be used indoors.
The chair basically consists of three, preferably triangular shaped, members, comprising a first, or seat, member having two spaced apart parallel slots therein, a second, elongated leg member which is shaped to pass through one of said slots in said first member and to interlock therewith, and a second, elongated leg member, which is shaped to pass through the other of said slots-in said first member and to interlock therewith, the two elongated leg members, in the assembled condition of the chair, being inclined to the vertical and meeting at an apex, thus giving the chair, in the side elevation, a generally A-shaped configuration, the cross-bar of the "A" being constituted by the seat member, and the two side strokes of the "A" being constituted by the two leg members.
The part of the chair constituting the normal seat may be between the two leg members, which thus meet at an apex located above the head of a person seated in the chair. Alternatively, or as well, the cross-bar of the "A" may be extended laterally in one or both directions, so that the normal "seat" of the chair is constituted by one, or both, extended ends of the cross-bar to one side or both sides of the "A", the upper pert of thc elongated leg member(s) thus acting as a back-rest.
For added aesthetic appeal, the three members may, and preferably are, of sinuous triangular configuration with one or more curves or bends along their length. Generally, the three members will be entirely planar, but again, this is not essential, and non-planar configurations can be employed without departing from the scope of the invention. In a particularly preferred configuration, one of the two leg members is longer than the other so that it extends upwardly beyond the apex of the "A". In yet another variation, the two leg members may be slotted one into the other and extended beyond the apex of the "A", in which case the two leg members form an "X" configuration, but of course, supporting a horizontal seat member slotted onto the two leg members.
The principle of construction underlying the concept of the present invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a general perspective view of a first and preferred embodiment; Figure 2 is a side elevation of a second embodiment; and Figures 3a, 3b and 3c are plan views of the three members which go to make up the second embodiment.
Referring to Figure 1, and as will be seen the chair consists of three interfitting members each of a sinuous, generally triangular configuration, and which fit together to form a chair which, in side view, has an A-shaped configuration, but with the cross-bar (1) of the "A" extending laterally beyond the two inclined side members (2, 3) to provide a seat portion (la).
The two inclined side or leg members (2, 3) are simply slotted through slots (4, 5) in the seat or cross-bar member (1), and meet at the apex of the "A".
At this point, the two members (2, 3) may be fastened, e.g. nailed, glued, or screwed together, but preferably simply rest one against the other, perhaps with a shoulder or other abutmemt on the one to stop relative sliding movement of the other. As will be seen, one (2) of the two side or leg members is elongated with respect to the other (3) and extends upwardly beyond the apex of the "A", that member forming an extended back rest for the chair.
The design and construction of the chair illustrated in the second embodiment is essentially the same, save that the two leg members (2, 3) and the seat member (1) are of a different less ornate triangular configuration. However, they fit together in exactly the same way to form the generally A-shaped chair design.
As will be apparent, the chair can be readily assembled by slotting the seat over the -two leg members which simply rest one against the other to form a self-supporting structure. The chair may be disassembled just as easily. The three structural members may be of wood, plastic or any other suitable material.
As aready indicated, numerous modifications may be made in the design of the chair, and in particular its aesthetic appearance, without departing from the concept and scope of the present invention.

Claims (9)

1. A dismantleable chair construction comprising a first, or seat, member having two spaced apart parallel slots threin, a second, elongated leg member which is shaped to pass through one of said slots in said first member and to interlock therewith, and a second, elongated leg member, which is shaped to pass through the other of said slots in said first member and to interlock therewith, the two elongated leg members, in the assembled condition ofthe chair, being inclined to the vertical and meeting at an apex, thus giving the chair, in the side elevation, a generally A-shaped configuration, the cross-bar of the "A" being constituted by the seat member, and the two side strokes of the "A" being constituted by the two leg members.
2. A chair construction according to claim 1, wherein the seat member is elongated laterally in one or both directions beyond the two leg members, the extended lateral end or ends of the seat member providing a seat or seats upon which a person may sit, and with the upwardly extending portion of one or both leg members above the level of the seat thus acting as a back-rest or rests for said seat(s).
3. A chair construction according to claim 1 or 2, wherein one of the two leg members extends upwardly beyond the apex of the "A".
4. A chair construction according to any one of claim 1-3, wherein one or more of the three structural members is of a triangular configuration.
5. A chair construction according to claim 4, wherein all three structural members are of a triangular configuration.
6. A chair construction according to any one of claims 1-3, wherein one or more of the three structural members is of a sinuous triangular configuration.
7. A chair construction according to claim 6, wherein all three structural members are of a sinuous, triangular configuration.
8. A chair construction according to any one of claims 1-7, wherein all three structural members are planar members.
9. A chair construction according to claim 1, constructed substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
