Abstract

A flue-box for a gas fire comprises a container provided with an opening in one side thereof for communication with an outlet for combustion products of the gas fire, a first roof section 5 having a cut-out portion 7 shaped to conform with the shape of a flexible liner for a chimney, a removable roof section 8 also having a cut-out portion 10 shaped to conform with the shape of the liner, means to secure the two sections together so that they engage with the liner. <IMAGE>

Description

FLUE -BOX This invention relates to a flue-box for use in relation to but not exclusively for a gas fire, Modernization of old buildings entails frequently i the replacement of fire grates used for the burning of solid fuels by gas fires. The replacement requires generally the construction of a flue-box which is located behind the gas fire, The box receives combustion products from the fire and then directs them up the chimney, The latter is normally required to be lined with a flexible corrosion resistant metal tube as a part of the modernization process. The metal liner is lowered into the chimney so that the lower end just enters the flue-box whilst the upper end is located so as to be in contact with the lower end of the gas cowl which is fixed to the top of the chimney.
Flue boxes are generally made of stone or brick measuring about 4 x X cms, Whilst they are relatively small they are nevertheless time-consuming and awkward to construct, This invention is directed to a prefabricated flue-box which can be made conveniently under factory conditions and installed quickly and easily.
Accordingly this invention provides a fluebox for a gas fire comprising a container provided with an opening in one side thereof communicating with an outlet for combustion products 9f a gas fire, a first roof section having a cut-out portion shaped to conform with the shape of a flexible liner for a chimney, a removable roof section also having a cut-out portion shaped to conform with the shape of the liner, means to secure the two sections together so that they engage with the liner, This invention is illustrated but not restricted by the following drawings in which Figure 1 is an exploded view taken in perspective of one preferred form of the flue-box.
Figure 2 is a front view showing schematically the flue-box depicted in Figure 1 installed ready for use.
Unless the text indicates to the contrary each numeral identifies the same feature, In these figures a flue-box shown generally as numeral (1) is provided with a back (2) and side walls (3 and 4).' The top of the box is provided with a fixed roof section (5) having a flanged edge (6) and a cut-out portion (7) in the shape of a semi circle, A removable roof section (8) is provided also with a flanged edge (9) and a semi circular cut-out portion (10). Flanged edges (6 and 9) are provided with bolt holes (11 and 12). Side walls (3 and 4) and roof section (8) are provided with screw holes (13 and 14). Flanges (15 and 16) incorporate screw holes (17 and 18). The flue-box can be made of any eesi-enand- flame rssistant construction material e.g. galvanised iron.
Referring to Figure (2) the front of the flue-box (1) is connected to a flexible tube (19) made of stainless steel having a diameter of 12. 5 cm which acts as a liner for chimney (22). The liner passes up through the chimney (22) into the chimney stack (20) just below the gas cowl (21), In drder to convert an old solid burning fireplace so as to utilise flue-box according to the present invention a recess (not shown) is made in the old fireplace which is just larger than flue-box (1), Cowl (20) is removed and liner (19) is lowered down the chimney until its lower end protrudes a short distance into the recess, Flue-box (1) is then inserted into the recess without the removable roof section (8) and the end of liner (19) is located in cut-out portion (7). The removable roof section (8) is then replaced so that the liner becomes completely encircled by- the two roof sections which are then secured together by insertion of bolts through holes (11 and 12). This has the effect of causing the two roof sections to grip the liner. The flue-box is then anchored within the recess by means of selftapping screws which are inserted through holes (17 and 18) into the shoulders of the wall forming the recess, The gas fire is then positioned in front of the flue box with its vent for combusted gas extending into the box.

Claims (5)

1. A flue-box for a gas fire comprising a container provided with an opening in one side thereof for communication with an outlet for combustion products of the gas fire, a first roof section having a cut-out portion shaped to conform with the shape of a flexible liner for a chimney, a removable roof section also having a cut-out portion shaped to conform with the shape of the liner1 means to secure the two sections together so that they engage with the liner.
2. A flue-box according to Claim 1 wherein the first roof section and the removable roof section are each provided with a flange and the two sections are made to engage round the liner by securing the flanges together.
3. A flue-box according to Claim 2 wherein the flanges are secured together by bolts,
4. A flue-box according to any one of the preceding claims wherein opposing side walls are provided with an apertured flange,
5. A flue-box according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the removable roof section is provided with a flange extending along the edge of the section opposed to the edge incorporating the cut-out portion, 6, A combination comprising a flue-box according to any one of the preceding claims and a flexible liner, 7. A flue-box as hereinbefore described with particular reference to the drawings,
