Abstract

An attachment assembly for attaching an elongate tubular elastic member 5 to an eye 19 of, for example, the pouch of a fishing catapult, has a connector 3 having an elongate part 5 connecting, two end parts 7 and 9. The connector is inserted into the eye 19 and bent around at the elongate part to bring flat faces 11 and 13 of the two end parts into contact to form a cylindrical plug, over which is stretched the end of the elastic member 5. <IMAGE>

Description

Attachment Device This invention relates to an attachment device, and more specifically to a device for attaching an elastic tubular member to another member.
In the assembly of catapults, e.g. as used by anglers, it has been the practice for the elastic elements which are formed by tubular members and which are connected between the handle and pouch of the catapult, to be fastened to the pouch by passing the tubular member through an eye in the pouch and then doubling the tube back on itself and securing the two overlapping parts of the tube with a tie. Conventionally the tie is a bundling strap having teeth on one surface and a slotted head having a tongue co-operating with the teeth.
This method of attachment is not ideal. The ties have been found to damage the tubing, which shortens the useful lifetime of the catapult. Also, the ties are awkward to fit which increases assembly costs.
The present invention aims to overcome these disadvantages and accordingly provides an attachment arrangement comprising a tubular elastic member, a further member having an eye, and a flexible connector connecting the tubular member to the further member, the connector extending through the eye and being bent around a medial portion so that the connector end portions abut one another to form a plug, the plug being received in the end of the tubular member and being gripped securely thereby.
Preferably, the connector comprises a unitary plastics member having semi-cylindrical end portions having abutment faces with locating means.
A better understanding of the invention may be gained from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof, in which reference is made to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a side view of a flexible connector showing the abutting position of the end portions in outline; Figure 2 is an end view; Figure 3 is an underneath view; and Figure 4 is a view of an elastic tube connected to a catapult pouch.
The embodiment illustrated in Figure 4 shows a pouch 1 of a catapult particularly intended for use by anglers for swimfeeding. The pouch 1 is connected through a connector 3 to one end of an elastic tube 5, the other end of which is connected to a catapult frame (not shown).
The pouch is attached to the frame by two such elastic tubes, conveniently made from latex, which allow the pouch to be drawn back from the frame by stretching the tubes and released so that bait in the pouch can be catapulted forwards due to the elasticity of the tubes.
Figures 1 - 3 illustrate the connector 3 in more detail, here shown in the flat form in which it is produced such as by injection moulding. The connector comprises a unitary plastics member having a waisted medial portion 6 and semi-cylindrical end portions 7 and 9. The end portions have abutment faces 11 and 13 for mutual abutment and one end carrier locating pins 15 which locate in corresponding recesses 17 in the other end when the end portions are brought together (illustrated in ghost outline in Figure 1). To connect the pouch 1 and tube 5 the connector 3 is passed through an eye 19 in the pouch and the end portions 7 and 9 are bent around on either side of the eye so that faces 11 and 13 abut one another and pins 15 locate in recesses 17. The connector ends in this position form a plug over which the elastic tube can be fitted. It is important that the plug diameter is large enough to cause the elastic tube to stretch over the plug to ensure a tight fit. Thus the diameter of the plug must be greater than the internal diameter of the tube.
A tight fit is helped by the natural resilience of the connector which tends to urge the connector ends outwardly against the tube. Such an arrangement ensures that the tube does not come off the plug when the tube is stretched axially prior to firing the catapult.
The embodiment described provides a more simple construction than the prior art described and does not damage the tube material and thus provides a longer useful lifetime. Although the connector has been described with reference to a catapult it will be clear to a person skilled in the art that it is not limited to a catapult, but can be used for many other applications.

CLAIMS:
1. An attachment assembly comprising a tubular elastic member, a further member having an eye, and a flexible connector connecting the tubular member to the further member, the connector extending through the eye and being bent around a medial portion so that the connector end portions abut one another to form a plug, and the plug being received in the end of the tubular security thereby.
2. An assembly according to claim 1, wherein the plug is substantially cylindrical.
3. An assembly according to claim 2, wherein the plug has a rounded free end.
4. An assembly according to claim 2 or 3, wherein the end portions are substantially semi-cylindrical.
5. An assembly according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the end portions have locating means on the abutting faces thereof to maintain the end portions in position relative to each other.
6. An assembly according to claim 5, wherein the locating means comprises a projection on one end portion and a recess in the other portion to receive projection.
7. An assembly according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the connector is a unitary plastics member, the end portions being interconnected by an intermediate portion of reduced cross-section relative to the end portions.
8. An assembly according to claim 1 and substantially as herein described.
9. A catapult incorporating an assembly as defined in any preceding claims, said further member being the catapult pouch.
