Description
TITLE : SEALING A PIPE JOINT
The present invention relates to sealing the interface between the adjoining portions of a pipe joint.
According to the present invention, there is provided a method for sealing the interface between the adjoining portions of a pipe joint, the method comprising injecting into the pipe an anaerobically curable monomer in fluid form, transporting the fluid to the site of the joint so that the monomer penetrates the joint interface and allowing the monomer to cure within the interface.
An embodiment of the invention will now be particularly described with reference to the drawings in which Figure 1 shows schematically the method being applied to the sealing of a screw threaded right angled pipe joint in a leaking gas service pipe and
Figure 2 shows an exploded view of the joint after sealing.
A typical joint la to be sealed (see exploded view) is formed in a branch offtake 2a from a lateral service pipe 3 in say a block of flats. There may be a similar joint lb in an adjoining offtake 2b.
The joint la comprises a right angled joint formed by a vertical portion 4 of the branch 2a immediately adjoining the main pipe 3 and an adjoining horizontal portion 5. The pipe portions 4 and 5 are connected by means of an elbow 6 which is internally threa#ded to receive the externally threaded ends 7,8 of the pipe branch portions 4 and 5 respectively in vertical and horizontal portions 9,10 of the elbow 6.
A leak may occur at the interface between the ends of portions 4,5 and the elbow portions 9,10. In order to seal any leak, an anaerobic sealant monomer in fog form is allowed to penetrate the interfaces by the method to be described.
The sealant is initially in liquid form which may contain the monomer and a catalyst. A suitable compound is manufactured by Chemence Ltd.
and comprises a mixture of the monomer based on (meth) acrylate esters (eg. Anacure 2793 (Yellow) ) and a catalyst (eg. Anacure Accelerator) based on a transition metal.
Before operations commence the flow of natural gas along the service pipe 3 is ceased so that no gas is flowing in the branch offtakes 2a and 2b.
An air mover 13 of known type is connected to that end 14 of the service pipe 3 distant from the offtakes 2, the air mover 13 providing means by which the liquid sealant can be dispersed to form a fog of droplets. The liquid sealant is fed to the air mover as a stream 15 together with a draught of induced air 16. The air 16 causes the liquid sealant to atomise to-a droplet fog 17.
A second draught of air 18 applied to the air mover 13 induces the necessary draught of air to cause the droplet fog 17 to be transported along the service pipe 3 to the offtake 2.
After a time it will be found that some of the sealant fog will have penetrated the interface between the pipe portions 4 and 5 and the elbow-6.
Since these interfaces are very confined when filled with sealant there is little if any air present so that the sealant monomer will polymerise very -quickly sealing any leaks in the interface after it sets as shown at 19 and 20 in Figure 2.
Where-the joint being sealed is provided in a live gas main, the transporter gas may be the existing gas supply.
While the sealing of the interface in a screw threaded type joint has been shown, it is possible to seal other types of joints such as flanged joints and bell and spigot type joints which are caulked
While the sealant described contains both a monomer and catalyst in admixture, it-would be possible to carry out the method in two stages in which in the first stage a catalyst present in a fog of a carrier such as a (meth) acrylate monomer is allowed to penetrate the joint interface and in the second stage the anaerobic composition as described previously is allowed to penetrate the interface.
Alternatively, the catalyst and the anaerobic composition may be simultaneously but separately injected into the pipe and transported to the site of the joint to penetrate the interface.
In another alternative the anaerobic composition may be injected into the pipe for transport to the site of the joint to penetrate the interface and then the catalyst may be injected into the pipe for similar transport to the site of the joint to penetrate the interface, the catalyst and anaerobic composition thereafter mixing in the interface to effect a cure.
