Abstract

A method of manufacturing tiles comprises feeding tile mould pallets (16) through a housing (14) of a tile forming station (12), which housing is supplied with tile-forming mix from a hopper and accommodates a rotating compacting rotor (22) upstream of a preforming and compacting roller (20) and a tile shaping extrusion blade (24) downstream of the compacting roller. The pallets (16) are fed from a magazine (34) and pushed in direction (18) by a reciprocating pusher plate (32). <IMAGE>

Description

Tile Manufacturing Machine This invention relates to a tile manufacturing machine, more especially for manufacturing roof tiles of concrete or like material by extrusion.
According to one aspect of the invention, a tile manufacturing machine comprises a tile forming station to which tile mould pallets are delivered and are filled with a tile forming mix, typically a concrete mix, the station including an extruding blade or blades below which the filled pallets are driven to shape one face of the tiles, and a preforming roller preceding the extruding blade and below which the pallets are c3riw'wn to compact the tile forming mix and preliminarily o shape the tiles prior to final shaping by the extruding blade or blades.
The machine preferably includes a compacting rotor preceding the preforming olzr, driven in rotation within a housing to which the tile-forming mix is delivered, to force the tile forming mix in the pallets under said roller.
A preferred machine is hydraulically powered, and includes an hydraulic drive for a reciprocating pusher plate which acts on the rear end of a line of pallets fed from a magazine to step the pallets forwardly into -the tile forming station. An hydraulic power unit supplying said hydraulic drive for the pusher plate preferably also supplies power to an hydraulic motor for driving the preforming roller and the compacting rotor. The same hydraulic power unit may conveniently and preferably does supply power to a guillotine for cutting the formed tiles in the pallets on the downstream side of the tile forming station.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided e method of manufacturing tiles which includes the steps of delivering tile forming mix into a mould pallet, and driving the pallet beneath a preforming roller, under which the Lile forming mix is forced to compact and prelimLilarily shape the mix in the pallets, prior to driving ths paLlet containing the preformed compacted mix beneath an extruding blade or blades.
A practical tile manufacturing machine in accordance with the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, whlch shows the machine diagrammatically in side elevation, partly cross sectioned to show relevant working parts.
The illustrated machine comprises a table 10 on which is supported a tile forming station generally referenced 12.
This station includes a housing 14 to which tile forming pallets 16 are delivered in the direction of flow indicated by the arrow 18. At an intermediate position along its length in the direction of flow, the housing 14 accommodates a preforming and compacting roller 20 drivable in rotation. Upstream of the roller 20 is a compacting rotor 22, also driven in rotation.
Tile-forming mix, typically a concrete mix, is fed from a hopper (not shown) into the top of the housing 14, thereby to fill the pallets which step forward through and along the bottom of the housing, passing beneath a restraining plate 24 near the housing entrance.
The combined action of tlie compacting'rotor 22 and compacting roller 20 is to force the filled pallets beneath the roller and compress the tile-forming mix therein under very high pressure, thereby to ensure the homogeneity and strength o the Einished tiles. Additionally the surface of the roller 20 is so formed as to impart a preliminary shaping to one face of the tiles. Any shaping required on the opposite face of the tiles is determined by the form of the top surface of the base os the pallets.
Immediately downstream of the roller 20, the housing 14 accommodates a top extrusion blade 24 under which the tiles are extruded with their finished shaping.
Side extrusion blades, not visible in the drawing, abut the top blade 24. The pallets carrying formed tile blocks therein then emerge from the housing and pass under a power driven guillotine 26 which cuts the individual tiles from the tile blocks.
The pallets 16 are stepped forward by the drive means shown at the right-hand side of the drawing. A carriage 28 beneath the table 10 is reciprocated back and forth on rollers 30 and is coupled to a pusher plate 32 above the table, which plate pushes forward the rear pallet of a line thereof proceeding towards the forming stationl2.
The empty pallets are delivered on to the end of the line from a magazine 34, a fresh pallet dropping into place each time the pusher plate 32 is retracted.
It is an important feature of the arrangement that the operational drives are all hydraulically powered. An hydraulic power unit 36 beneath the table is driven by a 7.5 HP motor 38 and, from the power unit, via speed regulators 4C, hydraulic lines 42 couple to a cylinder/ piston drive 44 for the carriage, to an hydraulic motor 46 for the compacting system 20, 22, and to the guillotine 26.
The hydraulic power unit is carried on a base structure 48 which also supports the table 10.
The above-described arrangement is by way of example only and may be modified in various ways within the scope of the invention hereinbefore defined.
