Abstract
The inventions relates to a process and an arrangement for executing the process of controlling the conveying of at least one continuous formed rod consisting in each case of a filling and a wrapping surrounding it, by means of a driven conveyor belt in a rod machine of the tobacco processing industry. The invention consists, depending on the speed of the conveyor belt or of the wrapped rod conveyed by it, in particular the wrapping thereof, in creating a measuring signal and in controlling the conveying speed of the conveyor belt according to the measuring signal. <IMAGE>
Description
Process and Arrangement for-Controlling
the Conveying of at least one Rod on a Rod
Machine of the Tobacco Processing Industry
The invention relates to a process for -^r.r^'' n ;;.c- o rsg ST continuously formed rod consisting of a filling and a wrapping surrounding said filling, by means of a driven conveyor belt of a rod machine of the tobacco processing industry.
The invention also relates to an arrangement for controlling the conveying of at least one continuously formed rod consisting of a filling and a wrapping surrounding said filling by means of a driven conveyor belt in a rod machine of the tobacco processing industry.
Rod machines as used in the tobacco processing industry, serve to wrap a rod of smokable material (e.g. rade of cut tobacco for the production ot cigarettes or lump tobacco for the production of cigars), or of filter material, continously with a wrapping strip (generally made of paper), to stick this and to cut continuous sections (cigarettes, cigars, filter rods) from the rod (cigarette rod, filter rod) manufactured in the continuous process.
Rod machines of the kind described above are also known, whereon a number and in particular two rods are formed at the same time, so that - by comparison with individual rod machines - with the same output the production speed is halved.
With the known rod machines, the rod-shaped filling (tobacco or filter material) is first formed and then united with the wrapping material in the form of a wrapping strip. For this the filling is laid over the paper strip, which is laid around the filling in a so-called format part. One edge of the strip is coated with adhesive and pressed on the periphery so that a so-called cigarette or filter rod results. The rod is conveyed by a so-called format belt, which is conducted and driven over a number of guide rollers. For multiple rod machines d multiplicity of these parts must naturally be present. As the format belts, mostly made of fabric, engage only with the wrapping of the rod, and then essentially frictionally, slippages may occur. In addition the format belts may stretch to varying degrees.Conditions which were originally uniform may also be worsened by wear of the format belts.
The object of the invention is a drive control of the conveyor belt and/or of the rod (with multiple rod machines of the conveyor belts and/or of the rods), wherein the disadvantageous effects on production caused by the phenomena described above are reduced or excluded.
The solution according to the invention consists therein that depending on the speed of the conveyor belt or of the wrapped rod conveyed by it, in particular the wrapping of said rod, a measuring signal is created, and in that the conveying speed of the conveying belt is controlled according to the measuring signal.
According to a preferred development of the invention, two or more rods can be transported by respective conveyor belts in rod machines. For this the speeds of the individual conveyor belts or rods can be measured and corresponding measuring signals created, by means of which the conveying speeds of the conveyor belts are controlled. The measuring signals obtained in this way can be used in a further embodiment of the invention, to control the conveyor belts independently of one another, preferably at pre-determined speeds.Here the speed-dependent measuring signal for a conveyor belt or a rod, or the speed-dependent measuring signals for a number of conveyor belts or rods may be compared with set value sigr.als, which are creat according to the speed of the machine; when a deviation in the signals occurs in at least one conveyor belt or rod, preferably in all conveyor belts or rods, the conveyor belt or belts can be controlled at speeds which correspond to the set value signals.
A further possibility for use of the speed-dependent signals in rod machines with a number of conveyor belts and rods consists according to a further embodiment of the invention therein that a speed-dependent rr,easurlng signal for a conveyor belt or a rod leads at least one further conveyor belt, i.e. controls it so that the speed of the further conveyor belt or rod or further conveyor belts or rods is adjusted to the speed of the leading conveying belt or rod.
The arrangement referred to at the outset is characterised in that at least one measured value receiver is provided for the speed of the conveyor belt or of the wrapped rod conveyed thereby, in particular its wrapping, the output signal whereof is conducted to a controllable drive for the conveyor belt.
The invention has a number of advantages:
The adjustment of the speeds of the format belt and/or of the wrapping strip to pre-determined speeds is advantageous per se, since this way for instance the lengths of the articles produced (cigarettes, filter rods) can be kept exactly constant or if necessary modified in a defined manner. These advantages are particularly desirable in the case of multiple rod machines (two or more conveyor belts and wrapping strips in one rod machine) because there there is a particularly clear need for exactly synchronous movement of the format belts and/or coating strips
The invention will now be further described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which
Fig. 1 shows a drive diagram for a cigarette rod machine with two rod conveyors to form two cigarette rods and a shared blade device.
Fig. 2 shows a view in perspective of two powered format belts (conveyor belts) arranged parallel to one another, with speed sensors.
Figs. 3 and 4 show a variant of the control arrangement according to Figs. 1 and 2.
Figures 1 and 2 describe a double rod machine for the production of c gaLettes. Two tobacco rods 2a, 2b are conveyed after their formation which is executed in a manner known per se, onto a cigarette paper strip 6a, 6b, by two air-permeable suction conveyor belts 3a, 3b, against which they are held in a manner known per se by means of reduced pressure in the reduced pressure chambers 4a, 4b. The cigarette paper strips are conducted over rollers 7a,7b and are carried along by conveyor belts, so-called format belts 8a, 8b made of fabric, along with the tobacco rods 2a, 2b laid on them. The format belt 8a is conducted over the rollers 9a, lla, 12a, 13a, and 14a, and may be driven by an electrical drive motor 15a. The format tape 8b is conducted over the rollers 9b, llb, 12b, 13b and 14b and may be driven by an electrical drive motor 15b. The format belts 8a,8b convey the cigarette paper strips 6a, 6b along with the tobacco rods 2a, 2b through a so-called format 16a, 16b, wherein the paper strips are laid continuously around the tobacco rods, coated with adhesive on a projecting edge and shaped by pressing the edges into continuously closed cigarette rods 17a or 17b Details of formats or adhesion devices are known to the Applicant through US-PS 3 624 722, GB-PS 1 575 910 or through the cigarette rod machines
GARANT and PROTOS, well known in the cigarette industry, and therefore are indicated only schematically in the description.
A shared blade device 18 with blades 19 cuts cigarettes 21a, 21b of single or multiple standard length from both rods.
26a and 26b designate transducers for the speeds of format belts 8a, Bb. Such transducers are known per se and are based for example on the optical correlation measurement with optical sensors. A orrcspondlng appliance is known under the designation Industriekorrelator DMK 170, optical transducer DK 25 of the company Entress + Hauser, 7867 Maulburg, FGR.
The speed-dependent measuring signals are conducted to a control unit 27a or 27b, wherein the signals are compared with pre-determined values (set values). These set values are preferably provided by a pulse generator 28 for the revolutions of the rod machine 1, the pulse frequency whereof can be adjustable via a transmitter 25. The output signals of the control unit 27a, 27b control power intensifiers 29a, 29b, which supply the electrical drive motors 15a, 15b of the format belts 8a, 8b with electrical energy in such a way that the deviation between the format belt speed-dependent measuring signals and the machine speed-dependent signals is reduced or removed entirely.The pre-determined signal for the control of the format belts can also be used to control the cigarette lengths, if the cigarette length is controllable by modifying the ratio format belt speed to revolutions of the blade device 18.
The blade device 18 can be driven in dependency on the main drive of the rod machine 1. However its revolutions can also be controlled by the pulse generator 28, via its own drive motor 31, as indicated by a broken line of action 32.
Instead of transducers 26a, 26b for the speeds of the format belts 8a or Bb, transducers 26a, 26b may be provided for the speeds of the cigarette paper strips 6a or 6b, which at the same time represent a measure of the speed of the coated rods 17a or 17b.
According to the speeds of the cigarette paper strips, the speeds of the format belts can be controlled in the manner described so that the speeds of the cigarette paper strips are kept constant.
It may be advisable to record both the speeds of the format belts and those of the cigarette paper strips, and to control the speeds of the format belts and/or of cigarette paper strips with the corresponding measuring signals.
The speeds of the format belts may also be controlled in a manner other than by means of special drive motors e.g. by means of controllable gearing known per se.
The speed-dependent measuring signals of the transducers 26a, 26b, 36a, 36b can be used according to a further embodiment of the invention, to control the course of the cigarette paper strips 6a or 6b in such a way that the paper tensions are kept between limit values before entering the formats 16a or 16b, so that the paper neither tears nor is fed in too loosely. Paper tensions can be controlled by the drives of offtake rollers for removing the paper or by controlled braking of the paper strips.
The control arrangement according to Figures 3 & BR< 4 differs from that of 1 or 2 in that the format belts or coating strips are not controlled independently of one another but in that one format belt or paper strip leads the other. Parts of
Figures 3 & 4 corresponding to parts of the same kind in Figures 1 & 2 are designated by the same reference numbers increased by 100, and are no longer explained individually.
The speed-dependent measuring signal of the transducer 126a for the format belt 108a is the command variable cf a control unit 141 to which the speed-dependent output signal of the transducer 126b for the format belt 108b is conducted. In the case of a deviation in the measuring signal of format belt 108b from the measuring signal of format belt 108a, the control unit 141 gives a signal to the power amplifier 142, which supplies the drive motor 115b of the format belt 108b with electrical energy in such a way that the speed of the format belt 108b is adjusted to that of the leading format belt 108a.
A variant of Figures 3 & 4 consists in the fact that the control of the motors 115a, 115b does not take place according to the measuring signals for the speeds of the format belts, but according to the measuring signals for the speeds of the cigarette paper strips 106a, 106b. These measuring signals can be supplied by transducers 136a, 136b.
The circuit of Figures 3 & 4 can be extended to the point where the drive motor 115a for the format belt 108a is controlled in the manner described in Figures 1 & 2 by control means 125, 126a, 127a, 128 and 129a at constant format belt speed, and the measuring signal for the speed of the format belt 108a at the same time serves as a command variable for the control circuit 126b, 141, 142 and 115b.
Claims (12)
1. Process for controlling the conveying of at least one continuously formed rod each consisting of a filling and a surrounding wrapping by means of a driven conveyor in a rod chine of the tobacco processing industry, wherein, depending on the speed of the conveyor or of the wrapped rod conveyed thereby, in particular -the wrapping thereof, a measuring signal is formed and the conveying speed of the conveyor is controlled in dependence upon the measuring signal.
2. Process according to claim 1, characterised in that, depending on the speeds of a number of conveyor belts or rods, measuring signals are created in a rod machine and the conveying speeds of the conveyor belts are controlled.
3. Process according to claim 2, characterised n that, depending on tiíe speeds of the conveyor belts or the rods, measuring signals are created and the conveyor belts are controlled independently of one another at predetermined speeds.

Process according to one or more of the preceding claims, characterised in that the speed-dependent measuring signal for a conveyor belt or a rod or the speed-dependent measuring signals for a number of conveyor belts or rods is/are compared with set value signals, which are created according to the machine speed, and in that if deviations in the signals occur with at least one conveyor belt or rod, preferably with all conveyor belts or rods, the conveyor belt or belts are adjust-ed to speeds corresponding to the set value signals.

Process according to claim 1 and/or 2, characterised in that with a number of conveyor belts or rods in a rod machine, a speed-dependent signal for a conveyor belt or a rod controls the speed of at least one further conveyor belt, so that the speed of the further conveyor belt or rod or conveyor belts or rods is adjusted to the speed of the leading conveyor beGt or rod

Arrangement for controlling the conveying of at least one continuously formed rod consisting of a filling and a wrapping surrounding it, by means of a driven conveyor in a rod machine of the tobacco processing industry, wherein at least one transducer is provided for the speed of the conveyor or of the wrapped rod conveyed by it, in particular the wrapping thereof, the output signal whereof is conducted to a controllable drive for the conveyor belt
7.Arrangement according to claim 6, wherein transducers are provided for the speeds of a number of conveyor belts or rods, the output signals of which transducers are conducted in each case to a controllable drive for an accompanying conveyor belt.
8. Arrangement according to claim 7, wherein the output signals of the transducers are conducted in each case to drives controllable independently of one another (Fig. 2).
9. Arrangement according to any one of claims 6 to 8, wherein the measuring signal of a transducer for the speed of a conveyor belt or a wrapping, or the measuring signals of transducers for the speeds of a number of conveyor belts or wrappings can be conducted to a comparison member or comparison members which receive set value signals from set value adjusters and a deviation signal or deviation signals is/are conducted at least to one controllable drive, preferably to all drives of the conveyor belts.

Arrangement according to claim 6 and/or 7, wherein with a number of conveyor belts and rods in a rod machine the speed-dependent measuring signal of a leading transducer is conducted to a comparison member to which a speed-dependent signal of a transucer assigned te a conducted conveyor belt or rod, is conducted, and a deviation signal is conducted to a controllable drive for the conducted conveyor belt.
11. Process for controlling the conveying of at least one continuously formed rod, substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
12. Arrangement for controlling the conveying of at least one continously formed rod, substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
