Abstract

Means are provided for regulating, from a supplementary source, the fluid flow rate through a fluid regulating valve actuated by an energy or temperature sensitive element. As shown an energy dissipating element or elements 12, energised from a supplementary source, are situated such that the energy dissipated is sensed by an energy or temperature sensitive element 8 which regulates the relative position of an actuator 5 of a fluid regulating valve thereby regulating the fluid flow rate through the valve. The energy or temperature sensitive element may be located remote from the valve. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO FLUID REGULATING V4LVES.
This invention relates to fluid regulating valves and more particularly to means of actuating fluid regulating valves.
It is a well known principle that regulating valves may be actuated by an energy or temperature sensitive element that will cause the valve to vary the fluid flow rate according to the temperature to which the energy or temperature sensitive element is subjected.
In variations of such valves, the energy or temperature sensitive element may be either integral with or remote from the valve body.
One use of such a valve is to control an environment by regulating the water flow to a central heating radiator.
It is an object of this invention to provide a means by which a supplementary source may be used to control or regulate a fluid regulating valve actuated by an energy or temperature sensitive element.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure t shows a section of a valve whereby a fluid flow through ports (1) and (2) and an orifice (3) in a valve body (4) can be regulated by moving the valve disc (5) relative to an orifice (3).
The valve disc (5) in this section would be held away from the orifice (3) by a spring (6) and would be moved towards the orifice (3) by a force acting on an actuator shaft (7).
Figure 2 shows an arrangement in which an energy or temperature sensitive element (8) is retained in contact with a housing (9) by an actuator body (10) and spring (11), the housing (9) being in a preset or adjustable position relative to the valve body (4), and the actual position of the actuator body (10) and actuator shaft (7) relative to the housing (9) being dependent upon the state of the energy or temperature sensitive element (8).
The energy or temperature sensitive element (8) will expand as the energy or temperature, to which it is being subjected, increases, causing the actuator body (10) and actuator shaft (7) to move in a direction away from the housing (9) thereby causing the valve disc (5) to move relative to the orifice (3) thus regulating the fluid flow.
Nn energy dissipating element or elements (12) which in this example are electrically energised, are situated in the vicinity of the energy or temperature sensitive element (8) such that the energy or temperature sensitive element (8) is subjected to the energy or heat dissipated by the energy dissipating element or elements (12) which are connected to terminals (13) to enable electrical connection from a supplementary source.
When the energy dissipating element or elements (12) are energised, the energy or heat dissipated is sensed by the energy or temperature sensitive element (8) which changes its state, by expanding or contracting, according to the energy dissipated and causes the actuator shaft (7) to move relatively to the valve body (4) thus moving the valve disc (5) and regulating the fluid flow.
The energy dissipating element or elements (12) in the vicinity of the energy or temperature sensitive element (8) may be replaced by a heat conducting means thereby enabling the energy dissipating element or elements (12) to be located at a position not in the close vicinity of the energy or temperature sensitive element.
In variations of a valve, such as with a remote energy or temperature sensitive element, the remote energy or temperature sensitive element would be subjected to the energy or heat dissipated from the energy dissipating element or elements (12).
4 supplementary source would have a means of controlling or varying the amount of energy supplied to the energy dissipating element or elements thereby controlling the heat dissipated by the energy dissipating element or elements (12) thereby regulating the fluid flow rate.
Some of the means of varying the amount of energy supplied to the energy dissipating element or elements by a supplementary source may be by a. switching the energy supply on and off.
b. varying the voltage or current of the energy supply.
c. modulating the energy supply.
d. pulsing the energy supply.
e. varying the frequency of the energy supply.
f. polarizing the energy supply.
any such means being arranged either singly or in combination.
