Abstract
A pack comprises two articles, for example cartons 1, and two portions 2 of self-adhesive tape adhered to the articles along respective opposite sides of the pack and formed transversely with parallel lines 3 of perforations. The lines 3 are spaced apart through between 8 mm. and 50 mm., preferably between 15 mm. and 35 mm. The tape is laminated, e.g. comprises a base layer of PVC and a top layer of polypropylene, with the respective molecular orientations of the two layers being not only in the plane of the tape, but at right-angles to each other, with one being longitudinal of the tape. The central parts of the lines 3 can be omitted. <IMAGE>
Description
ADHESIVE TAPE
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided adhesive tape formed transversely with linear zones of weakness, the zones being spaced apart along the tape through between 8 millimetres and 50 millimetres.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a pack comprising first and second articles, and first and second tape portions adhered to the articles along respective opposite sides of the pack and formed transversely with linear zones of weakness spaced apart along their tape portion.
The zones are preferably spaced apart through between 15 millimetres and 35 millimetres.
To give good mechanical strength to the tape, it is advantageously laminated, for example comprises a base layer of PVC and a top layer of polypropylene on one surface of the base layer, with the adhesive on the other surface of the base layer, and with the molecular orientation of the PVC layer and the molecular orientation of the polypropylene layer being not only in the plane of the tape, but also at right-angles to each other, with one being longitudinal of the tape and the other being transverse thereto.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a perspective view from above of a pack consisting of two gable-topped cartons attached together by sections of adhesive tape,
Figure 2 shows a view similar to Figure 1 of a modified version of the pack, and
Figure 3 shows a view similar to Figure 1 of a further modified version of the pack.
Referring to the drawings, two gable-topped cartons 1 have been side-taped together along respective opposite sides of the pack by two sections 2 of self-adhesive tape of 30 millimetres width to form the pack. Parallel lines 3 of perforations extend perpendicularly across each section 2 and are spaced apart through 33.5 millimetres. Each line of perforations extends across substantially the whole width of its section 2. To separate the two cartons, the consumer simply turns the two cartons relative to each other about a horizontal axis, whereupon the sections 2 naturally tear along the lines 3 nearest the carton interface at the pack centre.
In the version shown in Figure 2, the pack consists of two plastics squeeze bottles 11 attached together side-by-side by a wrapped-round, selfadhesive tape section 12 of 75 millimetres width having parallel lines 13 of perforations extending perpendicularly across the tape section 12. The lines 13 are spaced apart through 33.5 millimetres and each extend across substantially the whole width of the section 13. Again, to separate the two bottles 11, the consumer simply turns the two bottles relative to each other about a horizontal axis, whereupon the section 12 naturally tears along the lines 13 nearest the pack centre.
Referring to Figure 3, instead of the tape being formed with linear zones of weakness in the form of lines of perforations across the whole width of the tape, such zones can be provided by pairs of short lines of perforations extending inwards from the longitudinal edges of the tape 22 at directly opposite locations, while leaving the tape uncut between the lines 23 of each pair. To promote easy deliberate tearing, the lines 23 of perforations nick their respective edges of the tape. For example, on a 30 millimetre wide tape, the lines of each pair can extend in 5 millimetres, from their respective tape edges, leaving 20 millimetres, plain therebetween. In general, each short line extends for between 5% and 25% of the tape width, preferably between 7% and 15%.
Claims (15)

5. Adhesive tape as claimed in claim 4, wherein said molecular orientations are at right angles to each other.
6. Adhesive tape as claimed in claim 4 or 5, wherein said first and second layers are a base layer of PVC and a top layer of polypropylene on one surface of the base layer, with the adhesive on the other surface of the base layer.
7. Adhesive tape as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein said zones are constituted by parallel lines of perforations.
8. Adhesive tape as claimed in claim 7, wherein each line of perforations extends across substantially the whole width of the tape.
9. Adhesive tape as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein said zones are constituted by respective pairs of short lines of perforations extending inwards from the longitudinal edges of the tape at directly opposite locations, while leaving the tape uncut between the lines of each pair.
10. Adhesive tape as claimed in claim 9, wherein each short line of perforations extends for between 5% and 25% of the tape width.
11. Adhesive tape as claimed in claim 10, wherein each short line of perforations extends for between 7% and 15% of the tape width.
12. Adhesive tape as claimed in claim 8, 9, 10 or 11, wherein the lines of perforations nick the edges of the tape.
