Abstract
A cue guide or rest for use in billiard, snooker and like games has a handle (3) to which is attached a head having a pair of support feet (5) and a cue guide portion (14) displaced laterally from the longitudinal axis of the handle and the support feet. The cue guide portion (14) is preferably formed on a removable extension piece (2) adapted to fit on a standard cross rest (1). Lateral displacement of the cue guide portion enables it to be positioned closer to or over a cushion (16) of a table (6), so that it is easier to cue along or over the cushion. <IMAGE>
Description
RESTS FOR USE IN BILLIARDS, SNOOKER
AND LIKE GAMES
This invention relates to a rest for use in billiards, snooker and like games.
In these games the player normally guides the cue on his or her hand, but where this is not possible a rest is used to guide the cue. There are of course various types of rest, but the one that is used most often is the cross rest, which provides an extension of the player's arm, and has a handle with a cross piece at one end to support the rest on the table and provide a cue guide portion. There are some situations where it is necessary to use the cross rest, but it is difficult to position it so that the cue ball can be struck as desired, for example, where the cue ball is tight against a side cushion of the table, and the player has to cue along or over the cushion.
According to a first aspect of our invention, a rest for use in billiards, snooker and like games comprises a handle and a head attached to the handle, the head having a pair of support feet and a cue guide portion displaced laterally from the longitudinal axis of the handle and the support feet.
The lateral displacement of the cue guide portion enables it to be positioned closer to or over the cushion, which is advantageous in the position described above.
Preferably, the cue guide portion is higher in relation to the table than a normal cross rest, so that it can in fact lie over the cushion.
The cue guide portion may be formed integrally with the support feet, but is preferably formed as a removable extension piece adapted to fit on a standard cross rest. This has the advantage that the standard rest can be adapted for left or right-handed players, so that special rests are not required.
According to a further aspect of our invention we provide an extension for a cross rest for use in billiards, snooker and like games, the cross rest comprising a handle having at one end a cross-shaped head comprising a first pair of support feet and a second pair of feet between which a cue is guided, the extension having a recess adapted to receive the second pair of feet, and a cue guide portion spaced from the recess, such that in a position of use the cue guide portion is spaced laterally from the first pair of feet.
Preferably, the cue guide portion in its position of use is a greater distance from the support feet than the guide portion of the cross rest.
An embodiment of both aspects of our invention is illustrated, by way of example only, in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of a cross rest
provided with an extension; and
Figure 2 is a underneath view of the extension.
Figure 1 shows a standard cross rest 1 for use in billiards or snooker on which is mounted an extension 2. The rest 1 has a handle 3, to one end of which is attached a cross-shaped head 4. The head 4 has a first pair of support feet 5, which in use support the rest 1 on the table 6, and a second pair of upstanding feet 7, between which there is a guide portion 8 for a cue (not shown). Each foot 5, 7 is provided with a rubber tip 9.
The extension 2 is removably mounted on the head 4. It is of elongate outline, and is made of a rigid plastics material. The extension 2 has an enlarged portion 10 provided with a recess 11 which is adapted to receive the second pair of feet 7. The recess 11 has tapered walls 12 to ensure that the feet 7 are firmly retained. The extension 2 has a further portion 13 extending from the portion 10. The portion 13 has a V-shaped notch 14, which forms a cue guide portion.
When the extension is mounted on the rest 1 the notch 14 is spaced laterally from the support feet 5, and upwardly relative to the guide portion 8. The distance between the lower edge 15 of the extension and the table 6 is greater than the height of a cushion 16, so that the extension 2 can overlie the cushion.
The extension 2 is used on the rest 1 in a situation where the cue ball (not shown) is tight against a side cushion 15 of the table 6, and the player wishes to cue along or over the cushion. The lateral displacement of the cue guide portion enables it to be positioned closer to or over the cushion, so that it is easier to cue along or over the cushion.
The extension 2 can be mounted the other way round on the rest 1, so can be used by right or left-handed players.
It is expected that the extension 2 will be used mainly in the situation described above, but it may of course also be used in other positions. Modifications of the illustrated embodiment may also be made to suit any particular situation.
