Abstract

A sail reefing drum uses webbing instead of rope to rotate the drum. The drum comprises top and bottom flanges screwed together and locked by a screw interrupting the threads. This produces an integral sealed unit that houses bearings and a water tight seal. (figure 2 not shown). The drum rotates about a spindle fixed to the deck, is fastened to the luff or leading edge of the sail and rotates within a fixed outer casing. When tension is applied to the webbing coiled around the drum the luff or leading edge of the sail is rotated rolling the sail up thus furling or reducing the sail area. To unfurl the sail tension is put on the jib sheets unrolling the sail but rolling the webbing back on the drum. <IMAGE>

Description

,E3 vTtRT -.5TG ROLLER REEFING This invention relates to a new system of roller reefing for yachts, overcoming existing inherent design and handling problems when reefing uibs and fore sails.
The design arose through practical experience when an existing design jammed. The reason for this is that to reef, or reduce sail area when the boat is overpressed, a rope is pulled which unwinds and in doing so rotates a drum which rolls the fore sail up around its luff or leading edge. The rope onthis design tended to slip over the flange of the drum or jam down between the existing coils locking the unit solid. To cure this my design incorpor2tes the following features.
1) Webbing is used instead of rope around the drum because it lays more easily and cannot jam on itself.
2) An outer casing encloses the drum which prevents the webbing from slipping off and guides it to deck level.
3) mhe end of the webbing is connected to rope so that it can be led back to the cockpit in the conventional manner.
4) As space is not required for the rope to lay on the drum, the overall height of the unit is less than the conventional rope system.
3) :'ith the reduction in height the diameter of the drum can be increased to advantage giving nore torque without making the unit too large.
6j In the design presented the drum consists of two flanges screwed together forming an intergral unit with the bearings simplifying construction,assembly and effectiveness of the water tight seal.
7) Two bearings are used one a dual axial radial to take the sideways torque of the webbing and a larger diameter thrust bearing to take the tension in the forestay.
KEY TO FIGURE 1(COMPARISON) A Sail is reefed by pulling the line,rolling the sail up.
B The Webfurling drum uses webbing,it lays in the drum,reducing the risk of jamming.
C The Webfurling drum is both lower and wider,exerting more torque on the sail.
D Fairleads lead the webbing back to the cockpit.

This component screws onto the complete unit.
B Spindle. This is attached to the deck and remains stationary while the drum rotates.
C Top thrust bearing to take the tension in the jib luff and the sideways torque of the webbing and lower axial-radial bearing to take sideways torque of webbing.
D Seal, to prevent the entry of seawater.
E Lower flange and bearing housing.
F Cover with slit. The cover is to prevent jammage and the slit to guide the webbing. It is attached onto the spindle with a sleeve.
G Webbing, attached to the locking screw this rotates the drum.
H Locking screw, which prevents the unit from unscrewing, and also holds the webbing in place.
KEY TO FIGURE 3(CONSTRUCTION) A Webbing lies in channel.(Depth of which varies according to length of webbing and height accordig to the height of webbing.

Claims (4)

1) The use of webbing instead of rope to initiate the rotary movement whereby the fore sail is rolled up around the luff or leading edge of the sail.
2) The drum as claimed in claim (1) is constructed using two flanges which are screwed together and locked by a screw interrupting the threads.
3j The unit as in claim (1) and (2) has a close fitting fixed outer casing incorporated in the design leading the webbing down to deck level.
4) The webbing as in previous claims (1),(2) and (3) is connected to a round section rope leading back to the cockpit of the boat.
