Abstract

219,716. Martin, H. Feb. 6, 1923. Tell-tale apparatus.-Relates to manometers of the electrical resistance type suitable for use as petrol level indicators for the tanks of motor vehicles. One leg of the U-tube containing mercury or other conducting liquid is formed by a chamber a<1> and the other leg by the cylindrical part a of the cover plate g. The naked resistance wire b, the resistance of which depends on the extent of immersion in the mercury, is wound in a helical groove on an insulating former l. Deep flutes are cut in the former, and if of ebonite it is polished to prevent filming by the mercury. The former may be made of glass or porcelain. The coil b above the mercury may be covered with oil to prevent filming and corrosion, and an enlarged space a<2> is provided to receive the.oil when the mercury rises. The cover h carrying the former l is insulated, and supporting lugs h<1> are provided for the device. A pipe d connects the chamber a<1> with the tank. The resistance b is connected to a coil indicator e and a battery f which may be the battery of the motor vehicle. A fixed external resistance k is provided in circuit. It may be. wound on a former surrounding the casing a<1> as shown in Fig. 1, or may be arranged on the insulated cover h. A pushbutton switch may be arranged in the circuit so that the indicator is normally, inoperative. The resistances of the coils of the indicator may be adjusted so as to limit the movement which may then be magnified by gearing. A small carbon rod may be substituted for the resistance wire b. Specification 164,828 is referred to.
