Description

SPECIFICATION Packaging This invention relates to packaging, and more particularly concerns resilient packing corner pieces.
When packaging delicate articles for transport or storage, it is necessary to package them in such a way that they are not damaged. This is usually effected by arranging packaging to support the article inside the carton. This packaging is usually in the form of resilient packing corner pieces which both locate and support the article within a carton.
Special considerations for the design of the corner pieces have to be employed to ensure that the article is properly protected against shock and other damage. The corner piece has not only to support the article but also to provide a cushioning effect for the article.
In order to provide the cushioning effect, the corner pieces are manufactured from a resilient material, for example, expanded polystyrene or polyethylene. Furthermore, the weight and fragility of the particular article to be packaged has to be taken into consideration.
It is necessary for the surface area to be such that the weight of the article compresses the material to an extent such that the corner piece cushions the article to the desired extent whilst still serving to provide positive location within the carton. Therefore, the surface area must not be so small that the weight of the article compresses the material too much, nor so large that the weight of the article causes insufficient compression of the material which may result in inadequate protection against shock. Thus, the surface area must lie within certain limits dependent upon the weight and fragility of the article and the resistance of the material.
The thicknesses of the walls also have to meet certain criteria, similar to those of the surface area. The walls must not be so thin that they allow the material to bottom on compression under the weight of the article.
It will be seen therefore that it is necessary that each corner piece is designed to meet the requirements of a specific article to be packaged and usually cannot be used to package other articles.
It is an object of this invention to provide resilient packing corner pieces which can be used to package different articles.
In accordance with this invention there is provided a packaging piece formed substantially of a resilient material, said packaging piece having a first support surface adapted to support a first article when said packaging piece is in a first orientation and a second support surface adapted to support a second article when said packaging piece is in a second orientation.
Preferably, the packaging piece comprises a packaging corner piece.
Preferably, the design of the packaging piece is such that design criteria for supporting the first article in the first orientation is different from design criteria for supporting the second article in-the second orientation.
Design criteria which should be taken into account for any given resilient material includes the amount of material in the region of the first and second supporting surfaces in the first and second orientations, and the area of contact with the respective articles.
Conveniently, the packaging piece comprises first and second support members.
Desirably, each support surface comprises first, second and third faces.
In the first orientation, the first support member may define the first face of the first support surface, and the second support member may define the second and third faces of the first support surface.
In the second orientation, the second support member may define the first face of the second support surface, and the first support member may define the second and third faces of the second support surface.
Chamfers, apertures or other features may be provided in the packaging piece in order to meet design criteria for supporting the first and second articles.
Design criteria for supporting the first article in the first orientation may be dependent upon the weight and fragility of the first article and design criteria for supporting the second article in the second orientation may be dependent upon the weight and fragility of the second article.
In order to support the first or second article, the packaging pieces are disposed within a carton in desired positions in the first or second orientations respectively.
Where the packaging piece is a corner piece and the article to be supported is generally rectangular then the first, second and third faces of the support surfaces, are desirably mutually perpendicular. The first face of the support surface may support the article at the bottom thereof, and the second and third faces of the support surface may contact the article at the sides thereof.
A packaging corner piece is preferably disposed at each corner of the carton.
Retaining means which may be an adhesive retaining means protected by a removable backing strip may be provided to retain the corner piece in the carton.
The retaining means may be used to retain the packaging pieces within the carton in the desired position so that the article may be located therein. The packaging piece can be used in two orientations and in view of this it is desirable that first and second retaining means are provided. The first retaining means may be provided on the first support member and the second retaining means may be provided on the second support member.
The resilient material may be an expanded polymeric material, for example, polystyrene or polyethylene.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of this invention in the first orientation; and Figure 2 represents a perspective view of this invention in the second orientation.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, a corner piece 1 is provided for packaging articles, for example, computer equipment, in cartons. The corner piece 1 comprises first and second support members 2 and 3 respectively and is a moulding of a resilient expanded polymeric material.
The corner piece 1 is adapted to be used in a first orientation (Fig. 1) to support a first article, and in a second orientation (Fig. 2) to support a second article.
In the first orientation, as shown in Fig. 1, first support member 2 defines a first face 4 of the first support surface 5. Second support member 3 defines second and third faces 6 and 7 respectively of the first support surface 5.
In order to package the first article, four packaging pieces 1 are placed in the first orientation in the bottom corners of a carton.
The first article is placed on the packaging pieces so that the first face 4 of the first support surface 5 of each packaging piece supports the first article. The second and third faces, 6 and 7 of the first support surface contact the sides of the first article.
The area of first support surface 5 is dependent upon the weight and fragility of the first article. The thicknesses A, B and C of the first and second support members is also dependent upon the weight and fragility of the first article.
In the second orientation, as shown in Fig.
2, second support member 3 defines a second face 8 of the second support surface 9.
First support member 2 defines second and third faces 10 and 11 respectively of the second support surface 9.
In order to package the second article, four packaging pieces 1 are placed in the second orientation in the bottom corners of a carton.
The second article is placed on the packaging pieces so that the first face 8 of the second support surface 9 of each packaging piece supports the second article. The second and third faces 10 and 11 of the second support surface contact the sides of the second article.
The area of second support surface 8 is dependent upon the weight and fragility of the second article. The thicknesses D, E and F of the second and first support members is also dependent upon the weight and fragility of the second article.
Chamfer 12 as shown in Fig. 1, is to provide first support surface 5 with the desired area for the first article. Similarly, aperture 13 is provided so that the first and second support surfacess 4 and 9 respectively, have the desired area for the first and second articles.
Four more packaging pieces are then placed upon the top of the article in the appropriate orientation so that eight corner pieces are provided to package the article.
Although this invention has been specifically described with respect to a corner piece, other types of packaging piece are envisaged.
For example a packaging piece may be adapted to support one end of a first article in a first orientation and to support one end of a second article in a second orientation.
It is an advantage of this invention that it obviates the need to store and handle two different corner pieces for packaging two different articles. Furthermore, storage and transport costs are reduced since the corner pieces are designed to be stackable.
Manufacturing costs are also reduced since packaging pieces designed to support two different articles can be produced in a single mould.
