Abstract

Apparatus for the removal and disposal of animal waste comprises a receptacle (10) having an opening at its forward end, one edge of which is formed by a relatively rigid lip (14). The apparatus also comprises a spatula (12) for pushing waste into the receptacle (10) over the lip (14) which is sufficiently rigid to withstand the force exerted by the spatula in moving the waste over it. The spatula (12) is sufficiently small that is can be received in the receptacle (10) after use for disposal with the waste. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Device for disposal and removal of animal waste The present invention relates to apparatus for the removal and disposal of animal waste and, in particlar, to a receptacle for removal and disposal of dog excreta.
With the continuous increase in the number of pets kept in urban areas, the volume of animal waste in public areas such as pavements, parks and the like is also increasing.
Such waste causes inconvenience and may, in some circumstances, constitute a health hazard. For these reasons, the public authorities in many areas require pet owners to remove and dispose of any waste left by their animals in public areas.
Consequently, a number of devices have been proposed for use in the removal and disposal of animal waste. Some of these consist of a form of tongs or shovel, in some cases, shrouded with a plastic or paper bag which prevents direct contact between the waste and the operative end of the device.
Such devices are relatively expensive and cumbersome to carry about when taking the pet for a run.
Other devices available consist of a paper or plastic bag or receptacle provided at its open end with some form of guiding or grasping means which can be manipulated to push the waste into the receptacle. Although, they have the advantage that they are disposabie, such devices are relatively expensive to manufacture and require a certain amount of manual dexterity to enable them to be used effectively.
In accordance with the invention there is provided apparatus for the removal and disposal of animal waste, the apparatus comprising a receptacle having an opening, one edge of which is formed by a relatively rigid lip, and a spatula for pushing waste into the receptacle over the lip which is sufficiently rigid to withstand the force exerted by the spatula in moving the waste over it; the spatula being of a size to be receivable in the receptacle, after use for disposal with the waste.
Preferably, the receptacle and spatula are of paper, cardboard or other biodegradable material and the lip is formed by folding a flap back over an edge of the opening.
A device in accordance with the invention for the removal and disposal of animal waste will now be described in detail, by way of example, with reference to the drawings, in which; Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device in accordance with the invention; and Fig. 2 is an exploded view of the receptacle of Fig. 1.
The device for the removal and disposal of animal waste shown in the drawings comprises a receptacle 10 and a spatula 12.
The receptacle 10 is in the form of an envelope made by cutting, folding and gluing a single sheet of paper to produce a flattened tube which is closed at one end and which is provided at its other end with a protruding lip 14. The lip 14 is, in the example shown in the drawings, formed by folding the sheet material of the receptacle back on itself so that the lip 14 is more rigid than the rest of the receptacle 10. Alternatively, the lip 14 may be formed by gluing a piece of stiff card to the edge of the receptacle.
Because receptacle 10 is made of paper or thin card, it is biodegradable, unlike the plastic bags commonly used in the disposal of animal waste. It may additionally be impregnated, if desired, with a deodorant substance so that the chance of the used receptacle smelling unpleasant are reduced. The use of paper and the fact that the receptacle 10 can be made from a single sheet of paper using conventional paper cutting and folding techniques also means that the receptacles can be made very cheaply, a fact which is of importance given that the finished item is intended to be disposable. The outside of the receptacle 10 can be printed with directions for use or decorative material, if desired. The spatula 12 is simply a rectangle cut from a sheet of fairly rigid card. It is, however, of such a size that it will slip easily into the receptacle 10.
It is envisaged that the device will be supplied flat with the spatula 12 inside the envelope-like receptacle 10 to prevent its becoming lost. Thus providing a compact, easily portable means for disposing of animal waste.
In use, the spatula 12 is removed from the receptacle 10. The longitudinal edges 16 of the receptacle 10 are then squeezed towards one another to cause the end of the receptacle 10 adjacent the lip 14 to open. The receptacle 10 is then positioned adjacent the waste with the lip 14 on the ground close to it. The spatula 12 is then used to push the waste into the receptacle, the lip 14 being sufficiently rigid to withstand the force applied using the spatula 12. Because a separate spatula 12 is provided, movement of the waste into the receptacle 10 is straightforward and does not require the complicated manoeuvring necessary with some existing devices.
The used spatula 12 is then dropped into the receptacle 10 and the lip 14 folded over to close the open end of the receptacle, making a neat package ready for disposal.
Thus the device of the invention provides means for the removal and disposal of animal waste which may be cheap and easy to manufacture, compact and easy to use and which forms a closed biodegradable package, ready for disposal.
