Abstract

A zip-fastening flexible gaiter, as protective equipment to be used primarily on motor car steering racks and track control arms, in the form of a flexible, convoluted tube which has a flexible zip running along its whole length. To fit the gaiter, simply unzip it and place it around the steering rack and track control arm. Then re-zip it together and clamp it firmly at both ends with worm-drive ("Jubilee") clips. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Zip-fastening flexible gaiter This invention relates to a protective gaiter to be used in various applications but primarily on the steering rack on motor cars.
Protective gaiters comprise of a convoluted tube, generally made of rubber. They have been used for some time on motor cars, specifically to prevent grit, dirt and moisture from entering the steering rack where it connects to the track control arm.
The convolutions allow the gaiter to extend and retract as the track control arm moves in and out of the steering rack housing in a telescopic manner (see Fig. 1).
They do have limitations insomuch as replacement of these gaiters involves not only labour charges for the fitting of the gaiter but also the extra expense of having the track adjustment checked. This latter point is due to the fact that the end of the track control arm must be removed to facilitate replacement of the gaiter. On refitting the end of the track control arm, the steering alignment must be checked, using specialised equipment.
With reference to Fig. 1 on sheet 5, the number designations are as follows: 1. Represents the steering rack housing.
2. Represents a worm-drive clip.
(3) Represents the track control arm.
With reference to Fig. 2 on sheet 7 the number designations are as follows: 1. Represents the flexible gaiter 2. Represents the flexible zipper.
1. A zip-fastening flexible gaiter incorporating a flexible zipper in the gaiter, which means that the gaiter can be replaced without removal or replacement of any other parts.
Consequently it is not necessary to make any track adjustment after fitting of the gaiter.
The ends of the gaiter would be held firmly in position by either spring clips or wormdrive ("Jubilee") clips.
