Abstract

219,632. Marks, E. C. R., (Dunn Manufacturing Co.). April 16, 1923. Hooks, automatic release. -Means for lifting boring rods, tubes or casings from wells, comprising clamping means for the rods &c. and bails or suspension means removably secured to the means, are provided with means readily movable to permit engagement of the bails &c. with the clamping means but thereafter automatically movable to retain the bails &c. in position when a load is being sustained. The clamping device is provided with opposed pairs of arms 4, 5 between which the bails 9 are engaged; weighted members 15, pivoted at 20, engage recesses 14 in the upper arms to hold the bails in position when in use, but on lowering the device to the derrick floor &c. the members 15 are tilted to permit detachment of the bails. The pivot pins 20 may have recangular portions cooperating with an eccentric part of the bore of the member 15 to permit downward movement of the latter, such movement locking the member against pivoting until it is raised.
