Abstract

A safety lock which consists of an adjustable mechanical barrier 1 which prevents accidental syringe pump overruns so avoiding large drug or fluid overdose. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Syringe pump safety lock This invention relates to a safety lock to be attached to a syringe pump.
A syringe pump is a well known device which is used to depress the plunger of a syringe mechanically to allow the delivery of a drug or fluid from the syringe at a constant rate over a period of time. It consists of a holder for the body of the syringe and a sliding part which is attached to the plunger of the syringe. The sliding part is driven in a linear fashion by a motor so as to produce a slow, but constant, depression of the syringe plunger. The rate of depression is pre-set to one of a variety of rates.
Syringe pumps are commonly used to deliver drugs to a patient and are frequently set up to provide a prolonged infusion of several hours which requires there to be a large amount of drug in the syringe. If the syringe pump develops a malfunction which increases the rate of depression of the syringe plunger an excessive amount of drug may be delivered to the patient.
According to the present invention there is provided a syringe pump safety lock comprising a rigid barrier adapted to be located at any one of a number of different positions in the path of the syringe plunger, or plunger depressor, to limit the movement of the plunger and thereby to prevent the plunger moving beyond a certain point.
The rigid barrier may comprise a bridge marker which, in use, is placed below the plunger so as to allow only a limited movement of the plunger. As the plunger is depressed by the pump in accordance with the pre-set rate, the barrier is moved down in stages relative to the body of the syringe by the supervising staff but only such as to allow a small amount of plunger movement at any one time. In the event of a pump overrun malfunction developing, the barrier will prevent depression of the plunger beyond the point at which it was last located so preventing a large overdose of drug.
Referring to the drawing, Fig. 1, the syringe pump safety lock consists of a rigid barrier (1) which prevents the downward movement of the syringe plunger (2) when the syringe plunger reaches the barrier. The barrier can be moved down the syringe pump body in various steps so as to allow the syringe plunger to be depressed as the infusion progresses.
There is a locking mechanism to hold the barrier support in place to prevent accidental dislodgement.

Claims (2)

1. A syringe pump safety lock which provides an adjustable rigid barrier to syringe plunger depression such as to prevent large over delivery of fluid or drug contained within the syringe due to mechanical malfunction of the pump.
2. A syringe pump safety lock as claimed in Claim 1 which prevents large over delivery of fluid or drug contained within the syringe due to mis-setting of the syringe pump controls.
