Abstract

A grill comprises a grill radiant 5, a grill pan 6 and grill pan support means 8 adapted to support the grill pan 6 beneath said grill radiant 5. The grill pan 6 is provided with a food retaining mesh clamp 9 for clamping food articles thereon, means (not shown) being provided operable on said grill pan 6 being inserted and/or removed from beneath said grill radiant 5 for causing said food retaining clamp 9 to be turned over whereby both sides of a food article may be grilled. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to grills This invention relates to grills.
The grill may take any convenient form and may be an independent appliance or it may form part of a larger appliance e.g. a cooker or oven unit. The grill may be provided at 'eye-level', 'waist-level', or at any other convenient level and it may be provided in a chamber which is provided solely for grilling purposes or it may be provided in a chamber that can be used as a grill and, say, as an oven. It may also be gas or electrically operated.
According to the present invention there is provided a grill comprising a grill radiant, a grill pan, and grill pan support means adapted to support the grill pan beneath said grill radiant, the grill pan having food retaining means for clamping food articles thereon, means being provided operable on said grill pan being inserted and/or removed from beneath said grill radiant for causing said food retaining means or a part thereof to be turned over whereby both sides of a food article may be grilled.
In carrying out the invention, the means for causing said food retaining means or a part thereof to be turned over may comprise a ratchet and a rack and pinion arrangement operable between said grill pan and said grill pan support means.
In one arrangement it may be arranged that the grill pan is manually inserted and removed from beneath said grill radiant or it may be arranged that the insertion of the grill pan, the removal of the grill pan or the insertion and removal of the grill pan be effected automatically by arrangements as described in our copending patent application No. 8624592 (TINW/A).
The foregoing and other features of the invention will now be described reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figs. 1 to 5 depict and show the operating sequence of a grill according to the present invention.
In the drawings there is depicted an eyelevel grill 1 which is located on the splashback 2 of a cooker (not shown) of otherwise conventional form. The grill 1 includes a grill top 3 in the undersurface 4 of which is disposed a grill radiant 5 which may be gas or electrically operated. Beneath the grill radiant 5 is located a grill pan 6 which is supported on a grill pan support member 8 which is secured to or located on the splash-back 2.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings the grill pan 6 is shown in its 'withdrawn' position in which it is supported on the pan support member 8 in a position where it is clear of the grill radiant 5.
The pan support 6 is provided on its upper surface with a food supporting and clamping mesh 9, on which food articles to be grilled can be clamped. Associated with the grill pan 6 and the grill pan support 8 there is provided a food turning mechanism (not shown) by means of which the mesh 9 in which the food articles are clamped is turned so that both sides of a food article may be grilled thereby obviating the need for them to be turned by hand.
The food turning mechanism may conveniently comprise a rack and pinion mechanism which operates between the grill pan 6 and the grill pan support member 8 and in conjunction with a suitable ratchet such that when the grill pan is manually withdrawn from beneath the grill radiant and is then re-inserted, the combined action cause the mesh 9 to be turned over.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings, the grill 1 is shown with the grill pan 6 in its inserted position and with the mesh 9 flat on the surface of the grill pan. Any food articles in the mesh 9 will thus have their uppermost side subjected to the grill radiant 5.
As the grill pan 6 is withdrawn, as depicted in Fig. 3, the ratchet acts in conjunction with the rack and pinion to keep the mesh flat.
When the grill pan 6 is again re-inserted, the rack and pinion mechanism causes the mesh 9 to be progressively turned over, as shown in Fig. 4, such that when the grill pan 6 is fully inserted, as shown in Fig. 5, the food articles in the mesh 9 will have their reverse sides subjected to the grill radiant.
It will be appreciated that insertion and/or withdrawal of the grill pan 6 may be carried out manually or may be carried out automatically or semi-automatically as described in copending patent application No. 8624592 (TINW/A).
1. A grill comprising a grill radiant, a grill pan and grill pan support means adapted to support the grill pan beneath said grill radiant, the grill pan having food retaining means for clamping food articles thereon, means being provided operable on said grill pan being inserted and/or removed from beneath said grill radiant for causing said food retaining means or a part thereof to be turned over whereby both sides of a food article may be grilled.
2. A grill as claimed in claim 1, in which the means for causing said food retaining means or a part thereof to be turned over comprises a ratchet and a rack and pinion arrangement operable between said grill pan and said grill pan support means.
3. A grill as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, in which the grill pan is manually inserted and removed from beneath said grill radiant.
4. A grill as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, in which grill pan eject means is provided for ejecting said grill pan from beneath said grill
