SPECIFICATION
Artificial casing for meat'products 1 The present invention relates to a bag or artificial casing, for use in packaging meat products, hams and the like.
In the past, natural casings produced from animal intestines were used for those applica- tions. At the present time, the most common packaging method is to apply a heat shrinkable plastics material, since it is difficult to obtain large quantities of natural casings, and also the natural material is not always large enough for modern machinery.
The advantage of artificial materials over natural casings is that materials having a base of heat shrinkable plastics material will expand with the expansion of the product itself, when this is heated and will shrink when the product shrinks on cooling, in such a way that the formation of wrinkles on the surface of the finished product is avoided. Furthermore, the plastic has the property of being imperme- able, so avoiding the loss of liquids and the ingress of bacteria or other microorganisms which could alter the product. Thus, the artificial casing has the effect of extending the shelf life of the meat product.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of packaging a meat product which includes the step of at least partially surrounding the meat with an artificial casing of a multilayer sheet said sheet comprising a layer of heat shrinkable nylon, and on one surface of the nylon layer a layer of polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC), so that the polyvinylidene chloride layer is adjacent to the meat product to be packaged.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided an artificial casing for meat products said casing comprising a multilayer sheet of a layer of heat shrinkable nylon, and, on the inner surface of the nylon layer, a layer of polyvinylidene chloride.
Preferably the nylon layer has, on the opposite surface to that bearing the polyvinylidene chloride a layer of polyethylene or of other suitable material.
Edges of the multilayer sheet are desirably brought together at a seam to form the casing for the product, for example to make a tube.
The seam may be edge-to-edge or lapped, and in either case is preferably covered by a joining patch on that surface of the package which is remote from the meat product. Suit able materials for the joining patch include a compound of a layer of heat shrinkable nylon and one of polyethylene, or similar. The patch is preferably applied so that the polyethylene layer is in contact with the surface to which the patch is to be secured.
The PVDC layer is positioned on the inside of the artificial casing because it tends to ad here to the packaged product. Thus, separation of the casing and the meat product is made less likely even if the casing shrinks or expands during the cooking process, or during cooling of the product.
70. Two embodiments of the invention are described below, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a casing in which the edges of a multilayer sheet are joined at an edge-toedge seam, and Figure 2 shows a casing in which the seam is lapped.
The artificial casing comprises a multilayer sheet 1, having a layer of heat shrinkable ny- Ion 2 and an external layer 3 of polyethylene, and has on the inner surface of the casing and over the layer of heat shrinkable nylon, a film or coat of PVDC 4.
The edges of the multilayer sheet which forms the artificial casing remain either joined edge-to-edge (Fig. 1), or lapped (Fig. 2). In any case, the join is made by the location of a patch 5 on the exterior, over the polyethylene coat. The patch also has a compound structure of a layer of heat shrinkable nylon 6, and another of polyethylene 7, which is placed adjacent to the polyethylene layer of the artificial casing, and adheres thereto.
The joining patch for the edges of the multi- layer sheet could be of any other material sus- ceptible to heat sealing on the exterior of such a casing.
Claims (15)
1. A method of packaging a meat product which includes the step of at least partially surrounding the meat with an artifical casing of a multilayer sheet said sheet comprising a layer of heat shrinkable nylon, and on one surface of the nylon layer a layer of polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC), so that the polyvinylidene chloride layer is adjacent to the meat product to be packaged.
2. A method according to claim 1 in which edges of the multilayer sheet are brought together at a seam to form the casing for the product, and further comprising the step of securing the seam with a joining patch over the seam and on the surface of the multilayer sheet remote from the meat product.
3. A method according to claim 2 wherein the seam is edge-to-edge.
4. A method according to claim 2 wherein the seam is lapped.
5. A method according to any one of claims 2 to 5 wherein the multilayer sheet and the joining patch are secured by heat sealing.
6. A method substantially as herein described and illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawings.
7. An artificial casing for meat products said casing comprising a multilayer sheet of a layer of heat shrinkable nylon, and, on the inner surface of the nylon layer, a layer of polyvinylidene chloride.

8. A casing according to claim 7, which is tubular.
9. A casing according to claim 7 or claim 8 wherein edges of the multilayer sheet meet at a seam, the seam being covered by a joining patch located over the seam on the surface of the casing remote from the PVDC film, whereby the edges of the casing at the seam are secured.
10. A casing according to claim 9 wherein the seam is edge-to-edge.
11. A casing according to claim 9 wherein the seam is lapped.
12. A casing according to any one of claims 9 to 11 wherein one or both of the outer surface of the tube and the inner surface of the joining patch carry a layer of plastics material suitable for heat sealing the patch over the seam.
13. A casing substantially as herein described and illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawings.
14. A multilayer sheet comprising a layer of heat shrinkable nylon and a layer of polyvi- nylidene chloride, for producing a casing of any one of claims 7 to 13.
15. A food product comprising the artificial casing according to any one of claims 7 to 13 and a meat product, wherein the casing at -30 least partially surrounds the meat product, and wherein the meat product is adjacent to the polyvinylidene chloride film.
