Abstract
An offset printing press damping unit comprising applicator rollers (4) which (in use) apply, to a plate cylinder (1), damping solution which they receive from a distributor roller (5) and which the latter receives from a vibrator (6), said vibrator accepting the damping solution from a metering roller (8) which cooperates with a fountain roller (9) dipping into a supply (11) of the damping solution which is accommodated in a damping-solution tank (10). The metering roller (8) and the fountain roller (9) rotate in opposite directions, so that their outer cylindrical surfaces roll on one another, but are driven at different speeds. The metering roller (8) has a hydrophilic outer cylindrical surface and the fountain roller (9) has an oleophilic outer cylindrical surface. The unit enables ink and grease particles which enter the damping solutions to be emulsified therewith and thus incorporated thereinto. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Offset printing press damping unit
The invention relates to an offset printing press damping unit comprising applicator rollers which (in use) apply, to a plate cylinder, damping solution which they receive from a distributor roller and which the latter receives from a vibrator, said vibrator accepting the damping solution from a metering roller which cooperates with a fountain roller dipping into a supply of the damping solution which is accommodated in a damping-solution tank.
Only with great technical effort and outlay can such damping units (DE-OS 32 28 496) be made to return to the product being printed those ink particles which enter the damping solution. For this purpose, there is a known design which has a separate metering roller which permits to a certain degree the introduction of ink and grease particles into the damping solution.
Starting out from this prior art, it is an object of the present invention to provide an improved damping unit such that, with little technical effort and outlay, it is possible for an emulsion to be formed from the damping solution itself and the ink and grease particles which enter the damping solution.
According to the present invention, there is provided an offset printing press damping unit comprising applicator rollers which (in use) apply, to a plate cylinder, damping solution which they receive from a distributor roller and which the latter receives from a vibrator, said vibrator accepting the damping solution from a metering roller which cooperates with a fountain roller dipping into a supply of the damping solution which is accommodated in a damping-solution tank, wherein the metering roller and the fountain roller rotate in opposite directions, so that their outer cylindrical surfaces roll on one another, but the metering roller and the fountain roller are arranged to be driven at different speeds, the metering roller having a hydrophilic outer cylindrical surface and the fountain roller having an oleophilic outer cylindrical surface.
By virtue of the oleophilic outer cylindrical surface of the fountain roller, ink and grease particles are taken up from the damping solution and are incorporated into the damping solution between fountain roller and metering roller, so that an emulsion with very low ink and grease contents is produced, the different speeds of rotation of the metering roller and fountain roller resulting in a slip between these two rollers, this slip considerably facilitating the formation of the desired emulsion.
In a particularly advantageous arrangement, it is possible, by means of the two rollers, even to meter the damping solution without this necessitating any additional outlay.
The invention will be more fully explained with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing, the single Figure of which is a side view showing a damping unit according to the invention.
In the apparatus shown in the Figure, a plate cylinder 1, which cooperates with a rubber-covered cylinder 2, is inked by, in the embodiment shown, four inking rollers 3, which are supplied with ink from an inking unit (nowt shown). Viewed in the direction of rotation of the plate cylinder, two applicator rollers 4 for the damping solution are provided ahead of the inking rollers 3. The applicator rollers 4 are provided with damping solution via a distributor 5 and a vibrator 6. This vibrator 6 swings to and fro between the distributor 5 and a metering roller 8 about a shaft 7, and accepts a certain allowance of damping solution from the metering roller 8. Positioned before the metering roller 8 is a fountain roller 9, which dips into damping solution 11 in a damping-solution tank 10.The metering roller 8 and the fountain roller 9 rotate in opposite directions, so that their outer cylindrical surfaces roll on one another.
In the embodiment shown, the metering roller 8 and the fountain roller 9 are driven at different speeds, it being advantageous for the metering roller 8 to be driven at only a slightly higher speed than the fountain roller 9.
The drive itself is not shown in the drawing, but may, for example, comprise an electric motor with step-down gearing. In this connection,it is envisaged that one may exercise control of the speeds of the two rollers, and control of the difference between the speeds of the two rollers.
In order continuously to remove from the damping solution 11 the ink and grease particles which enter the damping solution, and to supply them to the product being printed, the metering roller 8 can be provided with a hydrophilic outer cylindrical surface, and the fountain roller 9 can be provided with an outer cylindrical surface of an oleophilic material.
The oleophilic fountain roller 9 can retain some of the dirt particles and can be easily cleaned. More specifically, the fountain roller 9 can be provided, on its outer cylindrical surface, with a textile covering; this has advantages for certain types of work. A damping unit as described above also makes it possible to meter the damping solution as it passes between the fountain roller 9 and the metering roller 8, with the result that the vibrator 6 can receive what is already a very uniform damping-solution film.
As indicated in the foregoing description with reference to the drawing, the metering roller may (in use) be driven at a higher speed than the fountain roller.
It will be appreciated that the "fountain roller" (in German, the "Tauchwalze") mentioned in the present description and claims is simply a dipping roller, i.e. a roller dipping into the damping solution which is accommodated in the damping-solution tank.
It will be understood that the invention has been described above purely by way of example, and that various modifications of detail can be made within the ambit of the invention.
