Abstract

A freestanding horizontal level has a bar (1), on top of which materials are placed to ensure that they are fixed to a wall accurately. Adjustable legs (2) at each end of the bar determine the level in conjunction with the spirit bubble (4) which is fixed to the bar. Extension bars (3) are used in order that a longer length of material (ie ceramic tiles) may be fixed at any one time. Extension bars are self aligning to fit onto the centre bar, each extension bar having adjustable legs and spirit bubble. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A freestanding horizontal level This invention is a freestanding horizontal level.
When applying materials (ie ceramic tiles) to a wall, it is necessary to obtain a near perfect straight line for the bottom starting position.
An incorrect base line will cause problems when further materials are progressively added to the surface.
The method now generally used is to nail, or screw, a wooden lath (or batten) to the surface using a spirit level to obtain the horizontal line. However, a lath cannot be relied upon to be accurately straight, particularly over a long length.
The invention now submitted is a straight bar with an adjustable leg at each end which would stand on any surface (ie floor or elevated plank of wood) with the bar against the wall. Fixed to the bar is a spirit bubble. The bar would be levelled by adjusting the legs whilst in position. Extensions for both ends would enable the bar to be used over greater distances.
A drawing is submitted which describes the invention in fuli.
Referring to the drawing the freestanding horizontal level comprises a bar 1 with fixed spirit bubble 4 and adjustable legs 2. Extension bars 3 are self aligning by means of a spigot 5 which are attached to bar 1. The extensions are clamped to bar 1 through holes 6.
1. A freestanding horizontal level comprising a bar with an adjustable leg at each end and fixed spirit bubble.
2. A freestanding horizontal level wherein the supporting legs are adjustable for height, and will determine the correct level of the bar in conjunction with the spirit bubble.
3. A freestanding horizontal level as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein extensions are incorporated. Each extension having a fixed spirit bubble and adjustable legs.
4. A freestanding horizontal level as in Claim 3 wherein the extensions are self aligning to the centre bar.
