Description
1 GB2194818A 1
SPECIFICATION
A locking device This invention relates to a locking device of 70 the type including a bolt which is adapted to extend between two members to lock them relative to each other.
According to the invention there is provided a locking device comprising a lock including a body and at least one member engageable thereby in a releasably locking manner, the body and engageable member being relatively movable between en gaged and disengaged positions, a bolt movable by the relative movement of the body and engageable member between a first position when the body engages the en gageable member and a second position in which the engageable member is released by the body.
Preferably, the first position is an extended position and the second position is a retracted position.
Still further according to the invention the lock may be operated by a key or a combination mechanism.
Preferably, at least the body of the lock is located in a suitable housing and preferably both the body and the engageable members are located in the housing.
Preferably, the locking device includes biasing means for biasing the body and engageable member to a disengaged position, and the biasing means is a spring.
Preferably, the body of the lock is movable with respect to the housing, the engageable member is fixed with respect to the housing and the bolt is movable by the body of the lock.
Preferably, the bolt is fixed with respect to the body of the lock.
Preferably, the body is locked in a movable sub housing.
Preferably, the body of the lock is fixed with respect to the housing, the engageable member is movable with respect thereto and the bolt is movable by the engageable member Preferably, the bolt is fixed With respect to the engageable member.
Preferably, the body of the lock is the body of a padlock, there re two engageable members, and the engageable members are provided by the shackle of the padlock.
The invention also provides a closure includ- 120 ing a locking device as defined.
Three embodiments of the invention described by way of example only follow with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a partially sectioned elevation of a first embodiment of a locking device, and Figure 2 is a partially sectioned elevation of a second embodiment of the locking device, and Figure 3 is a partially sectioned elevation of a third embodiment of a locking device.
In the first -embodiment of the invention as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings a locking device 1 includes a padlock 2 which is locatdd in a steel housing 3. An aperture 4 in the steel housing permits access to the keyhole of the padlock 2 by a suitable key 5. At the opposite end of the housing the padlock 2 is restrained against removal by a member 6 which is positioned and welded in place once the padlock 2 has been inserted into the housing.
The padlock 2 comprises a body 7 and a pair of engageable members 8 with are in fact the legs of a normal U- shaped shackle 9 for the padlock. It will be appreciated that the engageable members 8 are engageable in the body 7 of the padlock in normal manner..
The shackle 9 of the padlock and hence the engageable members 8 is welded to a transverse member 10 which in turn is welded to two bolts 11 located on opposite side of the padlock 2 in U-shaped configuration.
These bolts 11 are located in suitable steel housings 12 which form part of the housing 3 for the padlock 2 and which have apertures 13 in their ends remote from the member 10 through which the bolts 11 may move.
It will be appreciated that movement of the engageable members 8 with respect to the body 7 of the padlock causes the bolts 11 to move in accordance therewith.
Furthermore when the engageable members 8 are engaged in the body of the padlock the bolts 11 will project from the apertures 13 into a locking position in which they may engage with bolt apertures in another member (not shown). This position of the bolts is indi- cated in broken lines in Fig. 1.
By turning the key, the shackle 9, and hence the engageable members 8, will be released and the bolts 11 will be withdrawn into their housings 12 and from engagement with bolt holes in another member. Because most padlocks 2 incorporate spring mechanisms for biasing the shackles thereof towards a disengaged position once released the internal locking system it is envisaged that the bolts 11 will automatically be withdrawn on rotation of the key 5.
The construction of the locking device 1 permits for easy mounting to closure members such as doors and windows and it is particularly envisaged that it will be used for wrought iron gates and the like.
A second embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing of Fig. 2.
In the second embodiment a locking device 20 includes rectangular steel housing 21 which is open at one end 22 and closed at the opposite end 23 by means of a closure plate 24.
Slideably located within the housing is a body of a lock. This body is located in a 4 2 GB2194818A 2 secondary housing 24 and is in the form of the body 25 of a padlock, the shackle having been removed.
An aperture 26 in the rear of the secondary housing 24 and accessible from the outside of 70 the housing 21 provides access to the key way for the lock body, 25.
On the opposite side 27 of the secondary housing are apertures 28 which are co-axial with the apertures in the lock body 25 in 75 which the shackle is normally accommodated.
The secondary housing 24 is prevented from removal from the housing 21 by a mem ber 29 projecting from the side 24 of the.
secondary housing and having an elongated aperture 30 movable on a pin 31 extending through the housing 21.
-A pair of bolts 32 are mounted to the sec ondary housing and project through apertures 33 in the- end member 24 of the housing.
Located on these bolts 32 are compression type coil springs 34 which serve to bias the bolts towards a retracted position Engageable members are located within the housing to project towards apertures 28 in the side 27. These engageable members 35 respond to what would have been the limbs of a -shackle for the lock body 25.
From Fig. 2 of the drawings it will be ap preciated that by moving the body 23 and hence the lock body 25 in the housing 21 towards the engageable members 35 these may engaged by the lock-body 25 by passing through the apertures 28. The bolts will then be in an extended position and may be re tracted by disengaging the body 25 from the engageable members 35 on rotation of the key 36. When this is done the springs 34 will immediately act to return the secondary hous ing 23 to the position corresponding to the disengaged or retracted position of the bolts 32.
A third embodiment of the inven tion is shown in Fig. 3 which depicts a locking de- vice 40 comprising a rectangular steel housing 110 41 having an open qnd 42.
A lock body 43 is slideable in the open end 42 of the housing and is prevented from re moval therefrom by putwardly extending lips 44 on the body which engage with inwardly projecting lips 45 of the housing. It will be appreciated that the lips 44, of the lock body 43 could be made by simply machining away a small amount from two opposite sides 46 of the body.
At the opposite end 47 of the housing 41 two engageable members 48 are mounted to project internally towards the apertures 49 in the lock body which would normally accom- modate a shackle therefor.
Mounted to the lock body 43 between the two apertures 49 is a bolt 50 which projects through an aperture 51 in the housing between the two engageable members 48. A coil spring 52 on the bolt 51 serves to bias the bolt 51 and hence lock body 43 to retracted position.
It will readily be appreciated that the bolt may be moved towards an extended or locked position by sliding the body 43 into the hou ing 41 until it engages the engageable members 48 in the apertures 49. Release of the engageable members 48 is effected by rotation of the key 53 in known manner.
From the description of the third embodiment it will be seen that the bolt need not be attached to the body and furthermore that the body need not be prevented from removal from the housing when in the disengaged po- sition.
The invention thus provides a simple locking device which may be used on closures of various types but particularly wrought iron doors and the like.
Other embodiments are envisaged within the scope of the invention and include other designs and configurations thereof.
